  1. I never had any problems in Old Louisville either, but I had multiple friends who were mugged or had their apartments broken into. If you live in Old Louisville, just be careful about walking home late at night, and also make sure your apartment has a main "security door" that locks. I would instead recommend looking at a place on Eastern Parkway. You can find full homes for rent and typically they are fairly affordable. The closer you get to the highland area, the nicer the rentals (but pricier!) The number 29 bus runs up and down Eastern and drops you off right at campus. Busses are free if you have a UofL student ID, though unfortunately most routes only come every 30/40 minutes, so you have to plan ahead. Also might be worth looking at Frankfort avenue. Cute area with lots of shops, cafes, and it's very safe! It's going to be a longer commute to campus though (15-20 min drive or 45+ min bus ride).
  2. You may want to look into residential programs! I worked part time in a residential treatment program for children in the foster care program. It's difficult work (oftentimes extreme behavior problems), but overall I found it was a rewarding experience. You could work first, second, or third shift. Obviously it depends on the organization's policies, but I knew people who only worked on the weekends to balance it with school. There are also residential programs for adults with developmental disabilities, also might be worth looking up!

Hello everyone! I'm an incoming MSW student at Umich for Fall 2017. I have a question about housing (as do we all haha). I found a nice leasing company online in Ypsilanti and I like a few of their apartments. However, on their site it says they will not approve an application until the applicant has visited the apartment in real life. Is this a common policy in Michigan? I'm actually living abroad until June, so I'm worried about waiting that late to get housing figured out. I could send my SO up to view apartments sooner than that, but it's a 5+ hour drive for him, so still fairly inconvenient.
  4. Hey, I wanted to ask you: how long did it take for the dean to respond to your email about reconsidering the scholarship? I actually emailed him a few days ago because Michigan raised my scholarship amount and I wanted to see if BC could possibly match it. Only problem is that I have to accept/deny Michigan's scholarship by the 15th, and I don't know if he'll have time to reply by then. How long did you have to wait?
  5. Has anyone had experience backing out of a program after accepting their admission offer? I accepted Boston College's offer through mail a few days ago and paid the deposit since they only gave us three weeks to reply. Just got an email from University of Michigan about my special program (I was an alternate before) and ended up receiving a position. I haven't completely decided I want to go to Michigan instead of Boston, but hypothetically, what would the process be for backing out of Boston? Just calling or is it more difficult than that? I know I won't get my admission deposit back... Ugh, I hate making decisions..
  6. Hey y'all! Looks like I'll be moving to Boston next year for my Master's at Boston College. From looking over this thread, it seems like most people recommend starting the apartment search for september as soon as possible. I wanted to ask - how hard will it be to find a good place if I wait until June? I'm actually living abroad until the end of May, so I was planning on taking a trip to Boston in June for a week and seeing as many apartments as possible then. Would it be better to just choose based on online listings in April? Thanks in advance!!
  7. Hey y'all! Just got my acceptance letter from Boston College So far, their scholarship is the best I've been offered (also applied to Michigan and Denver). Very much considering Boston now, especially since they have a global practice concentration, and my goal is to work with refugee and immigrants! I just made the mistake of looking at rent prices on Trulia, and woah... 2000$ a month for a studio!!? I didn't even know rent could be that expensive. (I'm currently playing 450$ a month for a one bedroom, and last year I was paying 250$ with a roommate...) Are there any towns or suburbs in commuting distance from Boston College with lower cost of living, or is that just what I should expect in Massachusetts?
  8. Just heard back from my special program (Global Activities) and was placed on the alternate list. I guess it's slightly better than a rejection, but still, I hate not knowing for sure whether anything will come of it or not. I guess I'll see if I'm selected for an interview for GSSA, fingers crossed! Good luck to all of you who applied Does anyone know if they'll contact selected interview candidates over the phone or through email? I'm currently living abroad so I'm worried if they try to call, it won't go through.
  9. Hey y'all! I've been accepted to the 16 month program in Management of Human Services & Youth and Children. I'm interested in working with the refugee and immigrant population in the US, so I also applied for the Global Activities special program. I had my interview for global activities about two weeks ago and the wait is killing me. If I get into the special program, I'm pretty much set on Michigan. I also saw that I was offered work-study on Wolverine access - sorry for the dumb question, but how exactly does it work? I know obviously I have to work an on-campus job, but if my work study amount is 3000$, is that dispersed at the beginning of the semester, or split up like a paycheck every two weeks?
  10. I was accepted at UMich before Christmas as well, and I received an email with my merit-based financial aid offer last week (1/25). I also directly contacted the financial aid office and they were able to tell me the direct loan amount I would be offered. Still waiting to hear back from my special program, but I've been told they'll notify by 2/15. So I would assume you'll hear back soon too!
  11. Hey y'all! I've been lurking on this thread for a while now, so I thought I'd go ahead and post and introduce myself I've applied to three schools - University of Michigan, University of Denver (dual degree international studies and social work), and Boston College. I'm hoping to focus on global social work, my goal is ultimately working with immigrants and refugees in the United States! Been accepted to Michigan and Denver, still waiting on Boston. Top choice is Michigan but we'll see if funding works out - hoping I get accepted to my special program (global activities) or get a GSSA position, because my financial aid is a bit lacking otherwise.
