Accepted to JHU for astronomy PhD! Most likely attending. But I'll visit first before committing. Any housing tips and such? Things to look out for? I realize that a city can change quite a bit in just a few years (i.e. since most of the posts were made here). I don't plan on driving - at least for now. Do JHU students get transit passes? Thank!:)
  3. Often I hear the phrase "oh this year or xxxx-year was super competitive." Is that really true? I have a feeling that the number of applicants to a PhD program, especially in a popular STEM field, will continue to increase, making it increasingly more competitive. Any insights into the admission process? Thanks!
  4. I thought I'd update. Thanks for the input! I've sent around some emails. Most haven't responded or have replied along the lines of "thanks for reaching out, let's chat if you're accepted..." But some were a little more enthusiastic, and asked for more details about my CV and pubs! And stated that they were looking to accept students next year. Soo I'm hoping to keep these channels. Hopefully, they'll help in my apps? Lesson: Once you get through the first one, the rest is a breeze! Good luck the rest of you~
  5. Thanks historygeek! How did the contacting go?
  6. Awesome! I guess that's the fun in this application process. Thanks a bunch!
  7. Thank you for the response! Those were definitely the kinds of questions I was thinking of asking. I'll give 'em a shot! Cold emailing is something I'm freaked out about but I'll see how it goes!
  8. I am planning on pursuing a PhD in astronomy (extragalactic/cosmology). I hear conflicting advice on contacting potential PhD advisors, but I figured I'd try to be a little proactive even if it might not be too helpful in my application process. What's the best way in contacting professors - especially in the sciences? To those who have had successful correspondence, how did you go about this? What kind of questions did you ask? Did you find it helpful? Forgive me for asking the dumb questions...I'd rather sound dumb here than in the email or the application! haha I'd appreciate any insights! Thanks:)
  9. me too...but not very hopeful at this pont
  10. If I haven't heard from my waitlist by now does that mean I'm rejected?
  11. Hmmmm gotcha. I was wondering about the 15th falling on a weekend. Hopefully, the goddess of graduate admissions will give me luck. I'll keep my fingers crossed Thanks!
  12. I've been waitlisted for 2 schools (JHU and Michigan). One since January and other since March. Both schools have told me that they have no updates yet at the end of March. It's past April 15th... does that mean it's game over? Or will admissions work through the applicant responses this week and give me a response? I've emailed the committee on Monday, but no responses yet. Not sure what to do.
  13. I'm applying for PhD programs in physics this fall. I've already taken the GRE general in the past with V159, Q 162. Do you think I should retake the GRE for a higher score? I know that physics programs don't give too much weight on the general GRE scores, but wanted your opinions.. Thanks!
