  1. I'm currently a UofL Online MSSW Student. I started Fall 2014. I'm on the mixed 3-year program, so I officially hit the "full-time" portion of it. I got into a few other schools as well, but chose UofL for various reasons. It was a great choice.. Great school, great fellow students.
  2. Of the 9 schools I applied to (all online programs), none of them required the GRE. I took it, but did poorly, so was hoping that it didn't negatively affect my chances. It didn't because I never had to submit them. You should be fine. Good luck!
  3. This guy is off his rocker. If he really thinks that "education is a business," why write a letter that will tarnish his own name at this university? And as other people have said... University admissions people talk. This is terrible "business" practice... His name will get around. The sense of entitlement in the emails is crazy to me. Grad school is a privilege, not a right.
  4. Of the 8 schools I have applied to and heard back from (still waiting on 1), I got accepted to 4 of them with an overall GPA of 2.8... However, my "bad" grade years were my lower division courses over 10 years ago. I just finished my undergrad with a 3.2 GPA in my major, so I think that helped (some schools only focus on your last 60 units). I didn't have a school that requested my GRE scores, and thank god for that (it wasn't very good). But, I have been working as a clinical counselor (addictions) for 2 years, so I'm thinking that helped. I, too, was worried about my GPA, but like many other people said, for Social Work they look at the overall person. I applied to a bunch of schools because I was worried I wouldn't get in to any of them. But lucky for me, I was able to actually chose which one I wanted to attend. Then again, I am doing my MSW online, so that may be a little bit different. Good luck!
  5. I applied in January for the UNE Fall '14 Online program... I finished my undergrad in May, so they waited on finalizing my app until that was turned in the beginning of June, and I heard back two weeks ago. I was accepted, but already accepted my admission to Louisville's online program (cheaper and higher ranked). Good luck!
  6. I just graduated with my BA from a local university's (Washington State University) online program. Since the university is well known, it has not hindered me from obtaining work (since I've been attending), nor do I see it being a problem in the future. The stigma and stereotypes of online education are simply not true. Yes, it's not face-to-face, but in my experience (and my personal opinion), online education is more difficult because they require more "posts" (aka homework) to off-set you not physically being present for class. And after you post, you are typically required to "respond" to 2-3 of your classmates' posts, to engage in classmate cross-conversation (and yes, there is a word-count requirement on everything). They make certain requirements of you to make sure you are not losing out on that much of the human interaction portion of online learning. Nothing about the program was different form the on-campus program other than not being present in class. I was required to do a 200-hour internship and it was with a local agency (I performed mine with the CPS). I still got the internship experience without having to drive to the university's community to do it (6 hours away). As far as clinical hours and supervision, it is all still required. I have been accepted into University of Louisville's Online Program (MSSW) for the Fall. It's CSWE accredited... The good programs will have rules in place about how often you check in with your supervisor. The only downside might be that you have to local the internship site yourself, but really how hard it that? I hear a lot of this "Is online education real?" or "It's not the same" and it makes me wonder what people think we actually do. I also set personal parameters for myself... I only applied to programs with actual "physical" campuses. I still have a weird feeling about online universities like University of Phoenix (but that's just my opinion). There are also some online MSW programs (like University of North Dakota) that are 100% synchronous, where you "attend" class 2-3 days a week by logging on to the website and Skyping your classmates for 2-hours. You basically are "in" class, without physically being there. This might put those people's minds at ease... But for me, it didn't allow the flexibility that I needed. Ultimately you decided, but I wouldn't let a few people's personal opinions sway you from doing it, if it's the only option. As a married 30-year-old and full-time addiction counselor with hopes of starting a family soon, online is my only option if I want to pursue grad school. Sometimes, you just have to "punt" and see what happens... But there are options! Good luck!
