  1. Hi applicants!! Just to confirm, this is correct. No official transcripts are required to apply but if you are selected for an interview, you will be required to send them prior to your interview. Also wanted to wish you all good luck during this application cycle! I'm a current University of Texas student so if you have any questions at all, feel free to ask! I know how tough the application process is and how much I valued having people to ask questions. So no matter how big or small your questions, don't be afraid to ask. I also highly recommend contacting a current student at each school you're considering applying to just to get a feel for it! Good luck everyone!!
  2. Hey everyone! So excited to announce we have decided to hire a second genetic counseling assistant! The start date will likely be sometime in July but the application is open now. Highly recommended for a gap year job before applying to a genetic counseling program (can't beat getting paid to be surrounded by genetic counselors). Feel free to reapply if you applied to the first opening since that one is closed now (hint: cover letter). Let me know if you have any questions! https://utah.peopleadmin.com/postings/64573
  3. I'm probably going to disappear from the threads now but if anyone wants any advice or someone to look over their application, I'm happy to help! I know what it feels like to be rejected during round 1 and I wish I had more support/advice. So feel free to message me if I can be of any assistance! Good luck to everyone next year!
  4. Hey everyone! I was just accepted into a genetic counseling program so my hospital is looking to hire my replacement as a genetic counseling assistant! I was a second year applicant and this job really helped strengthen my application during my gap year. I was able to shadow (paid!) whenever I had time and learn how to take pedigrees. I highly recommend it for those reapplying in the fall! Here's the link for those interested: https://utah.peopleadmin.com/postings/63509 We're looking to close the application in the next few days so I recommend applying ASAP! Let me know if you have any questions about the position or city! Danielle
  5. This one: https://utah.peopleadmin.com/postings/63509 I also volunteered at Crisis Text Line (advocacy you can do from your couch) and Planned Parenthood. Also, the more shadowing you can get, the better!
  6. Hey everyone! I know there are still a couple hours left but I just wanted to share this opportunity for those of you that don't get in. My office is now searching for my replacement as a genetic counseling assistant in Salt Lake City. It has been an AMAZING experience and it really helped prepare me for graduate school. You would be an assistant for 8 genetic counselors and involved in all aspects of testing. We're hoping to start interviews in a couple weeks and the start date would likely be in June. If you have any questions about the position or city, feel free to ask me! Here's the posting for those interested: https://utah.peopleadmin.com/postings/63509
  7. Hey everyone! Congrats to everyone who was accepted! I have accepted my offer at the University of Texas so maybe I'll see some fellow classmates on here! To anyone who doesn't get in this cycle, don't give up hope. I know it sucks right now but I promise it generally winds up for the better. I've been there so I'm happy to help those of you preparing for the next cycle, just message me! I'm obviously not on the admissions committee or anything but I'm happy to share my experiences/opinions!
  8. Well my appendix decided to try to kill me a few days ago so surgery and recovery have kept me nice and distracted. Definitely not a fun experience but I'm glad it didn't happen during interviews or something. I now get Monday and Tuesday off work but now I'll have to make this decision/ talk to directors while on pain meds... I also won't be able to celebrate or drown myself in ice cream depending on the results. My plan regardless is to continue eating applesauce and mourning the loss of my belly button. Send help.
  9. Cost is obviously a big thing to consider but at the same time, an extra $20,000 isn't going to make a huge difference in the long run. Especially since we're guaranteed a job after graduation and some jobs even help pay off your loans, it's not something I'm extremely worried about. Unless that's the difference between you not needing loans and suddenly needing loans, a little extra isn't going to be a big difference. I know some people have been working a long time and/or have a family, but most of us are used to living the "college life" already. So if I need to live that way for a little while after graduation to pay off the loans a bit faster, it's not a big deal. My first and second choice are almost a $60,000 difference so that did make an impact on my decision because that's almost an entire year's salary (I also only liked one slightly better) but my other schools that are $10-$30k different were not really impacted. I guess I use cost more as a tie breaker than an actual factor.
  10. I think it's the opposite actually. I think schools tend to call out acceptances first because that way they can see where those people stand before they make the other calls. So if someone turns them down right away, they can start moving down the list. From my understanding, early calls are good! Just a heads up, VCU didn't ever tell me my status last year and they didn't really keep me updated throughout the process so make sure you stay on top of them. I actually ended up calling them around 2 or 3pm since I hadn't heard a single thing from them and they told me I was waitlisted. Hopefully they'll do a better job this year but just be aware that you may need to call them.
  11. I was actually just wondering about that. She confirmed my date but I don't have many details beyond that. I'm guessing there's another email coming because they didn't even tell us which building it's in or parking (which is a disaster) or where the dinner is. I was going to wait a week or two and then follow up if I still haven't heard anything.
  12. See you in April! Nope, I actually didn't even apply there last year. I just moved out here so it didn't even occur to me to apply last time. No problem! I wish someone had given me advice last year so I'm happy to help! It's so competitive that a lot of it is just jumping through hoops and knowing what they're looking for. But you still have a chance this year so don't give up hope!
  13. Hey! I'm interviewing at Utah on April 3rd as well! I live downtown (about 15 minutes from the university) so if you need anything, let me know! The assistant director told me they're interviewing around 40 people. I think that's about average. I'm also a second round applicant. If I get in this round, I'd be happy to give advice to anyone that didn't get in. Hopefully my application improvements work and I can spread my wisdom Just message me after D day and I'll be happy to look over your application and/or tell you about my experiences!
  14. No shame in being a second round applicant! I know it sucks right now but you can make so many improvements in a year. It'll also give you time to make sure this is truly what you want to do. Plus if you do re-apply, you'll probably get multiple offers and be able to choose rather than going to a school you're not excited about just because it's the only offer you got.
