Hey @bugabooo congrats on the Roosevelt acceptance! I'm not sure what kind of budget you're looking at, but you should definitely be able to find a one bedroom less than an hour away. I would recommend looking at the Bridgeport/Pilsen area to start -- it's close to the Red/Orange/Green lines on the CTA which all stop at Roosevelt and in the loop, and are generally very affordable. It's a gentrifying area and like most of Chicago a very segregated area. I lived in Bridgeport my first three years in Chicago and really liked it, it's very residential, neighbors will actually say hello to you on the street, and you can find decent apartments with yards.
You may also be able to find something in the South Loop/Printers Row area as well, which would allow you to be in walking distance to campus. The neighborhood tends to be more pricey, especially as you approach the loop. You also might be able to find something in University Village or the Near West Side -- this part of town caters to UIC, so I imagine there may be some student friendly priced housing.
You could also search on the North Side as well. Lincoln Park, Lakeview, and even Uptown and Edgewater would get you to campus in under an hour -- if you get an apartment close to the Red line. The North Side tends to be a bit pricier and whiter. I've been living in Uptown for 4 years and am very happy here, but it's generally considered a rougher neighborhood. For the first two years I commuted to the south side every day by train (even further south than Roosevelt) and didn't mind the commute. Lincoln Park and Lakeview are a little too...fancy for me, but the neighborhoods do have a lot of amenities.
Finding pet friendly housing in Chicago is very doable. You may be asked to pay a fee though. I would recommend looking at craigslist, padmapper, and domu for housing searches. There are also some apartment finding services, chicagoapartmentfinders and apartmentpeople. Basic info on chicago neighborhoods: http://www.choosechicago.com/neighborhoods-and-communities/map/
I'm happy to help with any questions you may have. Chicago is a great city and I'm really going to miss it.

Rejections are not always as negative as we all think. While I am rooting for you and hope you get some acceptances, I'm also happy that you're able to see the brighter side. It's not the end of the world, as we so often think it is. It's just a change of plans if it happens, and I like to think that those who can survive the application process (and interviews, and emails, and blah blah blah) can certainly do so more than once! After all, we've got to be pretty tough to do all this.
I forget sometimes how abnormal it is, to go to grad school. We're not the rule-- in many cases, we're the exception to it even before we're accepted anywhere.
Whatever happens, I think you'll find support here.

And you are the reason for even more women not going into PhD programs. You can't expect things to magically change for you, everyone who is different has had to fight for what they want. If you go into a PhD program the lone woman, you may inspire other women to follow suit and breakdown stereotypes that your male colleagues hold about you. Stop expecting men to come "save" you.

Honestly, I thought the same thing about the PDF. I still find it super weird, but after a handful of current students separately all told me the same thing, I did it their way. I guess it protects against formatting issues, and a .pdf can be opened on nearly any device, but it's a lot of steps to go through for one simple act. I got really positive responses from each one I sent (a total of five), so I guess it was the right thing to do. Really involved and I think too complicated, but it seems to have gone over quite well. Personally, I think a nicely composed email would/should have been fine. A handwritten note is probably nicer as long as you have good handwriting!

Okay, here's the way I did it:
    1. find a good thank you letter template
    2. make a basic letter
    3. using basic letter, create multiple personalized letters
    4. convert file from .docx to .pdf
    5. Compose a short email to each recipient, with the .pdf letter attached to the email. (I did it this roundabout way on the advice of multiple grad students in that program. I wouldn't have thought to do it this way otherwise.)
Below is a watered down example of the contents of the email, not the actual letter.
    "Good afternoon, Dr. ___,
I've attached a letter of appreciation for being able to participate in Interview Weekend and to better express my gratitude for the opportunity to interview with you. Interview Weekend was an experience that I value highly, and I hope to hear from you soon.
Thank you again for the opportunity and experience.
    (insert email signature)"
What I'm trying to say is that, yes, I think an email could be appropriate. Keep it short and sweet-- it's just informative. This way, they'll know very quickly that you're an awesome and thoughtful person before they even get the letters. I don't know when your AdCom is meeting, but if there's any chance they'd get the letters AFTER meeting, the email would have already arrived.

Seriously!! I've planned a visit to the school that already accepted me but hasn't decided on funding yet, and I'm like "okay so what if I show up with like, gift baggies for everyone?"

I sent five on Monday evening and so far, there have been four replies including the one I was talking about today. I had two replies Monday night, one from faculty. Then one from my host yesterday and the one from faculty today. I don't think it means anything about the decision they'll make, honestly. The replies have all been short, polite, and neutral. I think it'd be a little rude for them to not reply at all, but maybe I would think something else if no one had responded to my letters. I hope they respond to you! I sent notes to the three faculty who each interviewed me, my host, and the student who organized the interview weekend.

Haha you couldn't be more wrong picturing me as a fedora-wearing hipster. Hell, Id rather be some overdressed tool than a hipster! They're the lowest form of life on Earth! I'm more of the 'scientist with zero ability to understand fashion' type guy.

I can't believe people worry this much about what to wear! Chill out and just wear decent clothes. If they care that much about what you're wearing, then they're focused on the wrong things and they can go F themselves!

Wow, you're a psychologist, so I guess I shouldn't be surprised that you're referencing pseudoscience! It has everything to do with the character of the interviewers and interviewees. People of strong character won't care what you're wearing--like me. I have transcended such things, I hope one day you, too, will achieve such a level as I have . One of the quickest ways to spot a lying sadistic psychopath is to look for people that are overdressed.
