  1. I'm international. This certainly does not sound like my experience this application cycle. I got interview invitations from more than half of the places I applied to (all fully-funded phd programs), and ended up getting offers from a few great programs (feeling extremely lucky and grateful), although I was rejected at my first choice program (post-interview) because of funding and was explicitly told that it had something to do with me being international. Also, for most of the interviews I went to, I was almost always the only (or one of the very few) international student(s) there. FYI, I got my bachelor's outside of US, but I did have one year of research experience at an R1 US university and all my letter writers are professors in the US, which I think helped a lot. Also, I was physically in the US when I applied, which also made things a lot easier. So like @user8111, I'm more than happy to answer any questions about applying as an international student. It's very, very hard for so many different reasons, but it's definitely not impossible.
  2. I think everyone has given really great advice. I just have my two cents to add about research fit with potential mentors. We all know research fit is the key in grad school application and you don't want to spend the next 5-6 years working with someone who does not share your research interests. But we are all relatively early in our research career, and you just can’t say for sure yet what kind of research you really want to do for the rest of your career. Obviously you have done a lot of solid research in a certain area that got you into great programs and helped you identify your specific research interests, but it’s probably too early to rule out other possibilities. I think there are many factors that may be even more important than research fit, for example, how good a mentor and/or scientist your potential advisor is, whether or not he/she respects students’ ideas and interests, what resources are available, how much he/she encourages students to collaborate with other profs, etc. So, don’t let the ‘not-so-perfect’ research fit put you off, and try to keep an open mind. Hope it helps with your decision making.
  3. To the poster that got accepted at UCLA - would you mind PMing me the initials of your POI please? Thanks!
  4. My POI at UGA just emailed me and explained the situation. I was told I'm a high alternate but they are not able to tell me where exactly I am on the waiting list. I got the feeling that they shortlist everyone they interviewed who's not given an offer. Feel free to PM me if you want to discuss it further.
  5. Check out the MA program in psychology at SDSU. "It is particularly appropriate for students who need advanced work to strengthen their profiles in preparation for application to Ph.D. programs", or so they say on their website. http://www.psychology.sdsu.edu/graduate/current-ma-students/ma-program-info/
  6. I'm pretty sure UCLA has sent out all their interview invites. They say on their website that applicants invited for the interview will be notified at least 2 weeks in advance. Their interviews are on Feb 9-10, so likely they've extended all invitations. Sorry :/
  7. Yes, this is for UMD, College Park. I got the invitation email from the program coordinator on Jan 3. Surprisingly, very few people have posted on the result page about it. Feel free to PM me if you have any other questions that I can help with.
  8. Yes. They are having the interviews this weekend (Feb 4) so I guess all interview invitations must have already been extended. Best if luck!
  9. I'm not sure if this has been discussed here before, but what is the best thing to do when you have got an offer from one of the top programs on your list and you still have interviews at other places, some of which you now know you will not go to even if you were accepted? For those programs that you do not want to consider anymore, is it better to decline the interview(s) (that you have already promised to attend) so that you are not wasting their time and yours? Or should you go anyways because all the travel, accommodation and interview arrangements have already been made and you actually look forward to meeting with your POI even if you are not going to work with him/her? If you do go, should you be candid and tell them up front that you would not like to be considered for admission anymore? Or just do the interviews as usual and not bring it up at all? I'm trying to think what would be the most appropriate and ethical thing to do, but it seems like a tough decision. Any thoughts?
  10. I can't confirm this either, but I just got an invitation to the admission weekend dinner via evite (I was invited to the interview earlier this week), which made me believe that they have a finalized list of attendees to the interviews already and are starting to organize social events. Hope this helps! Best of luck!
  11. Does anyone know if University of Indiana Bloomington has sent out interview invitations yet?
  12. I just got a phone call from a current graduate student who notified me of the interview invitation, right after I found an email from the program director that had been sitting in my spam folder for a while. So to those who are still waiting on UCLA, check your spam. And don't lose hope yet!
  13. I know UCLA said they send out interview invitations at least 2 weeks before the interview day. There's only 2 weeks and 1 day left before Feb 9 (their website says interview days are Feb 9-10). So I'm totally freaking out now. Has anyone got interview invitation from the department yet? To those who were offered interviews by their POIs, congrats! Could you please also PM me the initials of your POI if you don't mind? Thanks a lot!
