  1. @rising_star and @Cat_Robutt thanks for the advice! My dog technically fluctuates around 19.5, so I probably could take her on the train if I really needed to! Glad to have that option. Also, paying undergrads is a good option I never thought about--and I appreciate the hotel website tip. It looks like I'll probably just avoid the plane if I ever need to travel with her. She's great travelling in the car--the only worry I would have with the train would be she is frequently very hyper and friendly, which not all people appreciate. Still, I'd be much more comfortable having her with me in a carrier on the train, even if I had to give her a couple of Benadryl to simmer down, than putting her in a cargo hold. Thanks!
  2. Does anyone have experience travelling with dogs? For the relocation I'm almost certain I will be driving with my dog with me (no problem--she loves the car!), but I'm a little worried about things like going home to visit for Christmas. Ideally if I'm going to be gone more than a few days I'd like to bring her with me rather than leave her with a kennel. My family lives in upstate New York and I'm moving to Chicago, so it's feasible that I can drive home whenever I need to visit. My dog is twenty pounds so I'm not sure how bringing her on a plane would work. She's probably too large to fit under the seat to travel in the cabin with me, but I'm really worried about the cargo hold thing. I also have no experience bringing pets on trains--does anyone have experience with this? My dog is friendly but energetic and excitable. Any advice or personal anecdotes is appreciated!
  3. Hi everyone!! Since it's THE DAY, I just wanted to check in and see where everyone ended up. I'm psyched to have picked UChicago!! I also notified UNC Chapel Hill on Monday/Tuesday, so it's possible a waitlist spot has opened up, if anyone was waiting to hear!
  4. Hey there--have you considered that the rejections may be less about your qualifications and more about fitting in with the program? To me it sounds that you're very qualified (although I don't know about whether those TOEFL scores are considered good) so all I can think of are that your Letters of Recommendation, your writing sample, or your statement of purpose may have had something that negatively influenced the decisions. If that's not an option, it's possible that the programs you applied to really aren't a good fit for you. It's not necessarily about the universities being high-ranked, but if you look at the faculty that compose the program, your research interests might not align with anyone's or you could be interested in a research area that just doesn't fit in with their programs. For next year I would look into whether other programs might have faculty who have areas of study that better align with your research interests. Good luck! And April 15th is just coming up, it's possible you'll be brought off the CUNY waitlist.
  5. Will anyone be attending UNC Chapel Hill's visiting event this week? I'm looking forward to it! Feel free to shoot me a message to say hello if you will be attending!
  6. Thanks for letting me know! I can move along with the decision-making process! Sounds like you've made your choice--congratulations!!
  7. Haven't heard a thing from them, so don't lose hope! Today I got waitlisted by Duke, which is a bummer because I really liked them Now just waiting on Cornell and UTexas, but they were both at the bottom of my list.
  8. PS I wrote a really long, thoughtful reply to the Yale thing and then when I went to submit it my internet was cut out and I lost it. But the long and short of it is I didn't apply to Yale because I had read that information and they need to seriously revamp the department if they want to fix this situation at all. To me it's a bit of a dealbreaker--I don't want to be in a department where that kind of thing is happening. Plus I fear that the nature of the ivies themselves sort of can stagnate programs--I want to be looking at new things or looking at old things in new ways and be as cutting edge as possible in my research, and if you have a stagnated department you're not going to get that.
  9. Cactilio--best of luck! If you're at the top of the waiting list I'm sure someone won't accept their offer and hopefully you'll be moved up to acceptance!
  10. Well, on a superficial level, Santa Barbara is going to be a lot warmer! It's a beautiful town in a great location with nice weather. I don't know anything more about either of those programs and my specialty's not Golden Age, but I think if you check out the Spanish thread from last year, I remember reading that a few people had looked into Wisconsin and it seemed to be highly regarded. Have you heard from any professors that you could be working with?

    Albany, NY

Hi guys! Just wanted to post a tip for anyone lurking here and considering moving to Albany for the upcoming year. I've lived in the Capital Region my whole life and have loved living here although I'll be moving in the fall for school. Anyway, wanted to put out that a great resource is alloveralbany.com, a local website which is really pretty emblematic of the community. It has information on food, things to do, local government, the neighborhoods, and they love interactive maps. They also take questions--essential things like "what's a good local plumbing service"--and put them out to the community for comments. Best of luck to any graduate students coming to the Albany area!
  12. Congratulations to all on your acceptances! I really like the program at UNC Chapel Hill, but unfortunately the funding package they offered me was not as good as UVa or UChicago. I am waiting to hear back to see if I'll receive additional funding--if I receive that then their package will be the same as UVa (and similar to UChicago after accounting for cost of living differences). Although I really like all the programs that I applied to, a major part of the decision will come down to funding. Dulcinea, you applied to SEVENTEEN programs??? I can't even imagine going through that process for each application, it was hard enough completing six.
Gracias! (Que perdonen la falta de accentos!)
  14. Hey there--I've been hearing back. Applied to six (UNC Chapel Hill, University of Virginia, University of Chicago, Duke, Cornell, and UTexas Austin) and have heard back from the first three (acceptances, luckily!). No word from the last three yet, but I'm expecting based on the Results Page here and the university websites that I should be hearing by the end of this week or the next. How are things going for you?
