  1. (please let me know if this is not suitable here) Hi all, I am looking for house rental in Pasadena, CA, better located between Caltech/PCC and old town, <1400/mo, >600 sqft, and I have a cat. If you are moving out and recommend your place, or if you are looking for a tenant. Please let me know -> gix_d at msn.com I will be moving in around mid August. Thank you in advance!
  2. Hi all, I mailed POI before the perspective student open house visit. He said he is looking for new students and is also interested in taking me. So we settled the meeting and had a really nice talk on the open house day. I told him I will probably (like 90% chance) join his group, and I will let him know my final decision in a few days. I mailed him one day after, saying if there's still quota (I was quite suprised so many perspective students are interested in his group, although most of them didn't contact him before the open house day), I will officially accept the admission right away. And....It has been 3 days, he hasn't reply. I mailed his graduate student this morning, who in principle should know that I am going to the group. No reply yet. what can I do? thanx!
  3. I am having a hard time finalizing my decision. I am grateful if you could give me some advices. UChicago: > have had some nice mail/skype conversations with many professors. they are all interested in taking me (since thay are basically working on the same thing as a group, just with different approaches/energy ranges). I am very sure their interests suit me super well, and their plans for the projects and my training will be good. They also provide funding plans if I don't like the school/department-provide one. > I care about my work/play balance VERY MUCH. Most people back in my home institude think I spend too much time for fun, but I did do my research better than most of them and balanced my time well. I am a hardcore cyclist, a marathone runner, and a sufer. I train every day and surf every weekend (workout in gym doesn't count). I don't know what it would be if I can't do that anymore, uh....in Chicago? > I am an international student, and my girlfriend (might be wife soon) is a programmer. She is going to the US with me, and she will probably have a CS master and get a job there. Caltech: > There's only one project in Caltech I like, and there's only one professor in Caltech is working in the project. He is a long-time member of the project actually. I have had some mail discussion with him, and he wants to take me into the project (I guess he is the one who admitted me...). We have similar interest in the science topic, but he is actually big in abother project (same topic) which I am totally not interested in its experimental techiques. He wants to take me as the only grad student in Caltech working in the project I like, and he has quite some other students in the other big project I don't like. btw Berkeley and Stanford have many professors/students/$$ in the project I am interested in. > Obviously, southen Cal fits my life style. And my girlfriend will probably have more chances to work in the CS industry there. > I have to admit "I go to Caltech" is hard to refuse, but UChicago is no less...people are telling me if I want to work in the acadamy after graduation, they are no differnece in ranking. Berkeley: well...I am still hoping that I will be admitted at the last moment, but I know my chance is low (~25 acceptances have been posted here). Berkeley is one of the main collarborator in the project mentioned earlier, and it has nice weather, nice eviroment, nice wave. But if I do receive an acceptance in the next few days, since its pretty late now, is there still good opportunities left for me? Thank you very much for reading my silly question.
  4. confirmation bias? They might not be intentionally lying you... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Confirmation_bias
  5. As about 20-25 have been admitted and posted here, I know my chance is low now. But it is my FIRST pick! I really really hope I will be picked at the last moment! It's very wired that they haven't send out the mass rejections until today. Does anyone know what's going on there? I have sent to the department admission office and got no reply for a week. I have also send to the school graduate division, and they told me yesterday that the physics department hasn't given them the decision yet. Is this the time to spam POIs? I am f* losing my mind. Thanks!
  6. I received my admission a week ago, physics PhD.
  7. Hi everybody, I just got admitted by UChicago, Caltech, UWashington and (maybe) Berkeley. My goal is to work in "direct detection" dark matter experiments, such as time projection chamber, silicon-based detector, X/gamma-ray detector...etc. Looks like Caltech is the weakest among them? Why is it so much into cosmology and gravitational lensing experiments? I am a international student from a small tropical island. I am a surfer and a cyclist. I am pretty sure I will die in Chicago or Seattle, and I want to do my PhD in California so bad. Oh my god I wish I still have a chance to get into Berkeley. Can anyone please tell me if you have heard that Caltech is planning to join experiments like LZ, CDMS(yes it is, but looks like not much $ into it?), XENON-1T, or others? It is crucial to my future. Thank you all for reading my dumb question.
