  1. I thought they stated that you didn't have to choose either of the concentrations at Johns Hopkins. I chose social inequality over global social change, but my research interest is actually a mix of both.
  2. Any UC Irvine admits heard about funding yet? It has been about a month since their initial contact, but further information about financial aid seems elusive. I asked the DGS and the social science coordinator but didn't get a clear answer. Was wondering if anyone else is facing the same problem.
  3. Hey! I found this link in an old post. It's a database that maintains stipend information from many different users. I find it really helpful! Hope you and others who are interested can make use of it too. https://gradpay.herokuapp.com/results/table/ Except I could have sworn there is another website that I came across with similar information but more robust user input. If someone else knows of another website out there like this, please share! Edit: Ah! Found it! Here is the other website! http://www.phdstipends.com/results
  4. Both of the programs I have been accepted to is giving me enough money to cover my international flight and domestic flights as well. Or at least they've stated they intend to. So just try to negotiate with them. Good luck!
  5. All my fellow Harvard applicants, I think the chance of us getting into Harvard has gone from slim to almost non-existent. To save myself the anxiety, I am already counting Harvard, along with Indiana, as rejections. Good luck to us all on the remainder of our schools! Base on your signature, I'm assuming you can't apply to all the schools you want to because of financial reasons. I'm really sorry that it turned out that way. I hope everything is ok. And I wish you the best of luck on the schools that you are applying to.
  6. You made me realized I should withdraw from UMass since I`ve gotten accepted into a program that better suits me overall. As for your recommendation to seek professors for a more reliable source of information, I think it is worth noting that many applicants have left academia for quite a while and/or majored in a different field. Both of these conditions apply to me. For those applicants like myself, do you or anyone else have any idea where we can get reliable information about programs? In my mind...the only place would be the sociology websites of the school we are applying to and, if admitted, the school visit. Admittedly, I chose the program I applied to base on reputation, the information I found on their websites, and how excited I am about the ongoing research projects in their program. I seriously don`t really know who is more well-known in this field and which program is up and coming for what subject. I would welcome more information on reliable resources!
  7. Woah! Woke up to see so much good news from people here! Congratulation to everyone who got an acceptance today! I'm thoroughly impressed by y'all! Well done!
  8. Bibimbab! Now, I am salivating at work... maybe I should change my profile picture to bibimbab....hmm....lol
  9. It's funny because I'm in Asia so I just woke up pretty much. Most of emails and notifications happen while I'm asleep so I've been looking forward to bedtime recently. lol
  10. Well, I thought I might be hearing from them soon, within a week or so, judging by their past notifications. Oh well! At least they're still considering my application. And yup! My username tends to have that effect on people. You can always have a stomach for ramen. Edit: Sorry bluefoxblue! I read your message wrong and thought you meant you're nervous about just Wisconsin because of the writing sample mix-up. It is still early in the game in general so you still have time before you hear from your programs, I'm sure. Go eat some ramen and have a good rest! Tomorrow is another day! Wow! That's crazy. Glad that it was settled but it would have sucked if everything went into your spam box. Close call. Now I think I'm going to go check my spam box.
  11. I got an email from the DGS of one school asking me if I intend to submit a personal statement with my application... Told me to feel free to email it. Turned out they just temporarily misplaced my personal statement. Received an email from the coordinator saying she found it half an hour later. I slept through both emails so I mercifully did not have to hyperventilate for half an hour. At this point, I don't even know if I should be happy they are still considering my application this late in the game or be a bit indignant they think I'm scatter minded enough to not send in one of the most important pieces of information that I have to personally write and submit online. Life!
  12. Nice! Looks like the rise of lurkers have finally arrived! Awesome username by the way. Sushi! Nom nom!
  13. Buahahaha Ramen is delicious, isn`t it?!?! I think I'm concerned with food about as often as I'm concerned with this whole graduate school business. Added a profile picture just for you, gingin6798! And thanks for the positive comment too. I am quite happy to get into those two programs, and, honestly, if I don't get accepted anywhere else, I will still be satisfied. Oh! And good luck to everyone who is still waiting for their first good news! It will come!
  14. Sorry, lurker here too. I just didn`t have anything to contribute. Just waiting around like everyone, I suppose. Also, I live half way across the world so I guess everyone is sleeping when I`m active.
  15. Hey, flatnwhite! Did you ask this question to Irvine? I was just wondering because I noticed your signature and I also just happened to have shot Irvine the same kind of email a few days ago. I also have not received a response. TakeruK and fuzzylogician, thank you so much for the information. I didn't realize that was an option, openly asking the schools to share the cost of my expense. However, since I have only applied to 6 schools and they are all over the country, I doubt I'll get into enough schools to do the kind of negotiation that you did, fuzzylogician. I have been accepted to two and am waiting on the rest, but small chance. It's good to know anyway. Thank you.
