  1. Margaretta Lovell and Darcy Grimaldo-Grigsby at UC Berkeley. May the odds be ever in your favour.
  2. Just a heads up, Williams College is hiring a South Asian art historian with a specialization in either premodern/early modern or contemporary art. Thought this might be of help to aspiring M.A. applicants in coming cycles.
  3. Thanks, betsy303! It's on my list now, I didn't know Thomas Dale was at Wisconsin. On a different note, isn't Wisconsin facing a funding crises?
  4. Hi all! Just thought I'd start this thread. Where all are you applying? How's the GRE coming along? SoP...? Writing samples? Let's commiserate. I'll start. B.A. (top-ranking public school on the East coast) and M.A. (well-ranked, medium sized public school on the West coast) in art history. GRE registered for end-July. Currently working on my SoPs. Writing sample in my area, but needs much work/editing to be a self contained 20-page essay, as is customary for most programs. Schools shortlisted: University of California, Berkeley, University of Minnesota, University of Chicago, New York University's Institute of Fine Arts, Columbia University, City University of New York's The Graduate Centre, Harvard University, and Johns Hopkins University. Area: Early Modern Europe Here's to another season of applications. May the odds be ever in your favour!
  5. Williams and Tufts seem to be popular programs both in terms of funding and placements (doctoral and/or curatorial). Ergo, there will be much gained from those programs. IMO Delaware, Boston, UMass-Amherst, and Wisconsin-Madison are fairly well-respected programs, but for your area--I think--Boston would be a good choice, as they have both Chinese and Japanese specialists along with an Islamicist. NYU and Columbia are good programs, if you want to shell out the money to attend them. There's also the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, which offers a terminal M.A. program, though, I'm not sure they have a faculty member specializing in East Asia. Might I add the University of British Columbia as a possible destination. The school offers a terminal M.A. and there happen to be numerous scholars studying Asia not only in the Department of Art History, but also in Asian Studies, History, and Anthropology. Ignacio Adriasola, the Japanese specialist, is--incidentally--a Duke alumnus as well. Millie Creighton in Anthropology might also be a potential committee member. Although, the department at UBC is in flux, as the Chinese art historian was denied tenure and other senior faculty approach retirement. As for funding, M.A. students are generally awarded some form of funding in Canada either as entering fellowships or teaching assistantships. I hope this helps.
  6. Since we are on the subject of Top 10 doctoral programs in art history, I was wondering if anyone on the board could shed some light on Minnesota's program. As far as I'm aware the program is very well-regarded when it comes to South Asian art and architecture, but what about other areas? The team of South Asian professors, Frederick and Catherine Asher have now retired, thus, I am wondering if there have there been any replacements for their positions? What is the general perception of Minnesota's program amongst other art history departments nation-wide? How would one classify this program in a list, if one must (solely to make matters of decision easier)? Minnesota's placement rate for South Asianists is absolutely stellar with graduates in tenure/tenure-track positions at Johns Hopkins, Berkeley, The College of New Jersey, Vanderbilt University, and the University of Toronto/Royal Ontario Museum, but is that likely to continue with the Ashers' retirement? Please any help/advise would be greatly appreciated!
  7. Congratulations alpheratz! There's some good news around.
  8. Hi isadoraduncan, I did my undergrad at UofT and would highly recommend the department if you're pursuing either Medieval/Byzantine (Adam Cohen, Linda Safran) or Modern/Contemporary (Mark Cheetham, Elizabeth something). UofT's graduate faculty come from all three campuses and not just St. George. Although as an undergrad at St. George campus I did take a few art history credits at UTM, which has an excellent art history faculty as well (Jill Caskey, John Ricco, Alison Syme). The resources in Toronto and not just in terms of the library cannot be matched at either McGill and definitely not at UBC. UBC has a good faculty and a sizable fellowship adds to the resume. I am now in Vancouver so I can tell you the department has some amazing people and then some not so amazing. If money is an important factor then you have your answer. Finally, with McGill you cannot go wrong. Amazing people, amazing department, open to new ideas and everything in-between. Amelia Jones, Will Straw, and so on. Although, I have only heard of McGill second hand and not from my own experience, so take what I say with that in mind. As for the cities, I am partial to Toronto but for many other reasons, you shouldn't have any trouble with either Vancouver (other than the horrid rains!) or Montreal (except for the snow!). I hope this helps!
  9. Thank you @kromanic. That's somewhat of a relief! Yet, I am with @alphertz, the selection committee is pretty good at getting back to people and didn't we have another poster who was contacted for an interview already (?). Why would they use "probably", either it's mid to late April or it's not, as it is there's enough confusion. The probably sends my red flags up. Did you quote the email verbatim? Again, thank you for sharing.
  10. So just to add to that list, I haven't heard back either. ::enter sinking feeling::
  11. Apologies for thread necromancy but has anyone heard from the Metropolitan Museum for their paid internship program for Summer 2013?
