  1. Late to the game here (haven't been on the forum in a while) but while the UC system is struggling financially, Irvine's anthro department is loaded. They just got a ton of Gates money. Departments have funding through external sources as well, so you can't really judge a school/department based on the state of the education system as a whole in a lot of cases.
  2. Making your own Thai curry paste actually isn't that difficult, and tastes so good. It's more fragrant and you can control the spice yourself! I second the bird's eye chile suggestion and definitely don't forget to leave the seeds in. If you have a blender and 15 minutes to cut stuff up, it's well worth it. PM me for some paste recipes if you want I've been making both red and green Thai curry from scratch lately, and have been really enjoying it!
  3. Problem with that is that it might be April 15 before I get off the waitlist.....
  4. Hi all, I'm having a bit of a predicament here. I'm waitlisted at a bunch of schools, and I'm wondering if people feel that it is worth it to spend (a lot) of money going and visiting these programs, since unfortunately waitlisters don't get that nice funded visit. I live overseas and this would not be a cheap endeavor. I'm also in to a program that had on-campus interviews, but I skyped in. So there's an additional cost to visit there as well. And unfortunately these programs are spread across the US. However, I was reading a different forum and it looks like for a whole lot of people, visiting completely changed their minds. They ended up going to programs they never thought would be at the top of their lists. I've also visited one of the programs via on campus interview and did a total 180 on my feelings about it (negatively--- it was my top choice and visiting made it clear that it wasn't going to be a great fit for me). Anyone in a similar position? What do people generally think about making decisions w/o visiting?
  5. One of my friends already got a UT Austin admit on January 29th (informal email from his POI). He's going for a visit next week. I have a feeling UT Austin was one of those where no one on grad cafe got an acceptance email (or cared to share), as he is not the only one I know with a UT Austin admit--- I'm aware of at least 2 more who are not on this site. Sorry to be the potential bearer of bad news
  6. The one she got was an official email---- she didn't email anyone/it didn't come from a POI
  7. Hiya! I'm waitlisted for NYU anthro, not MCC. But I know that my friend got a generic-y email from the Director of Graduate Enrollment. That's what I'm hoping.....this process is killer!! Need to keep some of that slayer cool
  8. Two of my recent faves from Anthropology: So glad I got accepted to my top choice...lol oh wait, still haven't gotten accepted any where so far. fml nbd yolo And for the win: F*&% you Columbia, and your archaic windswept halls of exotica.
  9. I want both of those things immediately.
  10. So.... there are acceptances, waitlists, and rejections posted for UCLA. But I got nothin. I think someone needs to teach graduate programs what the phrase 'process of elimination' entails...... if you didn't waitlist me or accept me SET ME FREE
  11. oh sorry team, I was speaking purely about the sociocultural. No idea about the rest. Didn't mean to be misleading. The admitted students were notified and invited to a visit day the first weekend in March. I'm on the waitlist and asked for more info about it. So for sociocultural, I know that the admits for sure know who they are. I guess if waitlist people dropped out then theoretically other people might get on the waitlist? I dunno, I didn't ask to that level of detail. There's a post that just went up on the results page about updating missing test scores or something....so I guess if your application was incomplete then maybe it's a different story? That was a confusing post. Can't speak to that.
  12. Ditto to the cooking thing! Hard to check your email when your hands are covered in food It's a great distraction. I work at a desk as well, and it's pure torture----- email and gradcafe are always up. Why do we do this to ourselves?
  13. They've notified their acceptances and their waitlist candidates :/
  14. Hi, claiming Columbia. It was a personal email and seems like (as someone mentioned above) they are interviewing only those they are kind of on the fence about. Wanting to 'hear more/discuss my project.' Pretty nervous about it as it was my first app and I don't feel great about my proposal, but excited to have a shot. But definitely does not seem like they are interviewing all potential admits. Just the feeling/vibe I get.
