  1. Just got my rejection from Duke, told me to check the website.
  2. Well yes, obviously I guess i should have put that in quotation marks to make it clear..
  3. I got offered 18,000 at UCI and I'm a bit worried about the cost of living as well, although I assume it's cheaper than Berkeley. I suppose 18,000 is the standard for UC anthro?
  4. I'm considering an offer from UCI and I was wondering about the cost of living. My offer is 18,000 a year, is that actually enough to live on?
  5. It's pretty egregious that this is still the case, but there you have it. It's a holdover from anthropology's colonial roots, the idea that the discipline was about studying "the other," "the primitive," located in distant lands with funny names. The only exception to the distant lands rule was the study of native americans, and that was because they still fit into the savage slot. Civilized lands have societies, not cultures, hence the disciplinary division between sociology and anthropology.
  6. Just got my notification of acceptance today. Hope the good news keeps rolling for everyone.
  7. In my current program that's unfortunately not really an option.
  8. I am currently enrolled as a PhD student at a well-ranked interdisciplinary program. I am in my second year, and have 1 more year before I take my comps and become ABD. The package I was offered was 24k over 4 years (so I have 2 more years of funding left) and no summer funding. However, I've been unhappy in the program for a variety of reasons. This year, I applied and got accepted into a another great program in the discipline I got my MA degree in. I had already spoken to my current DGS (who I am close to) about my acceptance before I got my official package just to give her a head's up that I am considering moving. She was very understanding, particularly since students have been struggling with making ends meet over summers and once their funding runs out. At the time, all I knew was that I was going to be offered funding for 6 years + 3 summers. She said that if it would make a difference to my decision then she would try to secure summer funding for me, and perhaps even a fifth year (though nothing is guaranteed of course). To do this she'd have to take my offer letter and lobby the graduate school. The POI at the new university said repeatedly that we should send him any offer letters from other schools so that they can match it. I wasn't accepted anywhere else, but yesterday I sent my POI the offer letter for the program I am currently enrolled in. Today I received my official offer letter from them - 18K over 6 years and guaranteed summer funding for three years, although the summer funding was not included in the offer letter. So I am offered less money at school 2 but for a longer period of time, although that means I have to start over (financial security is extremely important to me since I am an international student). Here's my dilemma: I know there is some room for negotiation with school 2, since they were very clear about their desire and ability to match competing offers. It doesn't seem however that they considered my current package a "competing offer," perhaps because I only have two more years of funding left (that would leave 2 years unfunded for which I will have to apply to external grants). I have not decided exactly where to go yet, but I do want to try to negotiate a better situation for myself at either school. I need a better offer from school 2 for me to be able to accept, but also to give me leverage with my current school for possible summer funding and a fifth year. Should I email school 2 and be honest about the inadequacy of their package, considering what a steep cut it is from my current one in hopes that they will adjust my offer?
  9. I think the purpose of recruitment open houses is to try to sell the program to you and for you to see what it's like before you decide. I don't think they're under the impression that if you attend you have automatically accepted.
  10. A friend of mine also applying to Duke called the department and it seems we should expect decisions late February/early March. I'm now really confused about those two acceptances.
  11. There's 2 cultural anth acceptances on the results page from Jan 27, so I'm assuming that's it.
  12. Hi! I'm in my second year of an interdisciplinary program and decided to switch over to anthropology. I got accepted into a great school, and I'm deciding whether I should do it or not. The school I am considering has a lot more money, while my program is suffering financially. On the other hand, if I do move I will essentially be starting all over - 2 years of coursework gone (I might be able to transfer a couple of courses, but that's not really going to make much of a dent time wise.) If I stay I'll have just another year of courses and then take my comps. So Pros for moving: more money, better intellectual fit Pros for staying: I'll finish much earlier (but will struggle with money) From what I understand you'll be in a similar position - 2 years of coursework done before you move. One thing to ask about from the get go is how many credits you'll be able to transfer to see how much you can salvage through the transition. Good luck!
  13. mmhmm. Especially now that someone posted that they received an interview email from Stanford and my hopes are being dashed by the second.
  14. Does anyone know if all the Duke cultural anthro admits have been notified?
