  1. Happy March 2nd friends! Manifesting luck and abundance for us all today, whatever our outcomes.
  2. I also think March 2nd, because it's a Friday and it seems like they come out the first or second Friday of March. I HOPE we find out March 2. I applied to the Ed.M Specialized Studies program.
  3. I've been accepted to my top choice, School A, with a 2k scholarship. School B and C gave me almost 20k. How do I negotiate with school A to give me more money using B and C as bargaining chips? Is this a thing that people do for MA programs? Thanks
  4. Thank you for answering my questions, I really appreciate it so much!
  5. Thank you so much for your reply. Knowing that definitely eases my anxiety. If I may, I'd like to ask you: how are GRE scores usually considered? Mine are the only negative aspect of my application package. I'm wondering if applicants will still be considered with a lower score, or if there is some sort of cut-off/other barrier present.
  6. Are you crafty at all? I'm probably going to give people kombucha and/or bath/beauty things that I make myself. If I get accepted, I will also give them each a mug or keychain with the school logo on it. A nice little gift basket, basically.
  7. Hi farflung, Glad to hear. To answer your questions: 1. It was an apprenticeship that was directly relevant to my proposed project, yes. I did the apprenticeship with the intention of gaining some experience there and inspiration for future research. 2. I want to work in the U.S. and it's probably for the best since I am pretty horrid at learning languages due to my learning disability (auditory processing delay). 3. All of my independent research projects were anthropological, using ethnographic research methods (field school was archaeological though, obvi). My BA thesis, an ethnography which helped shape my current research interests, was awarded high honor in the Anthropology department at my college.
  8. Hey everyone, I'm wondering if anyone knows anything about the dept of Anthropology at Princeton. It's my first choice PhD program. I'm wondering if it is less competitive since 1) it is a top 30 program, not top 10 and 2) it is primarily focused on just sociocultural anthro, not in conjunction with archaeology or bioanth like most programs. Has anyone heard about the ratio of the accepted cohort to number of applicants in a given cycle? Any insight at all about the program at Princeton would be great. In my SOP for the program I talk about how 6 different professors there have done work that aligns with my interests, and how that work can support my research. Is this ok? Is 6 too much? I also discuss how my proposed methodology fits in with their methodological orientations. I think that these all demonstrate a good fit, but I'm still feeling doubtful. Would love to hear any insight into the best ways to demonstrate "fit." I worry that I'm being too specific by talking about my fit with the specific works the professors have done, rather than their overall work, but it's hard to comment on their overall work in relation to mine because they are all very accomplished and have done many things, and not all of their work necessarily compliments mine, just some of it. I am also curious about the level of research experience applicants usually have in Anthro. I've done a thesis, two independent research projects and a field school. I'm taking a year off now and have spent the summer in the field I want to work in. It's hard to gage just how competitive of an applicant I am when I'm not sure who I'll be up against, and I only have a BA.
  9. I earned my BA in Anthropology this past May at a top-tier liberal arts college, and am now working towards applying to graduate school. I am applying to both PhD and MA programs, but I really want the PhD. Bad. I have been working towards a PhD in Anthro since my sophomore year of college by getting as much research experience as possible. I have done 1 field school w/ an independent study built in, 1 semester-long independent study abroad, and an undergrad thesis (for which I received high honors in the Anthro dept at my school). I also presented at 3 undergrad conferences and built strong relationships with professors who are writing my letters of rec. I am spending the next year getting more practical/work experience within my specific research interests, and reading a ton of books, to really gain as much insight as possible into what I wish to study and make a killer argument for my fit in the departments in my application essays. I am wondering what the general applicant pool to SC Anthro PhD programs will be equipped with in terms of experience. I think I have done well for myself, but I've not been published, I've not presented at the AAA conference or anything like that. Who might I be up against? Are my credentials anywhere near competitive for a PhD in SC Anthro? If not, do you have any suggestions about how I could improve my application package? Thanks!
  10. Applying to master's programs in Socio-cultural Anthropology in hopes of becoming more competitive for a PhD program in a few years; get some publications, go to conferences, more research experience, etc. However, the PhD program at Yale in SC Anthro has some people and resources that are a perfect fit for my research interests. Stats: Went to Mount Holyoke, BA with high honor in Anthropology. CGPA: 3.35, major GPA 3.72. Haven't taken the GRE yet. 1 field school w/ an independent study, 1 independent study abroad, 1 honors thesis. 0 publications. Presented at 3 undergrad conferences, no professional ones. Have some work experience in my research interests. Worth it to try? Or go for it when I have more credentials? I already wrote a rough draft for the Yale SOP, and I think it may be better than the others I've written.
