  1. I'm applying for a masters program where the average undergrad GPA for the current class is 3.67, but my GPA is a 3.42. My GRE scores are a little above their average by a point or two, and I think I'm going to have really positive letters of rec. My question is, should I talk about my GPA and why it might be lower in my statement of purpose? I don't know if this would do more harm than good. My explanation would be something along the lines of, "two summers ago, I had an internship in X and I found that I really want to do X. Since this internship, my GPA has been a 3.65 and 3.73." I'd word it much more elegantly for the SOP, but you get the idea. Also, it's worth mentioning that I was taking fewer engineering (my major) courses for these two higher GPA semesters than in the previous semesters where my GPA was lower (ranging from 3.2-3.3).

That being said, I was taking fewer engineering courses for these two semesters than in the previous semesters where my GPA was lower (ranging from 3.2-3.3).
  3. Yeah, I'm an American. Hopefully my GPA doesn't hold me back.
  4. I'm an engineering science and physics double major with a minor in math applying to UT, LSU, Texas A&M, and Colorado School of Mines. My GPa is sort of low (3.422), but I've worked on a couple design projects related to petroleum (hydrofrac waste water treatment process), and have also done a little bit of undergraduate research on this topic. I've had two internships at smaller petroleum companies, one where I was a field engineering and one where I was in the office working on well evaluations. I'm pretty sure I'll have 2 extremely strong letters of rec (one from a teacher, one from a supervisor), and one good, but not as positive one from a second teacher. I've scored 164Q/154V/5.0W on the GRE. I've visited two of the schools and met with professors there, and I intend on visiting the other two before I apply to those. Do I have a chance at these schools, or is this a lost cause? I'm worried that my GPA might be too low, but I'm hoping my other stuff will be enough to make up for it.
