  1. I am sorry for my earlier post. Something went wrong when I tried to edit. Acceptances you had: University of Washington-Seattle (5 years of full funding package with 1 year of fellowship), Brown University (5 years of full funding package with 2 years of fellowship), Oxford University (2 years of MPhil with fellowship + 2 years of DPhil with fellowship conditional upon successful MPhil), University of Toronto (PhD waitlisted) Research Area: Immigration, Demography, Political Sociology, Education, Quantitative Methods Final Choice: Brown University Reason: Oxford and Brown offered me better financial support compared to UW-Seattle. In the end, I thought getting a more systematic PhD education in the US would be better for me. I also thought I would have better chances of getting an academic position with a US PhD degree.
  2. Still no news at all from the Sociology Program at UPenn (I checked my application website but no rejection decision letter). Anyone in the same situation? I am thinking they somehow forgot to reject me, and am about to accept an offer from my second or third choice program.
  3. Has anyone else NOT heard back from UPenn? I have not been accepted, waitlisted or rejected. I know most people got rejected through their website. I checked but nothing has changed on my account ("View Your Decision Letter" thing doesn't appear on my site). They either forgot to reject me or I am being waitlisted for getting into the official waitlist.
  4. Same situation here. I was expecting to hear back from so many schools this week, but I've heard nothing. 2a3r9p.
  5. Do people know how the funding package can be negotiated when I tell the departments that I have a two-year funding from an external organization? The funding would cover almost half the tuition and provide me with monthly stipend of 1.8k for two years. I already have several five-year full funded offers, but haven't told them about this particular external funding yet (since I am in the last phase of officially securing this funding). I am not sure if the organization is going to allow myself to be funded both by the school and the organization. In this case, do you think there is any chance of negotiating special arrangements so that I am guaranteed funding for the 6th year in my PhD? Or increased amount of stipend in my 3rd-5th years? I am guessing that all schools provide incentives for students to get external funding.
  6. No, I have only been accepted to UW, and not to other programs. Actually, I was only considering getting reimbursed from UW. I meant that I don't want to fly to the U.S more than once for visit weeks. If I know beforehand that other schools are going to have their visit weeks in mid March, I will book my return flight a week or two later....that being said, I think I could carefully consider asking whether some programs are OK with students being reimbursed from more than two schools. My flight will probably cost more than 1k already... Thank you very much for your advice.
  7. Hi. I'm an international student applying for the 2017 fall cohort (Sociology PhD). Does anyone have general ideas on when the visiting weeks for Brown, UPenn, Columbia, Johns Hopkins and Michigan will be held? So far, I have one acceptance (UW-Seattle) and I'm trying to book my flight for the visiting week (March 3-4). If I get admitted to any one of these schools, I would stay longer in the U.S to visit them as well. Do most schools have visiting weeks in early-mid March? I need to book my flight to Seattle before they get more expensive so I was wondering. UW-Seattle only covers up to 300 dollars of my travel expenses and my flight is way more expensive than this..
