  1. Prompt: SuperCorp recently moved its headquarters to Corporateville. The recent surge in the number of homeowners in Corporateville proves that Corporateville is a superior place to live than Middlesburg, the home of SuperCorp's current headquarters. Moreover, Middleburg is a predominately urban area and according to an employee survey, SuperCorp has determined that its workers prefer to live in an area that is not urban. Finally, Corporateville has lower taxes than Middlesburg, making it not only a safer place to work but also a cheaper one. Therefore, Supercorp clearly made the best decision. The move of SuperCorp to Corporateville cannot be justified as the best decision. The argument has faulty assumptions that need to be evaluated on a deeper level. Although corporateville had a surge of homeowners, it does not prove to be superior. The two cities cannot be directly compared as we do not know the demographics of the two areas. Middlesburg might have younger residents that are more willing to rent than buy. Since Middlesburg is more of an urban area, there might be more condos and apartments than there is houses. To strengthen this argument that corporateville is superior due to the surge in homeowners, we would need to make sure that the demographics are similar before making conclusions. It is mentioned that Corporateville has lower taxes but that does not prove that it is necessarily more affordable. The average living expense in Middlesburg could be lower than that of the residents in Corporateville. This can be possible since Middlesburg is predominately urban and everything is more accessible. For example, an employee might be able to save money taking public transportation in Middlesburg but that wouldn't be possible in Corporateville. One would need to evaluate the costs of living of the two areas before assuming that one is a cheaper deal. Finally, the survey showing that employees prefer to live in a place not so urban can be false. The employees surveyed can be biased due to their own personal preferences. Some employees might prefer to live in Corporateville without understanding any of the changes that will arise. These employees could possibly be looking for a change which doesn't prove that Corporateville is superior and that SuperCorp has made the best decision. The survey would have to eliminate all bias and take in account the reason why the employee prefers a non-urban area. To say that SuperCorp has made the best decision by moving its headquarters to Corporateville is based on assumptions that do not hold true in some cases.
  2. Prompt: Technology, while apparently aimed to simplify our lives, only makes our lives more complicated. Technology is constantly impacting our lives whether we acknowledge it or not. Some believe that technology is a useful everyday tool that ameliorates common tasks. On the other hand, there are people who believe technology makes our lives more complicated. Although some justifications can be made for both thoughts, technology most certainly simplifies lives through its numerous benefits. The most impactful technology to mention is the smart phone. Compared to a decade ago, smart phones are now so common that every age group seems to own one. This astonishing change can be attributed to the many uses of the phone. From connecting to others to setting an alarm to finishing important tasks, the smart phone has endless purposes. Simple tasks can be done with a touch of a button creating an efficient lifestyle. It is evident that technology is able to impact us individually through a smart phone. Technology also has a great impact globally with businesses. Through the use of technology, companies are able to use softwares to analyze data. Businesses are then able to use this to improve their strategies. Technology allows quick assessment of the issues at hand so that businesses are able to spend more time with strategic planning. Similarly, the healthcare industry has greatly been impacted by technology. It is hard to imagine that not too long ago, patients were being charted by hand. With the invention of tablets along with softwares hospitals use, charting has no longer become a tedious task. With a few clicks, doctors are able to send prescriptions to pharmacies. This type of technology has allowed doctors and nurses to spend more quality time with their patients. All these benefits from technology is hard to deny. We have each been a part of one or another. Even so, technology can also have a harsh impact creating more complicated lives. If people depend too much on technology and use less critical thinking, our learning experiences will greatly be overshadowed. People must not become dependent on technology to a point where productivity is compromised. It is clear that technology is within our everyday lives. Technology is powerful for creating connections, completing tasks, making businesses more successful, and healthcare industries more efficient. These many uses supports why technology immensely simplifies our daily lives.
  3. Topic: As people rely more and more on technology to solve problems, the ability of humans to think for themselves will surely deteriorate. Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the statement and explain your reasoning for the position you take. In developing and supporting your position, you should consider ways in which the statement might or might not hold true and explain how these considerations shape your position. In grammar school, we learn basic arithmetic using strategic approaches without any aid from a calculator. As we are introduced to such items, technology becomes a common crutch that we rely on. How humans use or abuse that crutch will determine their ability to think for themselves. Humans’ intellect will not deteriorate with the existence of technology. Instead, technology will be the ameliorating factor for many problems in our world today. The use of technology has affected many parts of our world such as medicine, business, and education. In the medicinal world, discoveries like blood pressure monitors and CT scans can make the difference between life and death. The use of technology in this environment allows for quick detection of any problems. In return, more time can be spent taking care of the patient or arriving at a diagnosis. Likewise in business, softwares are commonly used so the amount of time used to compute can rather be used to brainstorm strategies to improve statistics. Technology such as video chatting and texting has allowed people separated by distance to stay connected. Before these creations, families and friends in different countries were unable to communicate without the expensive international call fees. Services like Skype or ooVoo has saved many relationships. Likewise, applications in phones have individually improved many lives. There is an application for just about anything and everything. A great example is the application Mint that allows one to manage their finances. This application tracks your spending and displays them in categories so that you can create goals and stay on top of it. Although technology creates convenience and time efficiency, abusing the use of it can have harsh consequences on humans to think for themselves. We are taught in school in order to learn something, repetition and understanding is necessary. From time to time, we need to approach a problem using logical thinking in order to not lose our basic skills. In mathematics, a calculator can be reached for but the most important part is to understand how to dissect the problem first. Dependence on technology can deteriorate the thinking mind so it is important not to abuse the power. The abuse of technology can cause human thinking to deteriorate. It is important to not forget about the basic strategies learned throughout our educational years. Resisting the urge to depend on technology for unnecessary reasons will boost one’s confidence. Aside from that, technology has many positive impacts in our lives. The convenience of technology allows for the remaining time to be spent on planning. Technology has also connected many people together through communication outlets. Similarly, the use of technology has allowed individuals to stay organized through applications. Therefore, the existence of technology has had more positive impacts on human lives and their ability to think.
