  1. I want to pursue a PhD in linguistics. Due to family matters, I am unable to apply this cycle, but I am looking towards next steps. I graduated from undergrad last year with a dual degree in linguistics and Romance languages, and this year I am a Fulbright ETA. My interests are historical linguistics and Indo-European languages (esp. Latin, Romance languages, and Eastern Romance in the Balkans). I believe that my academic performance is strong, and my time as a Fulbright Scholar is also a plus. However, my weakness is a lack of independent research experience. I served as a research assistant in undergrad, but I did not have an independent thesis or conference papers. It seems more common for people to apply to a PhD program without a MA. Is this the new norm or is it better to have further study before jumping into a PhD? What do you think would be the best next step? 1) Post-Bacc studies PRO: bolster up ancient language skills, gain research experience CON: $$$, Does it make me look underprepared? Is it superfluous? 2) MA in Linguistics PRO: More research experience CON: $$$ 3) Apply directly to PhD PRO: a faster route to my ultimate goal; you get your MA along the way CON: Am I under-prepared? A non-competitive applicant? Any advice is appreciated!!
  2. Finalist for Romania ETA!!! (My email came at ~4:50, and it went to my secondary email, which seems to be the trend. So watch out for your secondary emails!)
  3. Semi-finalist for ETA in Romania! The email went to my spam folder at 6:01 EST last night, but I didn't see it until this morning... I was a wreck!
  4. Go to the Fulbright website, and in the top right corner there is a link to "Statistics". ( I have included the link below). From there, click on the link for the type of grant that you are interested in, and then you can select your country by scrolling or using the search function. For each country, there should be information about the number of applications compared to the number of awards granted for the past 3 cycles. I do not know if there is any other kind of database for cycles beyond the past 3 years, but I hope this helps you find what you are looking for! https://us.fulbrightonline.org/statistics
  5. I really hope so! I am sure they are, but I haven't received any information at all. I think it was all rather sudden...
  6. Hey everyone! I am very excited to finally get this application process going-- this is something that I have dreamt of applying to for a long time! I am a rising senior majoring in linguistics and Romance languages, and I plan to apply as an ETA to Romania. Unfortunately, I just found out that my Fulbright advisor at my university no longer works there anymore (no one was notified about this, though...), so any help/advice/commiseration is welcomed haha. I think this will be a great source of information. Can't wait to hear about everyone's experiences with this process. Best of luck to all!
  7. Currently I am double majoring in Linguistics and Romance Languages (Primary: Spanish, Secondary: French, Tertiary: Italian) and minoring in Latin. For a while now I have been exploring various PhD programs for linguistics (general as well as historical linguistics and Indo-European Studies), but I am also interested in seeing what options there are in the field of Romance linguistics. I have found that Berkley has an interdepartmental program that leads to a degree in the multiple Romance languages (in either a linguistics or a literature track), and I have yet to find another program like this. Does anyone know of other similar programs?
