UCSB gives a 1000 stipend with a TAship, plus free tuition and healthcare. Other grants for travel, interdisciplinary research, etc. are available.

Thanks cpw0021! Congrats on your interview for Chicago:) How exciting! Madison's deadline was 1/5, with TAship interviews still to come. Funding will play a huge part in who my top choice ends up being. I just updated my signature with my list of schools. Fingers crossed for more good news for us all!

Solid advice. Having those first years after grad school to focus on making work, and not worrying about getting a full-time job to pay off debt, sounds like the way to go. I don't have any debt from undergrad (I went to a state school with a full ride), so perhaps I don't have a healthy fear of it! The idea of 30k doubling is terrifying. The burden of debt would definitely limit one's ability to accept opportunities!

thepictureisstill - Thank you for sharing Teresita Fernández's talk! Wow, she nails it. That was exactly what I needed to hear, too. On topic, I'm torn about how much debt is worth accumulating for a top tier school. I think it would be easier to make better art without loans, but at the same time, I think part of the reason for getting an MFA is for the community and, well, connections. I personally would never take out $100k in loans, but I would take out $20-30 for the right program. At least that's what I'm thinking now. The other main reason I see for doing it is for the concentrated time in the studio, but you don't really need grad school for that.

I believe Indiana and the New York Studio School are great for figurative painting. There is a lot of information on this forum, so I suggest reading a few years back. If you're finishing up undergrad, go ahead and apply if you feel ready, but consider taking a few years to travel, show, and paint! It's scary to think about when you're just finishing college, but it's often a good idea to let your work and life develop a bit before jumping into a program. Figure out in which part of the art world you want to be. Best of luck!

I do not have experience on the viewing side of things, but did apply to Columbia. I just saved each image as close to 5mb as possible at 72 dpi. The pixel sizes vary, but mine all ended up in the 1000-1600/side range. I am sure they'll view each image full size, and won't stretch them. I hope that helps, and good luck!
