  1. Hello, I am in the similar situation, I have been accepted to CMU and Duke as well. From my knowledge, CMU has sent some Ph.D statistics students to its own Ph.D. program, but the program is heavily focused toward the application part of statistics, and you won't get to take mathematics courses while attending. I think the same is true with Duke, but if you are into Bayesian statistics and want to pursue your study in Bayesian, Duke should be good for Ph.D preparation. Also, Berkeley and Chicago are both great in statistics, so I would recommend you to attend Berkeley or Chicago if you want to pursue Ph.D in the future. You should definitely look into each program's curriculum and find out if each program provides good amount of theoretical statistic coursework in preparation for Ph.D. Also, you should ask each director of the program to find out the placement of previous students on graduate programs. Best of your luck, and should you choose to attend CMU, I might see in the near future
  2. Hello, I am one of those who are joining the hype of data science and statistics. This year, I applied to several statistics, data science programs, and today, I received all notifications from the schools that I applied to. Here is the list of schools that I applied and the status of each application Duke Statistical Science Masters - accepted Carnegie Mellon Masters in Statistical Practice - accepted Columbia Masters in Data Science - accepted New York Masters in Data Science - rejected Columbia Quantitative Masters in Social Science - accepted New York Masters in Applied Social Science Research - accepted Penn State Masters in Applied Statistics - accepted So, I am having a big problem in making a decision on which school to attend this fall. Part of me says that I want to join the data science hype and attend columbia, but unlike NYU program (which I got rejected), Columbia seems to be less flexible with its curriculum and with limited scope of learning material. Besides the machine learning course, I cannot find much difference between Columbia's data science program and Carnegie's master's in statistical practice program. Duke has fantastic statistics program, but I am not a big fan of suburb locality. What are the merits to attending data science program compared to attending traditional statistics program? Will people with data science degree have significantly better employment options than people with statistics degree? QMSS also seems to be a neat program. I want to receive some feedback from fellow data scientists and statisticians!
  3. It's time of application season, and I am having hard time deciding which schools to apply to As a notification, I am an international student studying in US institution Current School: University of Pennsylvania Major: Mathematical Economics Major GPA: 3.75 Overall GPA: 3.5 Relative Coursework: Advanced Econometrics, Mathematical Statistics, Real Analysis, Data Computation Analysis, Abstract Algebra, Mathematics in Finance, Optimization Undergraduate level Mathematical statistics -- B- , Graduate level Mathematical statistics -- A First part of graduate level real analysis -- B- , Second part of graduate level real analysis -- A+ Programming Language: R (very strong), Python (strong) Research Experience: worked with Wharton professors for 2 consecutive years but the works are not really relevant to statistics Letters of Recommendation: going to ask one mathematics professor (real analysis course) in which I got A+ and two statistics professors one, but all of them do not know me well. I am going to present myself to them in the coming week For personal reasons, I really want to go to MAS in Penn State. Other schools that I am looking for are U Pitt, Case Western, Carnegie Mellon MSP, and Rutgers Any thoughts on how I should decide which schools to apply for? Any comment will be really appreciated.
