  1. not sure about pursuing how pursuing a PHD is at VT, but i was an undergrad there and can tell you that finding cheap and safe housing is extremely easy. The city is filled to the brim with cheap, and close housing. Pretty much the entire city is students, and since the campus is really only equipped to house maybe 5000-6000 students that means the other 20,000 of us had to find housing in blacksburg. You've got loads of different apartment complexs there all on the bus route. The weather is pretty good, you're going to get all the seasons. During the winter it can get cold and windy, but nothing too absurd. You will get some snow, but nothing that isn't manageable and the summers are hot, but not unbearable. Blacksburg really is a great college city i'm sure you will love it.
  2. I'm not sure what either of your end goals are, but if they involve actually working for the Federal Government the U.S. office of personnel managment has a very generous loan repayment program which pays up to $10k a year, with a $60k cap on an individual (http://www.opm.gov/oca/pay/studentloan/ ). So if you actually intend to work for the federal government, you can factor that in to your decision. I'm suprised more people don't mention this. Currently i work for the government in the Department of Defense and had no problems signing up for this program and having the government pay off my undergrad loans (they were small < 5k) but it was so easy and simple to sign up for that there was no reason not too! You sign up in 3 year increments, so for the first 30k you'd have to sign up for 3 years and then do that once again for the 2nd 30k. At the moment you do have to pay taxes on it, but i think they're working on changing that.
  3. WHen i've browsed the website and a few forums, i've never really been able to get any info on the class profile. Does anybody have this info? I'm just wondering what the GPA and 80-20 range or average GRE / GMAT scores for accepted students are for the MPA program and what % of applicants are accepted. It strikes me as somewhat odd that it's not posted on the website. i've been doing research on business schools and am used to the percentiles and averages being posted front and center. Are those scores less relevant for the MPA, and your goals and essays more important? Also does anybody have any info on what % of applicants just use GMAT scores? I've taken that, i've not taken the GRE and am wondering if it would be worthwhile to do so...
