Be very careful about this. Ask your school. My school makes three payments (Sept, Jan, May). I chose to start in Sept and because I wasn't registered for the following summer (planned to graduate in May) I nearly lost the third payment. I had to extend my registration and defer my graduation. I was lucky - my school was really nice about this and very accommodating and understanding - they had been extremely unclear about it when I received the award initially. There is some kind of "rollover" into a phd rule but I know that because my registration would have been suspended (because I would have graduated and had a "gap" summer) I would not have been eligible for it.

has anyone had any luck negotiating with U of T to still have tuition covered, rather than having it come out of SSHRC? I know that in some departments you keep your award, they pay your tuition still, and sometimes you even get a bonus/prize for winning. In my department, they claw back the tuition. Wondering if anyone has any experience asking to keep the whole thing I'm a bit shy about asking about money, so I'd appreciate any advice! Thanks!

Yes, you can choose to start in September. BUT if it is the last year of your program you will end up getting two payments: September and January. You sacrifice the third payment - they don't divide it in two, you just get 2/3rds of the award. If you look back, you'll see this happened to me. So be careful!
  4. Has anyone heard back about Vanier-through-SSHRC?

Yes, I think that is what I will have to do. But my fury at the person at my grad school who told me "oh no, it doesn't make a difference" knows no bounds! I'm still concerned this might somehow effect my eligibility if I got doctoral SSHRC. (Anyone know?) To be honest, it's just the stress of this on top of the defense... What a mess! If only I had known about this board last May! Could have asked some people who were a bit more informed!

I think that because you still have another year of your program afterwards you are OK. As it was explained to me, my problem is that I don't have another year of the SAME degree. I had thought this would be OK because we usually graduate in November, but I have since found out we graduate from this program in June. I hadn't been sure whether or not I would be done this spring, so I had my funding start in September in case I wasn't. But to me (and I am not sure) you seem OK.

Actually - it is a two year degree that I took two years to complete. SSHRC funded one year of that, not eight months. So I was counting on one year of funding. Nowhere does my graduate school make it clear that the three payments have to start in May or else you give up a third of the scholarship. I'm waiting to find out if I can put off the convocation and still defend as planned. It would really suck to put off my defense itself for four months. I'm wondering if anyone else has had this problem and has had their third payment backdated.

    SSHRC 2010

I'm a long-time lurker here, as I've been a bit too shy to post But I need some advice! I received a one-year Master's SSHRC for this last year of my degree. I elected to start my payments in September 2009, with my grad secretary assuring my that I would still receive three payments (Sept 2009, Jan 2010, May 2010). I found out now that as I plan to graduate this June I have forfeited my third payment. This is NOT clear on SSHRC's website (I checked there before I checked the little box on the form!) and I'm wondering if anyone else has been in this situation? My graduate school contact says that with OGS it's easy to backdate the payment, but she's not sure about SSHRC. I'm preparing for my defence in two weeks and I really don't want to postpone it four months, as I'll be starting my doctorate then. Anyone been here? What happened? Thanks so much for any insights you can share!
