  1. @slpgrad620. Thank you for your input & congrats! I don't know if you happen to know this as well, but does it have to be double spaced or 1.5 line spacing? I assume 1.5 lines.
  2. Thank both you ladies very much! I'm attempting it as we speak, lol. I wish you all good luck!
  3. Hey guys, so I'm applying to Adelphi's SLP program & I'm confused by the personal statement. I never wrote a research proposal before, so in this case, since it's our personal statement, what the heck do they want? How long is it supposed to be? Do we include all aspects, like our findings? The prompt is here if anyone forgot it: "Speech-language therapy is a constantly evolving career that focuses on diversity, developing evidence-based practice, clinically-relevant research, as well as inter-professional research and practice. We aspire to enhance client-centered and effective treatment that will provide individuals with communication disorders the opportunity for full participation. As an aspiring speech-language pathologist, we ask you to write a research proposal or a community-based project that aims to enhance and/or facilitate the participation of individuals with communication disorders in their respective communities. Your project or proposal can address a specific communication disorder of interest to you across the lifespan (e.g., autism spectrum disorder, aphasia, swallowing disorder, voice disorder, etc.) ." Thanks in advance.
  4. Hello all, So, I'm in a bit of a pickle: I am applying for graduate programs in Speech-Language Pathology for what will now be my 3rd time. In my prior 2 application seasons, I had a combination of a poor GPA (3.1 overall, 3.5 last 60, & 3.7 major) as well as poor GRE scores. I decided that since July I would begin studying for the GRE, as it is my last possible option to increase my competitiveness as a candidate. I've gained relevant work experience, had great SOP's and LOR's but if you don't have good GRE scores/GPA, it won't get you past the first round of decisions. My initial scores on the GRE in 2014 were 136 quantitative and 144 verbal & 3.5 AWA. I studied diligently 5-6x a week for the past few months. My practice exams via Magoosh and Manhattan prep averaged my scores around 144-154 for both sections. However, this past Saturday when I took the exam, I completely bombed the quantitative with a 135. My verbal increased to a 149, but I was disappointed I didn't at least break 150. Needless to say, I felt very disgusted since I studied for so long. However, I decided not to give up as I still can re-take the exam before most of my program deadlines. I intend to take the test again 3 weeks from now (Dec. 13) and study more of the quantitative while still practicing verbal here & there. My question to you all is: What material would you think is the best quality that compares to ETS? I had the Magoosh 6 month trial but it expired & I'm debating if I should buy the 1 month prep for $80. I currently have at my disposal: the Manhattan prep 5lb book (which was very useful for studying quantitative), the 1-6 Manhattan prep series, The ETS official guide along with math & verbal, Baron's & McGraw Hill's New GRE math and GMAT review. I also have been reviewing the Magoosh free verbal practice cards and the two free power prep software mock exams. Of all this material, which do you think would be the most helpful to improve my score over the next 3 weeks? Also, have you found yourself in this type of predicament & somehow improved? Sorry for such a long post & thank you for reading!
  5. @macklin_b I agree, I couldn't believe it either when she said people applied that quickly. I completely forgot it was rolling admissions, maybe that's in part why they urge you to apply so quickly, maybe you have a better chance of being accepted? I don't believe they want your application fee money that much, because when you apply online they easily waive the fee for you & also when it's getting close to the deadline they waive the fee then too. I think maybe it's to show NYU they're worth having because they're bringing them in a lot of prospective applicants. But what I don't understand is that its NYU, the name sells itself, doesn't it? @Crystal Renee I think each counselor must have a different rule of thumb because my admissions counselor didn't recommend for me to do anything except to apply right away. Meanwhile, my stats are not competitive at all. I know I need a higher GRE score to compensate for my GPA. So, with that being said, why are you pushing an applicant with such poor stats to apply? I'm not trying to put myself down, but I'm being realistic, especially since this will be my third time applying. I'm glad your friend had an admissions counselor who was honest with her about applying. I suppose my counselor is just looking to show how many people she can bring into the program. They're very confusing indeed. I wish you ladies the best of luck. This is a very stressful and frustrating process.
  6. Hello all, a few questions: first, has anyone been accepted into this program yet? I understand it was just recently implemented so I don't know if anyone has started any coursework yet. If so, how do you like the program? Second, has anyone else had a BAD experience applying to this program? I didn't ask for one, but I had an admissions counselor call me one day saying she'd walk me through the admissions process and keep me updated. At first I thought this was fine, but she's been VERY pushy into getting me to apply ASAP. For one, when I first began my application she was trying to push me to do an application when the deadline was the next day! I tried explaining to her that I'm studying to retake the GRE and that I'd like to take a thoughtful approach in preparing my personal statements. But she ignored that and told me to just apply. After I told her I'd like to apply to a later deadline, she would call me one a week asking about my application. I told her I've been busy and I will get to it. She basically expressed to me on the phone, condescendingly that their more adamant applicants finish their applications in 2-3 weeks. When I asked her how far I was in the application, she immediately responded with "not far at all". Am I the only one whose received such negative feedback ? As I recall from my undergrad Slp program, many of my professors stressed taking the time to fine tune your applications, not rush them! Mind you I work full time and study for the gre six days a week. I've been doing nothing but preparing for this application season! But in my most recent phone call with my representative, she basically implies I could care less about this. thanks for reading my frustration.
