  1. And honestly, in the biological sciences it is not necessary to email anyone. It's not a bad idea to email people who you would love to work with, but you won't be penalized for not doing it.
  2. Sure thing. I scored 166/161/5.5 V/Q/AWA, but I don't think the AWA actually matters. I have several friends going to top 5 schools with AWA scores at 3.5-4.5
  3. I would say the most important order of business is doing better on the GRE then. Also spend a lot of time on your personal statement, but I don't see a reason to do a master's when you'd be perfectly competitive for PhD programs with better GRE scores. I'd say aim for 70% below-ish minimum. I used Magoosh to study and I thought it was fantastic.
  4. What kind of PhD programs did you apply to? What is the breakdown of your GRE score? Either way, it's likely too low for many competitive programs.
  5. This. Talk to Post-docs in the labs if possible because if you're working as hard as you say you are, then there's no reason that they wouldn't take you especially since they don't have to fund you. Edit: I guess it's also possible that with all of the stress you haven't been particularly nice/sociable/likable, which is definitely something that is important
  6. At this point, they've more than likely rejected you, but haven't had the decency to send out emails.
  7. Definitely worth a try to reach out again and see if you get a response if it's been more than a week or 2. Sometimes things sink to the bottom of inboxes and faculty are busy people.
  8. If they haven't given you an offer by now, it's unlikely you'll get an offer you'd like on the 15th.
  9. Schools ask for your transcripts before you start and I've seen a few schools with clauses that say they can revoke your admissions if they see fit. I don't know how likely it is, but I'm sure it's possible.
  10. UCSD has made offers. The deadline for a lot of these acceptances are in 4 days. They've almost certainly all made offers and have had people commit by now.
  11. Just know that according to the April 15th resolution, you would need to obtain a written release from Purdue to renege on your acceptance of their offer. "However, an acceptance given or left in force after April 15 commits the student not to accept another offer without first obtaining a written release from the institution to which a commitment has been made. Similarly, an offer by an institution after April 15 is conditional on presentation by the student of the written release from any previously accepted offer."
  12. There's still technically a chance, but I wouldn't count on it if you haven't heard back by now.
