Fairfax city recently implemented public electric scooters you can rent on an app. Not much people using it these days due to stay-at-home orders but I used to see some Mason students renting them and using them to go from downtown Fairfax to campus. Mason shuttle is a good way to get around. It's free and stops at downtown and also takes you to the other GMU campuses. Local cue bus is also free with Mason ID and that takes you even farther. You can use it to go to the mall, Trader Joe's and Walmart. Both Mason shuttle and cue bus can take you to the Vienna metro station. If you prefer to walk, there's a Giant and a 2-dollar movie theater across the street.
  3. VIDEOS!!!!!! Honestly, I thought it would be the SOP or getting LORs, but when one of the schools I am applying for asked for a video statement of why you want to be part of the program, it was the most difficult part for me. I only have 3 minutes to answer 5 questions which is too short of a time frame. I had to record it live so I am unable to edit or cut the video. God knows how many times I had to do it over and over again while trying to maintain eye contact with my webcam. This probably sounds silly because youtoubers can spend hours vlogging and just talking to the camera but it was just an annoying part of the application for me. I had always been a much better writer than speaker.
  4. So should I leave that section blank? Should I reveal all the schools I am applying for or just some? To those who have applied already, did you fill it in? yes, I guess I am worrying too much
  5. Thank you, I have been thinking along the same lines as well. I'm still debating on whether I should just leave it blank... to those who had finished their applications, did you fill it in?
  6. so in the HGSE online application they ask you to list the other schools/programs you are applying to.... should I fill this in or leave it blank? would it hurt my chances? what impression does it make if I list other schools I am interested in, would they feel like I dont want HGSE enough?
  7. So I do not know if this has been discussed already, but in the online application for certain schools, they want me to list the other programs or schools that I am also applying to. I am unsure if I should just leave it blank or go ahead with it. Would this hurt or increase my chances if I write down my other choices? Why do I feel like it's a trick question...
  8. Is anyone applying for HGSE'S Teacher Education Program and encountered the additional Subject Matter Requirement? It pretty much makes you list down all the college courses you have taken for the subject you intend to teach. For History, the requirements are: US History, World History, Geo, Econ, Philosophy and Research. The website says: "our Admissions Committee places great value on candidates' level of preparation in the subject that they intend to teach. Although we do not require candidates to hold an undergraduate degree in their chosen teaching field, we do review candidates' applications to determine if certain state-required topics within the field have been addressed through prior coursework, research or work experience...Applicants to TEP are expected to provide a list of courses which they have taken that address each of these subject-matter requirements for their discipline." I am pretty worried because I haven't taken any of those classes in college because my major is Asian History. I haven't had US History, World History, Geography or Econ since High School. It took a few Philosophy classes for GE. I guess I can list down my Chinese History classes under World History. Does this mean my chances are slim since I pretty much did not take any classes under the other categories. I honestly feel awkward just leaving them blank even though the website says it "is not necessary" to have taken a course under each category :/ Anyone having a similar issue where they majored in something a little different than your chosen teaching field? Should I choose a different program instead, I think only TEP requires this.
  9. So my second biggest concern for my apps (aside from my GRE scores) is my lack of experience working in a classroom. I've been a longtime lurker in this forums and I've noticed that some people who got accepted to schools like HGSE, Vandy or Teacher's college have been working as teachers or school administrators for years. I just recently graduated from college and aside from a brief fieldwork at an elementary school where I shadowed a teacher for a few months and a 3-year stint as a tutor for a high school afterschool program, I do not really have much professional work experience in the classroom. Should this concern me? How much do you think experience matter in your application?? on a side note: my GRE scores are also a source of worry for me. If we are talking about HGSE, Teacher's College and Stanford, I'm not sure if my scores areenough to help me stand out. I got 156 for both quant and verbal, and 5.5 for the writing portion. My GPA is 3.9 from a good UC and my Letters of Rec are strong. But as mentioned, my GRE is not that great and I'm inexperienced compared to other applicants so I'm debating whether to push going to grad school for another year to gain more experience.
  10. Hi Thumbelina: May I ask what your GRE scores and GPA were? What do you think was the strongest part of your app that lead to your acceptance? My total GRE score for both quant and verbal is 312, which is not the most stellar. I graduated with a 3.9 from a top public uni so I am not sure what my chances are.
  11. I'm considering applying for an MA in Teacher's Ed at HGSE but my GRE scores are not up to par... I scored 156 on both quant and verbal, and a 5.5 in the writing. I graduated with a 3.9 from a good public uni, but I do not have much work experience in an educational environment since I just recently graduated. Should I bother?
