  1. I'm interested in USC's MA in Communication Management and Miami's MA in Communication Studies. I want to focus on political communication, and USC offers a Law & Policy concentration while Miami is more research-method oriented(from what I've seen on their websites.) To those who have applied or been admitted, how was the application process?
  2. Hello everyone! I am looking into the programs at USC and U of Miami for communication studies, and wanted to know if anyone had experience with either program? How would you rate the rigor of the program, and how was your application process? Have there been successful applicants with less than stellar GREs or GPA? Any insight or advice is much appreciated.
  3. Sorry for the freakout, guys. I needed to vent my frustration with the exam. I got anxious not being able to memorize concepts as good as I need to, and so I considered the grand scheme of things wherein my ability to do well in grad school couldn't possibly correlate to the geometry and probability concepts of the GRE quant section. I am always encouraged by other applicants who do well on the exam and who go on to succeed at being admitted to their program of choice.
  4. I have been practicing for the GRE since November, with a target test date in February, but the concepts aren't sinking in, and putting life on hold to master it is not worth doing. I'm not convinced at all of its correlation to success in graduate school, and find it ridiculous that both test materials and the exam itself are sold at such astronomical prices. I spoke with an adviser at Columbia who flat-out dismissed the exam's relevance in their evaluation of a student's abilities in their MA program. The trickily worded math and tangential platitudes of the analytical writing section are torturous, and I wonder if anyone on this forum has been successful in dodging this elaborate, money-making scam that ETS has come up with to line their pockets? It would be beneficial if ETS admitted that the GRE's purpose is to assist certain universities in denying higher education to segments of society in lieu of the economy being in the dumps and people wanting to go back to school to make themselves more marketable.
  5. Has anyone applied to this program or considered applying to it? I was reading up on it and have heard a lot of good things. The breadth of coursework is impressive(from race and gender studies to political science and economics), and the MA can be completed in three semesters. I especially loved the fact that the GRE was not required for admittance. Having a BA in Political Science and a desire to help others, I would love to take a flyer on it in the spring. Advice from those who have considered applying, have already applied, or who have been accepted in the past is greatly appreciated.
  6. Standard deviation, probability, linear geometry, data analysis, permutations, quadratic equations, square root, dividing fractions, etc. Memorizing it all is a pain. Haven't got around to the quant section on Powerprep yet.
  7. I'm in the same boat as you as far as sucking at math and having a GRE around the corner. I've found Magoosh's free math ebook and mygretutor.com's breakdown of the math section to render all the formulas in an accessible fashion. Also, quizlet has flashcards from people who have taken the test that have all the formulas posted. Quizlet allows you to quiz yourself as many times as you need so that you can grasp the concepts.
  8. Hello everyone! I have two months to prepare for the GRE, and am nervous because my math skills have never been strong, and I am at a loss for how to adequately prepare for the quant section. Could anyone who has recently taken the exam or who is preparing offer insight into the difficulty of the quant section and what I should emphasize while studying? Prep material suggestions would also be much appreciated. Thanks.
