  1. Many many thanks to everyone who answered my question! I will definitely follow your suggestions and find more about conversation analysis!
  2. Hi everyone, I am interested in learning the research method of conversation analysis. I am currently reading "the Handbook of Conversation Analysis" on my own. I hope to get trainings from people who actually apply this methodology in their own work. Does any one know where I can get such trainings in the US? Thank you very much!!!
  3. Hi everyone, I am a second year PhD student in sociology. I am wondering how much weight we should give to our own research project and the grad level coursework. I have heard different views. Some told me that GPA in grad school does not matter, what's important is that we publish. I have seen people in other Social Science departments publish a paper just after the 1st year in grad school and have multiple work in progress. However, in my program, I feel the professors are really expecting us to perform well in their classes. As a sociology grad student, we are required to actively participate in classroom discussions in sociological theories. (most of the courses introduce us to the theoretical staff but not cutting edge research). Moreover, my peers are also very competitive in class and seem to spend a lot of time on studying. Currently, I spent most of my time on coursework and TA work (and I have got sick for the stress of doing well in courses). I am really worried about the fact that I am not progressing on any research. Am I doing the right thing - to prioritize coursework rather than research? Thank you so much!
  4. Thank you very much Caffeinated! I am already attending a PhD program, and now I am in my second semester. I agree that spending extra money on training may not be necessary. I wish I could find an internship, but I do not feel I can get one as I am so busy as a graduate student and a TA...
  5. Hello everyone! I am a first year Sociology PhD student. For the coming summer, I have several plans but I am not sure which one to implement, and I hope to hear some advice from you. Thank you all in advance! 1, Go to summer school. Here is a nice discussion on sociology summer schools: I am hesitating if I should go to these schools because: 1, they are expensive. 2, they last relatively short. I am not sure if such short trainings are very helpful. 3, I can study many of the subjects offered in the summer school on my own. 2, Do summer internship. If a PhD student wants to gain some practical experience, I believe the first summer is the optimal time - no worries about qualifying exam or dissertations yet. However, I do not find many suitable internship opportunities - has anyone done summer internship during PhD study? Any recommendation of institutions that may recruit Sociology PhDs? 3, Do summer reading. Our department has posted the reading lists for different subfields. 4, Do some data collection for my own research. I believe there are many other options. Please share your thoughts with everyone and give me some advice ~ Thank you a lot!!
