  1. Hello all, I last took AP stats in high school. I need a refresher on the basic stuff as well as some more advanced material. Here's a copy/paste of all the topics I need to know: Set theory, properties of probability, conditional probability, Bayes’ rule, independence, random variables, cdf, pdf, joint distribution, marginal distribution, conditional distribution, mean, properties of expectation, variance, covariance, correlation, moment generating function, uniform distribution, normal distribution, Bernouli distribution, Binomial distribution, exponential distribution, Markov chains, law of large numbers, central limit theorem, t-test, Wald test, confidence interval, pvalue, power of a test I hesitate to check out a book from the library simply because they often don't have answers in the back or whatnot. I need to be able to teach it to myself, using only occasional help from online forums such as this, or whatever. Can anyone recommend a resource? Thanks!
  2. Talking GRE here. It seems that I did really well on the first quant section, but on the second they are all 4-5 in difficulty. If I miss, like, 3 in the first section, will that lower the difficulty of the second?
  3. Hey guys, So I'm happy with my verbal and analytical writing scores, but the quantitative is not quite where I'd like it to be. Can I take the GRE and only do the quantitative sections? This would help avoid 'fatigue' and save time. And if I do that, am I correct that schools will only see my highest scores from each section?
  4. Sorry for the 'trolling' perception and thanks for all the responses. It's just sad to think that I'm stuck in a lifetime of wage labor because I didn't major in English. Ha ha. I'll keep pursuing what I'm passionate about, but if I continue to suck at it I'll just have to invent a widget or something.
  5. So if you can score in the 96th percentile on the verbal section and not be qualified for anything, what is the point of that section of the GRE?
  6. Hey guys, I got 166 verbal (96th percentile) and 161 quantitative (80th) on the GRE. I have undergrad degrees in history and economics and a master's in education. I taught history for awhile but quit because teaching high school sucks. So I went back to school and got the bachelor's in economics. I applied for a few Ph.D. programs in economics but was rejected except for ones that didn't offer funding, and I couldn't go to those because I don't come from money. My GPA is only slightly above 3.0 because I was very lazy when I was younger - I did really well with the economics degree. My plan this year is to get some research experience, and to bring up my quantitative score on the GRE. Then maybe take another crack at economics programs. My question is, based on my qualifications, are there any other disciplines I should be looking into? Maybe something tangentially related? I'm sick of waiting tables and I want to be a doctor in something. Anything really. With an undergrad in econ I'm probably capable of law school, but I'd have to take the LSAT and also pay for law school, both of which are major deterrents.
  7. P.s. apologies to the moderators if this belongs in 'the Bank.' I just figured since it was somewhat major-specific it might be better to put it here.
  8. So whereas at most schools people are getting a stipend and tuition waiver, I have to take out a gigantic loan and cover the whole thing. My idea is to: a. Apply for any scholarships/fellowships/whateverships possible b. Go for a year, do really well, and then use that to apply to other schools. To the point that I think I might send out a bunch of emails to econ departments and say hey, if my transcript looks good, will you offer me funding? It seems like most masters programs would take two years, so this would be less costly in terms of time. Thanks in advance!
  9. Well that's what I mean. I was into the idea of studying economics, but I doubt I'll be able to land a job with just an undergraduate degree, so I need to find another major and find one fast. rising_star, that does seem like a more reasonable way to go about strengthening my application for another at-bat. Even thinking about starting over at this point feels daunting. I need to give it a couple of months! I came to the conclusion about GRE/my institution since I had a lot of really good writers review my personal statements, and my GPA was above what most places were looking for. I did get rejected from a health services research program for having research interests that the committee deemed were not a good fit. Thanks for the responses everybody.
  10. I applied to 8 econ programs of varying levels of quality and was rejected. I think this is partly because of my GRE (96th percentile verbal but only 80th math) and the fact that my university’s undergrad econ program is not that good (I have had to take way more math classes than are required in order to be competitive for grad schools, and none of my classmates are going for a doctoral level degree, as far as I know). The way I see it, my options now are to: Retake the GRE, go to another university and get another undergrad degree in economics, and then reapply Pick another major from a list of rolling-admission type programs so that I can avoid option a. What does everyone think? What might I be qualified for given my background?
  11. Hello, I've been asked to come and interview for a program I applied to, as well as to go to lunch with some of the current students. My thinking is that I'll prepare for it by reading the most recent paper by each student (if they have one) and professor, as well as memorizing a bit of their biographical data and research interests, but I figure I'll see what everyone here suggests as well.
