  1. Such as a Mitacs Accelerate? I know the guidelines say you MAY interrupt the award, but do you HAVE to? Just wondering because I was hoping to do a mitacs this summer and then to be pretty much finished with school next May, and do a co-op, but then I would have to interrupt the award for longer than 4 months. Anyone know the answer?
  2. After many, many tries I got through!
  3. I find that its only reasonable to compare funding for similar programs Im doing a masters in planning and was offered $6500. A similar program offered me $10k. However my friend doing her masters in global affairs was offered double that by two programs... so best bet is to compare funding offers from other econ MA programs in Canada.. perhaps browse the results section of Grad Cafe.
  4. Would really appreciate help from anyone who has been in a similar situation!
  5. I have agreed to work on a project that is part of a Mitacs grant as a Mitacs Accelerate intern. These internships are supposed to come with a minimum of $10k stipend and involve 4 months of work for an industry partner. I have also applied for a SSHRC for this year. My final research project will be based on the work I will do for my Mitacs internship. I was under the impression that I could hold both a Mitacs and SSHRC and receive both sources of funding. As far as I know, neither limits what other kinds of funding you can receive. However I was just informed today by a fellow student that it is my programs unofficial (?) policy that if you have a Mitacs and win a SSHRC, you won't be able to get your Mitacs funding. Has anyone else run into this? Nothing I have signed or read so far has mentioned this so called policy. I do not know yet if I won a SSHRC, but I had a good shot so I want to prepare for the chance that I do. Do you think I should fight for the Mitacs stipend? I feel as if I should, as I am doing work and generating a report FOR the company and I should be paid for me time. Should I contact my grad studies office and ask them about any policies they now of? Should I ask my supervisor to show me a written policy that shows that I can't hold both sources of funding at the same time? Thanks!
  6. Background: I'm currently in a Master of Resource Management (Planning) program at SFU in BC. My undergrad was in forestry, but I want to move into higher level resource management and/or community planning. However, I've always been interested in site planning hobby farm properties. Unfortunately, my degree doesn't offer much in the way of studios or site planning courses. I may take a site planning course at UBC next year. Ideally, I think I would like to work as a planner, and do some consulting on the side for luxury horse property projects and hobby farm design but I don't know what kind of credentials or expertise I might need. I'm wondering if I need to pursue architecture or landscape architecture? If I want to design structures on the property such as barns, then I assume I would have to become an architect. Does any one know how I can get from where I'm at (environmental planning) to where I want to be in terms of degrees/certificates/experiences? Thanks!
  7. Does anyone know what the typical format is for an outline of studies that are requested for scholarship applications? Do they want past courses taken and courses you plan to take and what you want to shape your research around? Ie. should I just summarize my past and future education, research and what I want to do with it after? Thanks
  8. Thank for the answers from both of you! Definitely makes me feel like I made the right decision to forward them the revised offer LOL The $6500 is an entrance scholarship. I've talked to my supervisor about other funding opportunities and he has said I should apply for a SSHRC and that TA/RAships are available. There are also graduate fellowships of $6000 available each term and private awards. One of the research opportunities also has funding associated with it. I'm also planning on doing a couple co-op terms while doing my masters. As well, I plan to apply for a student loan to have my bases covered! I should be fine.. I got through my undergrad without much help besides my savings! I am in Vancouver (which is also where I did undergrad) so living isn't cheap, unfortunately!!
  9. It's Canada Tuition for the entire program is about $10,000. I am also planning on applying for SSHRC funding and TA'ships
  10. Hi! So I just accepted an offer to a school on Wednesday. They had offered me $6500 and before I accepted they had said to send them any offers other schools had made and they would try to meet or exceed those offers. The other school that had accepted me had offered $6000, which I have not yet declined, and today they upped their offer to $10,000. Would it be uncouth of me to send this revised offer to the school I have already accepted an offer at to see if they would be prepared to offer me more money?
  11. I have been accepting to two programs (my first choice rejected me) which are very different and I am having a very difficult time deciding which is the best choice. Simon Fraser and Calgary have both accepted me and offered me similar funding. I'll outline the main differences below..SFU - Master of Resource Management (Planning)-$6500 funding plus opportunity for SSHRC and TAship money which would entirely cover tuition and more-accredited planning program-co-op option-Focus is on environmental planning and resource management-research opportunities for pipeline benefit sharing agreements with First Nations, implications of Great Bear Rainforest Agreement, etc-supervisor is head of the program and has done some extremely prominent research-only 1 elective-allows me to pursue a PhD in the future if I choose to-no studios-very little emphasis on urban and community planning- no GIS or computer modelling course required-in Vancouver (I would like to work in southern BC and I am from the Lower Mainland)-more job opportunities in provincial govCalgary - Master of Planning-$6000 funding which covers half of tuition. I do not think there are opportunities for SSHRC or TAships (I will email and confirm)-accredited planning program-no internship or co-op option, but i can always find my own summer student job-VERY well rounded curriculum with a focus on environmental design and community planning-4 studios and major project-mandatory technology elective plus 2 others-could not do a PhD after-in Calgary (which is not where I would like to settle)-more job opportunities in local govAbout me:I have a degree in forestry and have a summer of experience working in forestry and living in a very small town. I am taking part in a legislative internship program with the government for 6 months currently. I am interested in natural resource management, parks and regional planning, and community planning and development. If you are familiar with BC, I would ideally like to work in the Lower Mainland/Fraser Valley/Island/Sunshine Coast/Okanagan. These are all areas with small urban centres and usually surrounded by forest and farmland and very much influenced by natural resource development and extraction. Ideally, I would like to work for a local government and they often would like you to be very familiar with municipal policies and community planning. I believe my 'dream' job would be to be a Parks Planner or Land Use Planner in one of these areas and also have broad enough experience to have input into community plans and development.SO my question is... Do you think it would be better to go to a school which places more emphasis on 'community planning' rather than resource management if I would like to work for a municipality? Or should I take all the experiences I would get with SFU, in a city I would like to live in, and cross my fingers I can find a co-op in a municipality? One other option I have been considering is going to SFU and if I have a hard time breaking into the municipalities, then take a graduate diploma in urban studies or applied planning... though that is more time and money..Thoughts??
  12. I am also waiting on UBC as well as Calgary. I am accepted to SFU REM and I am just waiting to hear back on funding, but it sounds very positive. Good luck to everyone!
