  1. I'm in a Comp Lit programme, so it might be slightly different, but the three schools that actually considered admitting me were all public, two of them were offering full funding whereas one only offered for the first three years, which might have had something to do with my international status. I think half the people in my cohort are internationals all with full funding (assistantships not fellowships). I think it's not so much whether the school is private or public (though the private schools obviously hare more capable of covering your tuition) but how much the department/school seeks to have an international profile, in which case it's probably more likely to fund you even with the higher cost.
  2. Sorry to hear that Dog! It must have been hard when you were so close! Here's hoping for a great year for you and positive vibes for the next season!

I didn't use uni accommodation so I'm not entirely sure how things work within the acomodation office but still... 1. I think in most cases you are able to express an interest in accommodation before being allocated a college, at least uni wide accommodation. Obviously you can't start applying for college accommodation before you have a college. 2. There's definitely a very good chance. Obviously no one is guaranteed anything but generally international students are given a preference. I briefly considered uni accommodation and though they didn't have a wide choice left it was still possible to get something as late as August. 3. You check places like spareroom.co.uk and the database accessible through the acomodation office. There are lots of rooms in shared houses or living as a tenant or lodger somewhere. 4. As far as I know you are very unlikely to need to share a room with anybody. You may need to compromise on the size of your room if you're strapped for cash but you'll definitely be able to get something to yourself. Housing is pretty expensive in Oxford, especially if you want to live very central. I had a small room (single bed and small desk) in a shared house in St clements and it was around 400 quid everything included. I think most college halls are likely to be more expensive, though how much more is hard to say.
  4. I totally get that. I actually cried when I sent my email to Madison, it felt so wrong. But I'm sure you'll have a fantastic time in Amherst!
  5. Wow, massive congrats jean-luc and Radcafe! This is amazing news!!!

As in the Courtauld Institute of Art? I'm not sure how much (if any) student housing they have on their own but I think they're a member of the University of London so you can use their accommodation office -they have listings for private houses and also a number of student halls. There's also quite a few private student halls all over London, and Somerset House is so central you can live pretty much anywhere in zone 1, 2 or 3 (though the SE, E and N/NE/perhaps even NW might be your best options) -of course you can live further out too, but getting anywhere in London is already a hike and also you want to reap the benefits of studying crack in the middle of it all. I think google map is what most people use -before smartphones and everything the hardcopy London A-Z was unbeatable (and maybe it kind of still is -and you can get a pocket sized version). I've lived in and around London for quite afew years, so if you have any more questions feel free to pm me and I'll see if I can answer them. Also, you are kind of moving to the best city ever and will be studying at the best location too (nothing beats Waterloo Bridge for views or getting that sense of belonging )
  7. Who doesn't love used bookstores, thanks for these suggestions. Can't wait to check them out!
  8. I'm on my phone, so multi-quotes is sadly not an option but thanks all!!!! and WT, I've lived most of my life in notoriously rainy /windy places, I wouldn't have it any other way and I'll definitely make sure to explore the cities both north and south of there Windrainfireandbooks, thanks for the offer, I'll definitely take you up on that!
  9. I second what everybody else is saying. I can totally understand that you're worried about losing the Slaving aspect of your work, but when the difference in money is so great I think it's a sacrifice worth making. Also, there may be unexpected ways to still incorporate it into your research even if it won't take up as great a part as you'd hoped. Also, I assume that you knew that Amherst wasn't as big in Slavic when you applied and you still wanted to go there, while money may be the deciding factor now it's not like you're going a place completely at random. You provably still have loads you'd want to do there! Also, huge congratulations!!!
