  1. Just withdrew my acceptance of NPSIA, so if anyone out there is still hoping on a spring email from Tabbatha, best of luck!
  2. correct. I'm considering rejecting the offer so that is one possible spot opening up! I'm guessing there will be others so hopefully some of you get some good news come April
  3. Hey haupia, congrats on the acceptance and the unbelievable funding! I was wondering if you, or @Akueldo, @MsFutureDiplomat, @CantHardlyWait (or anyone else) would be willing to share your profiles to give an idea of what exactly it takes to get serious scholarship money from a program like this? I'm actually currently in the process of applying to Canadian programs (I'm Canadian), partly because I have not yet written the GRE and am working abroad so could not apply to the top American programs. At the moment, I'm trying to decide between just accepting here in Canada or taking a year to write the GRE, apply to American programs and see what comes up. That being said, if there is essentially zero chance of me getting even a solid amount of funding then I would rather not waste a year/money/my nerves on all the applications (I understand that either way there is a chance I won't get funding, but it is more about whether or not I even have a shot at it). Prior to perusing gradcafe I thought I had a pretty solid profile, but some people on here blow me out of the water, so I wanted to see if you are all also those people. Any feedback would be great, and congrats to all of you, i'm kicking myself for not having written the GRE right out of undergrad!
  4. @Kamins0d thank you. Did exactly that, Tabbatha has given me until the 10th (and I have the feeling that if I haven't heard about SSHRC by then she would be willing to wait a few more days).
  5. Hey there. I'm curious about their funding offers as well. I had a similar CGPA, and a year of int. exp. working for local human rights organizations. I received $3,500 in funding over the two years, but I did get a full TA spot so that is just over 20 grand. Other people who have posted here have instead gotten quite a bit of funding (e.g. $17,000) but only received a partial or no TA position. I was a bit surprised that I only received 3,500 in entrance money, but I'm thinking that perhaps they have tried to spread the funds around, so that those with TA spots would get less than those who didn't get them? (or maybe that is me just trying to justify why I didn't get as much funding as I hoped for). I'm also not complaining, I know the applicant pool is really strong and am pretty happy to have received what I did. Just thought I'd echo what you said and offer my $00.02. Did anyone also apply for OGS/SSHRC funding? The offer letter said that I have to accept NPSIA by April 3, but I don't think OGS results are due out till mid April and my acceptance hinges on getting one of those scholarships. I was under the impression that decisions didn't need to be made until April 15th so I'm a little surprised by the 3 week deadline. I emailed Tabbatha about it but nothing back yet, just curious if anyone has thoughts on those scholarships.
  6. Yes, I received mine last week. Received 3,500 in entrance scholarships, plus just over 10,000 per year for a TA position. (conflict studies stream) Congrats on your acceptance!
  7. http://carleton.ca/hr/wp-content/uploads/CUPE_4600_u1.pdfarticle 23 (page 43) has information on salary. Maybe your TA position is split between two people? Thanks for sharing btw, and interesting subject matter. I'm guessing you also applied for conflict analysis and conflict resolution? Did you apply for OGS/SSHRC funding as well?
  8. myfirstgoose mind sharing your stats/background? curious to see what it took to get 17,000 funding (that is the highest I have seen posted anywhere for this program). edit: and congrats, obviously. very impressed. edit 2: and I'm with WhiteIR, the TA offer I have is split between Fall and Winter semesters, at 5,144 per term, so 10,288 for the year, and it is applicable for both years. Yours very well might be different, but I think that the TA fees at Carleton have been set in a previous collective bargaining agreement or something along those lines.
  9. Hey Josh618, what documents did you have to submit re: financial situation?
  10. Also, @wintersolstice, any thoughts on requesting recommendation letters with only a week to spare? Both have written letters for me before, so they have something on file already. But I still am hesitant.
  11. Wow that was quick, thanks a lot for weighing in and congrats on JH. Not really sure about the tax info stuff as well, but on the scholarship website it says that you need to submit information such as both parents tax receipts, divorce certificate (?), etc. But it was unclear about which of these were mandatory and which were optional. And yes, definitely a gamble. Just wanted to make sure it was closer to blackjack than slot machines. And I agree with you on the American/Canadian aspect; although they don't mention it, I do get the feeling that a lot of the funding is directed towards individuals from less affluent societies in order to ensure they get people from a broad spectrum.
  12. Essentially trying to figure out how competitive the scholarship is, as I won't be able to attend without it. I think I have a pretty strong application, but I really don't know what the competition is like. Positives: I graduated with a 3.89 GPA from McGill University (Montreal, Canada) Spent the past year working for two different community based human rights organizations in Burma (i'm applying for the human rights stream) At least one of my two academic references should be quite strong I can get two very strong additional professional references Negatives: No second language Family background - my parents are divorced, but my dad is a doctor (mom is semi employed social worker), so not sure if my dads income would rule me out? **Deadline for application is a week from today (I applied to some other programs in the fall but somehow this one fell through the cracks and I just became aware of it - which means I'd have to reach out to my referees with only a week for them to submit, which I'm quite hesitant to do because I think it is quite unprofessional. I also may not be able to get my moms tax returns within the next week.) So with that being said, if I have a reasonable shot at the scholarship I will bite the bullet and reach out to my professors. But if I am totally punching below my weight with regards to the scholarship then it isn't worth me compromising my good standing with the profs and wasting money and time on the application. I have found it extremely hard to find any concrete info online about the scholarship. For documentation: if I can't get my moms tax returns, am I disqualified? How much does family background come into play? I have four siblings, two of which are in University (paid by my dad) and one of which still lives at home, so there is no money coming my way from them. Not sure how to best convey this info in my application, or what documents I will need to prove it. So if you have received the scholarship, I would love to know your profile so that I can see if I have a shot. Or if you got rejected, same thing. And any advice regarding the specific documents that would meet all of their requirements would be great. And yes, I know it is ridiculous that I am doing the entire application with a week to go. Sometimes thats just the way things work out. Thanks!
  13. k so this is an old thread but I'm wondering if anyone of you are still around and can help me out. 14. Small world. Studied at Mcgill and now living in Mae Sot on the Burma border. Anyways, congrats to everyone who got in. I'm in the same boat here, accepted, self-financed. Looks as though LCooperHall filled the Canadian quota for funding, congrats! (also small world I'm from Vancouver originally)
