  1. Thanks for all those insightful posts in this thread. Now I have a fully funded PhD offer from a good university that is ranked around 50 in history, and then I have the Mapss with 1/3 tuition remission. Can anyone offer some insights/opinions that would help me make the decision? Perhaps on the question how likely one can land an academic job (tenure-tracked) after graduating from a 50s-ranked program, whether it is worth while to turn down a fully funded phd for the Mapss, and, in case I decide to not pursue a phd after the mapss, to what extent the Mapss can help one find a decent job in the US or overseas.
  2. I plan to pursue modern Chinese history. I was just notified that I was accepted to the MA program at UCI. Are you applying for the MA or PhD? I applied to both programs. I was only accepted to the MA.
  3. It's ok! My POIs actually interviewed me yesterday, and the interview was pretty short-about 15mins or so. I think I would get the result very soon, possibly some time this week. What's your subfield?
  4. Thanks for the reply! Have you got notification yet? I saw 2 posts on the Results and they said they got the emails on Feb 10. Assuming the department would send all Acceptances at once, I'm pretty nervous:/
  5. Has anyone got interviewed by UC Irvine?
  6. Last years they would've released results at this moment. Anyone has any insight?
  7. Thx guys. I just received rejection anyways.
  8. Hi Op, can I ask what your credentials were when you got accepted to one of hys MA programs in east Asia? I just submitted my applications to all these MA on top of many other programs. Mine is 161v 163q awa4 + 3.6 gpa from a R1, public state university+ an undergraduate paper prize from a regional Asian studies conference, and I am a international from China speaking mandarin as mother tongue. Would you have think if I can get into any of these programs? all the best luck in your applications to top5 east Asian history programs! Fingers crossed!
  9. I am finishing my application materials at this point, though more work is needed for some schools that require SoPs and/or WSs with unusual length. I think the application is a process in which one comes to understand himself/herself and in which one can see if he/she's really committed to the history profession. Have submitted LoRs requests online, the next thing I'm gonna do is to meet with 2 or 3 writing tutors next week to make my SoPs and WSs completely error-free. I will probably be sending all my applications once I am 90% satisfied with my applications. Crossing fingers.
  10. Just took my first GRE today. Not bad, I got v161 and q163 and I'm waiting for the AWA (presumably a 4/4, or 4/5). Not an ideal score for top 10 asian history PhDs, but I'm glad it's enough for almost all MA in east asian studies.
  11. Hi everyone, seems that I am the first Asian who is interested in East Asia here, so I'm glad to add some diversity here! I'm from China and attended SUNY Buffalo as a undergraduate majoring History, where I got a ok GPA. Fortunately, I won a paper prize from one of the regional conference by Asian Studies Association, saving me a lot of time writing and polishing WS, it makes my application somewhat easier. My interested field is 20th century China and, more specifically, the rise of nationalism and identity in this period. For my target schools, I am applying for 4 or 5 big names (Phds) where I can find a professor to work with. I will also apply for the Phd program at UCSD, which has a very strong Chinese history program. Other than these, I plan to apply for the East Asian Studies MA programs at Yale, Harvard, and Stanford. Everyone best of luck!
