  1. His response is vague. I would push for a more direct answer.
  2. I worked very hard on a set of experiments that took a very long time. I wrote a manuscript detailing the results of the experiments and sent it to my advisor exactly 1 month ago. I didn't get a reply, so I sent a follow-up email a couple of weeks later. I still haven't received a reply, and I sent an additional follow-up email today. I am his only grad student, and he does not have any postdocs. He teaches one course. I feel like he should have time to read my manuscript (which is a brief communications paper, so it isn't even that long), and I am frustrated. How long is too long for an advisor not to read or reply to my request to read my manuscript? By the way, his name is on it so he has good incentive.

  4. By the way, I am a PhD student and I am funded through a separate fellowship.
  5. I work in a lab where we run experiments with animals. My advisor is going to have one of his research assistants run an experiment, but before that happens, he needs to write the computer code that will control the experimental procedure. Here is the problem: I am the only one in the lab who knows the coding language, and he has asked me to write the code. I said yes but told him that I am extremely busy--I run experiments of my own, take classes, and teach classes. Would it be weird if I asked to be an author on the final paper? Otherwise, this extra work does not benefit me whatsoever, and I would feel like I'm being taken advantage of.
  6. This will be my second and final time applying for the GRFP. I would really like to use a lot of what I wrote last year for my personal statement. Is it frowned upon if I re-use some of the material from my previous statement?
  7. Thank you all for the responses. The old faculty member ended up giving in and started moving his stuff out of the space. But even though it all worked out, I still wish I hadn't sent that email. The anxiety was too much to bear.
  8. I am a PhD student. My department just recruited a great researcher to be on the faculty, but he is already thinking of leaving. I am very disappointed, because I was planning on doing a lot of my PhD work with him, and I think he is a great addition to the faculty. The story is that his lab space was supposed to be cleared out and renovated by the beginning of September. However, the guy who previously occupied that space is very stubborn with moving his stuff out and thus halting renovations. And it isn't if there is heavy equipment to move out--he just has a lot of books to remove. At the time I write this post, it is already September 19. I just spoke to the new professor today, and he said that he may need to move to another university since his funding source is demanding that he start his research right away. All because some guy refuses to move his damn books! So, I sent an email to the professor who is not moving his stuff, and politely offered to help move his stuff if he ever needs it. While this guy doesn't know that the new professor is thinking of moving to another university, I did make it a point to mention in the email that it would be a shame to lose him. I know that I am a mere grad student, but this guy's actions are not just affecting the start of a career for a new faculty member, but also my future plans. In other words, his actions (or lack thereof) are beginning to affect a student. Was it right for me to send the email to him, or was it a mistake?
  9. My advisor has recently discovered some alternative, uncommon way of doing ANOVA (i.e. Rodger's method http://en.wikiversity.org/wiki/Rodger's_Method).He now wants to use this method for all future analyses. I'm still trying to wrap my head around the method, and so far it makes sense. Still, the method is almost unheard of, and I have a feeling that it is not in my best interests to be associated with a researcher who is using such an unconventional way of doing ANOVA. He is going to want to apply this method to my own future experiments as well. Is this good or bad for my future career?
  10. I am a first-year psychology PhD student studying learning in rats. I have been working on variants of the same experiment since coming to work in my advisor's lab in August 2014. It is now March 2015. I started this project as a way of familiarizing myself with how the lab functions, and I have certainly learned a lot in that domain. But I keep getting meaningless results, and each time the results come out ambiguous, my advisor tells me to make an adjustment in the procedure. The research no longer interests me, and the only thing motivating me is the prospect of a publication. Yet, even that seems far off. I want to move on to work on more interesting questions, but how much longer should I stick with this project? And how should I go about broaching the subject with my advisor? This project seems like it will never end. Each time I get a weird result, my advisor always finds a way of coming up with alternative explanations. I feel like it will never end.
  11. While I was an undergraduate, I took a statistics class. However, the professor was absent half the time due to illness, and she did not teach us anything beyond t-tests. I am now a first-year PhD student, and I am currently taking an intermediate stats class that is supposed to cover everything up to multiple regression. But my professor is not qualified to teach, and the book does not cover any of the theory or math behind the statistical tests. I desperately want to achieve a deep understanding of statistics. What is a good book that will dive into the theoretical aspects of stats?
  12. Try this: Add the title in the entry form and upload the proposal without the title at the top. Then, click save and continue. Once it has been uploaded, there is an option to preview the PDF. I don't think the title will show up at the top, but you can try anyway.
  13. So, I submitted my application today . However, I had to submit it before my advisor could give my research statement a final read-through. When I showed him the final draft that I submitted, he pointed out that I should have added more details in some areas. For example, I plan to administer dopamine agonists and antagonists to rats during an experiment, but I did not specify the name of the drugs or the dosage. I figured that those details were not integral to the essay, which is limited to 2 pages anyway. My advisor is extremely detail-oriented, and he is famous for grilling people about the nitty-gritty details of their experiments. So should I be worried, or just interpret these criticisms as side-effects of my advisor's personality?
  14. Hello, I am a new PhD student in an animal behavior program (psychology). I was wondering how I am expected to financially manage traveling to conferences and subscribing to academic journals. For example, I want to attend SfN in DC, but I am in NYC. How am I , a grad student who is making just enough to live, expected to pay for airfare, hotel, etc.? Also, I would like to subscribe to relevant journals, but again, it's a money issue. How do PhD students normally manage such things? Thanks!
  15. Great, so when is the application available?