  7. I used Interfolio for my 10 applications. Asking my writers to submit to my 10 schools would have been too much. I've been extremely satisfied with the service and would completely recommend them. One thing to keep in mind, like the previous poster stated, is that some universities, who DO accept the Interfolio letters, also need a separate form filled out. That's a situation that is currently happening with me. Three of my schools are asking for my recommenders to fill out an evaluation form and send it back to them. One reason I used Interfolio was because the three people I chose, while great recommenders, are extremely busy and rarely do things on time. It's frustrating that it took over a month after their initial deadline to submit the letter to Interfolio, let alone the 3 weeks I've been waiting for them to also submit the evaluation to the various schools. I knew that this would be a possibility, and while it's frustrating, the service has been amazing for the 7 schools that have my completed application. It was nice having the control over when and where the letters went. Certain shipping situations even have tracking, which is nice.
  8. As an addiction counselor myself, I 100% agree with everything that asd2t stated... Spot on. Working in a field where people rely on what you say is terrifying at first, but it does get better. Just like everything, it takes time... Time to find your flow and your counseling style. Time to really feel comfortable with your clients. But it will happen. Don't give up!
  9. While I don't have any experience there, I did apply to UND's Online program. The deadline is in June and they don't have rolling admissions, so I'm going to go crazy waiting it out until July. They are my number one choice (based on fit, program length, and funding). The only reservation I have is the synchronous component of the program. You have to "log on" to the course 2-3 times a week at specific times and webcam the course.
  10. I recently heard a great rule of thumb... Only take out as much in student loans, as you make in a year. Not sure how accurate that is, or if it applies to you, but thought I'd pass it along.
  11. My search parameters were pretty specific: online only, part-time only, allows WA students. That narrowed it to the 11 I applied to. UW has an amazing program, but it's not online, nor could I fit in to my schedule time to go on campus. Only one CA school fit the bill - Humboldt State. But it's a Spring '15 start, so I haven't officially applied yet (can't until August). My husband and I plan to start a family here pretty soon, so that's why I chose online and part-time. I'll stay home with our little one a complete my Masters. Then when I go back to work, I'll be done. But thanks for the heads up! For the record, the rain here isn't as bad as people think. I'm from CA originally and have been in WA for 5 years, and it's totally doable! The media overplays it... Kind of like seeing LA on TV (I lived down there for 6 years and LA isn't at all what it's like in TV either)...
  12. Thank for the responses! As far as gaining experience, I've been doing what I can, but I know it just takes time to accumulate the kind of experience that they look for... I've been working as an alcohol/drug addiction counselor for the past year. I also just started interning with the DSHS in their Children's Administration department (CPS, Child Welfare, Adoption, etc.). Working with CPS has been such a great experience so far. I ended applying to all of the online programs that I qualified for. I live in Washington, so not all online programs were available for me (some are regional only)... I applied to 11 total schools. If you're serious about grad school, why not give it your all, you know? Writing the various Personal Statements took some time (a lot of time...) but worth it in the end. I know the cards are stacked against me, but I never want to go through life wondering "What if?"... As in, what if I had only applied to this school... So I threw in everything I had... Will it pay off? Who knows... But definitely not for lack of effort at this point. I went to community college straight out of high school over 10 years ago and messed up my GPA pretty bad... I've done really well in my upper division/major courses over the past two years, but my overall GPA has still suffered because of my stupidity from all those years ago. I have so far received one rejection letter, due to my low GPA (which is weird because the school stated that they focus more on your "last 60 units" which I've done really well). No other letters have come through yet, so we shall see... If I don't get in this go around, I'll keep working and apply for Fall 2015.... Maybe another year under my belt will help. Good luck to the rest of you!!!
  13. I applied to a bunch of the online MSW programs over the holiday break. I wanted to make sure everything was in and done before I started back to school for my final semester this week. Between my counseling job and my Bachelors internship, I'm super busy. Best decision ever was to apply to all of the programs (regardless of their summer deadline) before jumping in to Spring Semester. Good luck!
  14. I was just looking at the schools that I'm applying to for Fall 2014 (all are online MSW programs)... A few of them have Summer 2014 admissions. Can someone please tell me if there are any benefits in applying to the Summer Semester are, as opposed to the Fall? I'll be graduating on May 10 with my BA so I'm even wondering if Summer admissions is possible (seems like a quick turnaround to get them my final transcripts). Thanks!
  15. Oh ok. I'll check their instructions. Thank you!
