  1. What do people usually do in winter? Considering a grad student income etc! I'm not a fan of sitting at home for a month watching TV shows so...suggestions?
  2. I've started procrastinating to an alarming extent after getting an admit to grad school. So not I have 3 major projects and 2 assignments to do in 3 weeks, apart from studying for exams coming up in a month I am so screwed! I just want to graduate fast and get on with preparing for grad school. But this laziness is killing me!
  3. I was surprised by how much my decision was based on how badly the program wanted me and not the other way around! And application procedure-wise, it was an absolute nightmare. I thought my SOP wasn't good enough, my GPA was not high enough, I didn't do enough research about the universities, I applied to way too many ambitious ones, maybe I made a mistake in my Resume. The only thing that quelled my fears was my first admit. At least somebody thought I was good enough to get accept to their program.
  4. Same here. The status still says 'submitted'. I will be accepting another offer and will reject Berkeley in the unlikely event that they offer me admission.
  5. This is great advice! I'm an international student so understanding the extent of research etc is only limited to what I can find on the web. I did read about the DMDI research grant Thanks a lot!
  6. Similar dilemma - UT Austin vs U Mich for MS in Mechanical Engineering (in Manufacturing): Plan to continue for PhD after that. UT Austin is great and much more cheap, but U Mich has such varied research and is very very renowned in Mechanical engineering. How much does reputation matter? i.e. degree from UMich vs UT when applying for R&D jobs or postdocs?
  7. All my friends applying for a degree in electrical engineering or computer science have received replies from most of the colleges they applied to. Then there is mech - everyday there are a maximum of 5 new posts on the results page. Is this normal i.e. does this happen every year? and WHY? Sincerely, Refreshing-emails-every-10-min-since-january
  8. What is with so many posts saying 'from SUT' on the results page?
  9. Hi, This was a question I had for a long time: If a student is accepted to the following 2 programs: 1. PhD under a Professor X in a field Y in univ Z 2. PhD under a Professor A who was a student of X and does his research in field Y in univ B Which one should he/she choose assuming rank of univ B > Z. Since the field is the same, both programs are a good fit. Would your answer change if: a) the other program offered funding and the one you chose first did not? if the student were applying for MS instead of PhD? c) if the univ rankings were reversed? d) if there were more professors doing related research in univ Z as compared to B? Thanks!