  7. Hey! So I tried calling their graduate admissions office numbers & the numbers basically lead me to a dead end. Anyone found a new number for them or was able to get in contact another way? One of my questions maybe you guys can answer for me. I'm doing an online application & mailing in the supplemental documents. Anyone know if we're allowed to submit the online application first? Before we mail in the supplemental documents? Thanks.
  8. Hi! So I recently discovered Aba and was thinking of pursuing aba for my masters rather than speech. Although I'm confused about a number of things, the first being many schools in NY and NJ offer certificate programs, so I would major in special education with a concentration in Aba? How many aba courses are necessary to be a qualified aba therapist ? Will I need a good number of psych pre reqs? I have stats and psych 100, because speech therapy required those classes. Also, does anyone know if ballstate is a reputable place to receive my ma? They have an online program, but I'm old fashioned and prefer a classroom. Is aba really competitive to get into at this time? Also is the gre preferred, if so which section weighs more the math or the verbal? Thanks in advance guys !
  9. Thank you all for your replies. I didn't think 6 was a lot at all either, in fact I was planning to add more. I'm still researching some schools, and I'm even looking into applying for 1-2 schools in audiology. I am using CSDCAS for one school, which is St. Rose. But hopefully with a few more schools added it should make it easier. I am applying to 2 SUNYS (New Paltz & Plattsburgh) which require the entire application mailed in, so that I can see as annoying. Also yeah, my LORs from last year are from 2 professors out of the field, but I can say they got a well rounded knowledge of my potential for graduate study. So I will try again.
  10. So this is my second time applying, and I'm having some issues/confusion/concerns with my LORS. Last year, I had many people willing to write LORs on my behalf. At last 4-5. 4 were used. 4 were all professors, however, none were SLPs or even audiologists. This year, I have the ability to ask people for LORs in the field. One said yes so far, however she also said six school was a lot. I felt bad because it's a privilege enough to even get her to say yes for a letter. I offered to knock it down to four schools, but she didn't respond to that email. My questions are the following: For applicants that applied to 10+ schools, how were you able to get your LORS to do that for you? Did you just have different professors for some schools? Also, for applicants re-applying, did you ask the same people who wrote you a letter from the last year? I feel a little embarrassed, and I'd hate to be nuisance, but, I do need the letters! Thanks in advance & good luck! May this year be the year!
  11. Hey! So, unfortunately this year was not my year to get into graduate school. But, I'm okay, I have faith & I believe I will one day. With that being said, I am trying to make my application as competive as I can. I researched a lot, and on one forum someone suggested to take courses as a non matriculated graduate student. That sounds like a wonderful idea & I was wondering if anyone had suggestions about what courses I should take that would be speech related? I was wondering if anyone could think of courses related to BaABA therapy, teacher of Hearing Impaired & Deaf, Special Education, etc as well at the graduate level. I figured that since I'll be applying for certifications & jobs in those fields, it wouldn't hurt to have related coursework either. I was hoping too if anyone could name any schools online that would offer this coursework. I'm willing to travel to a few colleges near me, but nothing too far. I currently live in New York & I simply don't have the financial means to relocate to take a few classes at a school I'm not even enrolled in. Thank you!
  12. Thanks guys for your replies. I'll look into those options. This whole process has just been so nerve wrecking. Good luck!
  13. So, I completed my WPUNJ application on the exact deadline 2/1/15 through CSDCAS. I understand tha CSDCAS needs to create a GPA for you, but I also understand that apparently your application will be fowarded to WPUNJ w/o having the final GPA calciuated. So, anyone heard from them? Because I have recieved no e-mail, nothing from their speech therapy department, but have recieved emails from the school itself regarding events & facebook page invites. Thanks, and good luck! P.S. I even called the school & left a voicemail...no reply. Oy.
  14. So, I was considering in the time I might have off given I might not be accepted, I was going to teach. Would that look good in a years time before the next application cycle or should I find something more relevant to the field? I currently live in New York & I was looking for SLPA jobs, but I haven't managed to find any in NY or NJ. I was also considering becoming an ABA assistant, but I think the certification would take longer than a year to receive. Any other suggestions? Or ideas how to go about ABA assistant, SLPA, etc? Thanks Also, would any university let me engage in research with them, or I could only do research at my current undergrad?
  15. Well, I wound up putting on a heavy plate since I decided to volunteer in two different places and work part time. So it became overwhelming, I guess I should've explained my case better. But thank you for you're input.
