  1. Well I believe the professor that offered me the position in Oxford has a good reputation globally. I know that the university's name is not that important but I am just wondering if choosing Oxford is going to hurt my future opportunities in any form rather than going with ETH or even Toronto. By the way, I checked Oxford's subject ranking in Computer Science and it was far beyond my expectations: it is 3rd right after Stanford!
  2. Well, in terms of branding, I believe it is not true that all universities from US are well known comparing to their peers in Europe. Choosing an offer also depends where you are going to build your career. However, I have seen young professors with PhD from EPFL and Zurich here in Canada. They are both excellent universities with global names. At the end of the day, it is your performance in PhD that matters most for perusing academia not the name of the university (take a look at faculties' profiles in any university that you want and see where they graduated from: you may get surprised). If I was in your shoes, I definitely choose EPFL rather than UCSD and UTA.
  3. Hi, I was lucky enough to get admission letters from the University of Toronto (CS), Oxford (CS), Cambridge (ENG) and ETH Zurich (ENG). All are fully funded. I am confused as hell! Each of them has its own advantages and disadvantages and the rankings for each of them is not consistent (Ex. Oxford is 3rd in QS Ranking but 7th in Times). My heart is with Oxford (CS) but please let me know if and why you think it is not a good choice. PS: I also have an option to wait for one year and take GRE exam to try my chance in US (but I feel my chances are not high).
  4. No offence, but I just have seen(on internet) or heard bad things about the way British people treat foreigners. I've never been there. As for the living cost or program cost: it's not my first concern; Fortunately, I was lucky enough to get scholarships both from Toronto/Oxford and my home country support program. I have no preference between starting my post graduation career in EU or US/CA and I think that's making me confused here. However EU is closer to my home country/family while I think the opportunities in EU are much less than US/CA. Thanks
  5. I'm an international student for EU and US/CA. Currently attending University of Toronto (M.Sc. of computer science). I've received good news from the University of Oxford (computer science) for my PhD. Now I am wondering which way is better: 1. Stay in Canada and do a PhD here Pros: I can get Canadian Citizenship after graduation && I'll have a North American PhD which I've heard is kinda better than UK's && No racism felt here Cons: UofT QS-rank is 20 in CS && It's god damn cold here 2. Go for the U of Oxford Pros: Global reputation (QS rank in CS: 3rd) && I like cloudy weather Cons: A UK PhD or a US PhD?!! && It will take 5 years to get permanent resident card && British racism I have also applied for "MIT", "Cambridge" and "ETH Zurich" but not received anything yet. Thanks
