  1. Hey guys! Finally got off the waiting list and was accepted to UMass Amherst!! There is hope after all I'm still trying to make my final decision but its mostly come down to Tufts and UMass. Could any of you kind Americans help out a poor Canadian? I'd love to get a sense of their reputations from the perspective of American students.
  2. Hey Jimleko - I actually recently graduated from there and heard from one of my old professors that they were already having prospective candidates up to visit, so I think they may have already made their offers. You should definitely still email just in case! Sorry to be the bearer of bad news
  3. With most of our applications submitted, and people hearing back from schools right and left, I thought it would be nice to start a thread for those of us who are still waiting to hear or stuck on a waiting list. List where you're waiting to hear back from and your waiting list woes! If you're one of the lucky ones who has been accepted to multiple schools, list where you won't be going! This can also be a place to ask questions about waiting list etiquette, deadlines, how to choose, etc! I've been accepted to MAT programs at Tufts and WashU, still haven't heard back from University of Illinois at UC, and I'm first on the waiting list for my top choice program at UMass Amherst. And the waiting is driving me crazy!!!
  4. It's also really important to remember that so much nuance is lost in the act of translation. That's a fact that is true of any modern language translation as well! Just because a text is accessible and available in English doesn't mean that you are actually accessing the the true meaning of the text. How can you possibly write an academic paper about a work by an acient author when you could be drastically misinterpreting the intended message because of a particular translator's phrasing? And even beyond that, how can one purport to understand the ethos/mores of a given culture when you can't even understand the language that that culture used? There are cultural practices of the ancient world that cannot be articulated or explained in English because we simply do not have a close enough equivalent in modern society. It is in those instances that a knowledge of the Classics becomes essential. One can even say the same of different languages and cultures today! Even having read English translations of French novels, historical texts, etc., and having visited every city in France, one would never be able to truly understand French culture without speaking and reading in the original language. This issue is even more pressing with regard to studying the Classical world, because we simply do not have the same access. Aside from ruins/art, the language of the ancient world is all the we have left to base our assumptions on. Although most people do not know Latin or Greek, and fewer and fewer schools are offering them as courses, it is the job of any potential historian to seek out the tools that they need to succeed. Those studying French history learn French; those studying the Italian Renaissance learn Italian. Why should Classical scholarship not demand the same level of knowledge? I completely understand that rejection is difficult to bear, and that we sometimes try to lay the blame anywhere we can to avoid confronting a difficult truth. But to attempt to dismiss the entire foundation that Classical scholarship is built on is an erroneous argument. If you want to have the same knowledge of the Classical world that any layperson can attain, continue on your current path. If you truly want to be a Classical historian, learn Greek and Latin. It's as simple as that.
  5. Hey, is anyone here the person who posted the UMass rejection on Friday? Was it UMass Amherst or Boston? I still haven't heard back and it's totally freaking me out.
  6. Oh hey! Just got off the phone with Professor Keitel at UMass' MAT program. Apparently their admissions committee is meeting today, so people should be hearing back today and tomorrow O.O
  7. Just got rejected from the University of Michigan MAT program... What a bummer. Congrats to all those who got in!
  8. I'm definitely dying because I just saw that people heard from WashU about MA acceptances, but i haven't heard anything about my MAT application.
  9. Thanks! This puts me a little at ease ;P
  10. Congrats to everyone who has heard back about acceptances and interviews! Just wondering if there were any M.A. or MAT applicants out there who have heard back about anything... I've been crazy-stalking old gradcafe boards and it seems like people don't hear back until mid-February at the earliest, but I'm feeling vaguely paranoid ;P
  11. Hey guys!! Hope everyone is getting close to being finished with grad school applications (finally!). I just sent in my application for the MAT program at UMass Amherst, and made an enquiry about doing a personal interview, which is recommended on the department website. I'm supposed to do a skype interview later next week, and have been trying to think of questions they might ask so I can prepare. I was hoping someone out there might have some insight into what sort of questions are asked in these sorts of interviews, if not what questions UMass specifically asks. I've been looking around online but without much result... Any help will be appreciated! Maximas gratias vobis ago!!
  12. Salvete omnes! I'm Violet, and I'm hoping to become a secondary school Latin/Classics teacher. I'm applying for M.A.T programs at University of Michigan, Washington University in St. Louis, University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, Rutgers, Tufts, and University of Massachusetts Amherst. Aside from Latin pedagogy, my research interests include Roman epistolography, Roman epic literature, and the history of the Late republic/early empire. I'm also a big fan of spoken Latin and the incorporation of modern media into Classics/Classical Civ teaching. Currently stressing over how best to write my statement of purpose - anyone else in the same boat? I'd also love to know if anyone has any insights to share about the programs I'm applying to - every little bit helps ?
