  1. For those interested in working for LA County DMH, there is an application open for the UsCC Graduate Recruitment Program. It's a 2 years stipend of $18,500/year and the payback is 2 years working for the county. http://file.lacounty.gov/SDSInter/dmh/1005123_Underserved-Cultural-Communities-Graduate-Recruitment-Program-Flyer.pdf
  2. Apologies for the late response, it's a lot going on with classes and work. I'll be finishing up my first year in May so I'm extra excited about that. I like the program and the CRT(Critical Race Theory, it will be your best friend throughout the entire program!!!) curriculum. The program has its professors you'll love, hate and love-hate at the same time. I find the one's that most do not like to be the best professors. There are a lot of field placement choices in all the specialization areas: CYF, CMH, or CCB. If you plan to work with children I recommend you get placed at a school your first year so you can stack up on PPSC hours for school social work (trust it'll save you time in the end and during your career as a social worker). Have you heard back from any program? I know the later you turn in your complete application is when they time stamp your applications. And there were also late addition to the program, like a week before classes started.
  3. From my understanding as far as probation and the jail system goes with social worker, they have to be licensed because they expect them to stand trial for inmates for competency of that inmate. Some MSW programs offer placements at jail but that's as far as I seen a social worker without a license in LA County goes. You can also work with junveniles in probation and do some case management stuff with them but licensing is a key factor to really getting in with adults.
  4. Wow I remember freaking out about applying to grad school last year and I just finished my first semester at CSUDH. My stats were: GPA: 2.95 Work: 2 years in the mental health field Education: BA in Psychology; Mental Health Rehabilitation Specialist certification I only applied to CSUDH, CSULB and Columbia online program in Los Angeles. I was accepted into CSUDH and Columbia but I wasn't able to attend due to me conceiving a baby (long story lol). But if you have any questions about CSUDH's program I'm here to answer any. Good luck ladies!
  5. Ok wow on the coments about grammar, each are true and that's one way to be disqualified from any program because of grammar mistakes in your essay. Both programs are good in different perspectives. CSUDH focuses on the Critical Race Theory approach and CSULA focus is more generalize social work perspective. It all depends on what you want to gain from the program. I am currently starting my 1st year with CSUDH and I'm excited to see how the program's focus on critical race theory can contribute more to my knowledge of social work and mental health within the community. Also I am a alumni (June 2012) of Jump Start. Great program and I advise you to gain as much knowledge you can with motivational interviewing skills and progress note taking. The staff is very helpful in the program and with placements. You can also gain employment either from your placement or with another agency that is looking for assistance. As far a applying, your GPA needs to be a 3.0 in the last 60 units and if the program requires the GRE take it and get a good score. I personally didn't apply to school that required the GRE because I don't like or agree with taking a test to get into graduate school. And it's a must that your essay for the application be very impressive and answer all the questions asked. Don't write less than what's asked of the pages for the essay either.
  6. I got my email for orientation date(s) and had my field interview. School starts in a month and I'm excited and nervous. Anything back saidypooMSW?
  7. Some field placements will do drug screening. Not the MSW program itself.
  8. CSULB is doing the most of all the SoCal social work programs, and we'll all be doing field placements together. ANy news from the other programs or your not interested?
  9. That is so true. There is no thread for CSUDH. I got in back in Januarty, submitted my application in October. I called because the university still hadn't sent me an acceptance confirmation and it's because the program hadn't filled all the spots yet. But just last week I was emailed my package to fill out for first year field placement. So I emailed it back and will be dropping it off this week.
  10. Keep your head up saidypooMSW and stay positive. You got this!
  11. Yes I got in to CSUDH 2yr program and accepted in January. I had been in communication with the MSW program these past couple of weeks that I alomst forgot I was pending with CSULB. It wasn't my first choice but convienent to be closer to my home. Good luck to those on the pending list, I pray everyone gets in.
  12. May 15, 2015 Dear _________: The School of Social Work admissions office is about to conclude this application evaluation cycle. We appreciate your patience during this period. As you know, your application was placed on a pending list to be considered for acceptance later in the cycle. Final admission decisions are determined according to available program seats and the application assessment. Unfortunately, based on your ranking among other applicants, we cannot offer you acceptance into the Master of Social Work (MSW) program for Fall 2015. Each application is important to us; therefore, the assessment process is conducted in a thorough and systematic manner. The decisions are based on academic preparation, references, work/volunteer experience, and personal statement. We receive a large volume of applications each year for a limited number of seats. The process is highly competitive with many qualified candidates turned away. For your information, you are eligible to apply to the program more than once. The requirements and application for Fall 2016 will be posted on our website in October 2015. If you intend to reapply, please send us written notification before December 15, 2015. For guidance on how to strengthen your application, please email a written request to CHHS-SW@csulb.edu after August 15, 2015. Please note that receiving guidance does not guarantee you admission in a future cycle. We wish you the best in your future endeavors. Sincerely, Lisa Fascia, MBA Director of Admissions School of Social Work Admissions Office California State University, Long Beach 1250 Bellflower Boulevard Long Beach, CA 90840-4602
  13. Thank you. Congrats to you as well with CSUN & CSULA!!!
  14. I applied back in October to both CSULB/DH and was put on pending status in January. And I got accepted to CSUDH that following week.
  15. The wait is agonizing!!! I should just accept that I didn't get in.
