  1. In a really painful decision, I just declined UCLA. Hope someone gets an offer!

    Oxford BPhil admits

This is frustrating. They said in the original offer email we would hear the funding result by April 12, and now it's past April 12 in the UK. I just emailed the administrator, and got an automatic response saying she's away until April 18. What the.

    Oxford BPhil admits

Okay, its April 12th. Has anyone got any notification about funding yet? I haven't, and am itching badly to email them to ask.
  4. Those of you who got admitted to the Oxford BPhil, have you heard back about either funding or college yet? I haven't heard anything since the offer email. Can we infer at this point that, for those who haven't heard back, the chances of funding are slim? Also, does anyone know how many BPhil students get offers to continue to the DPhil each year, and how many of them get funded offers? I've heard from a couple of people that it's difficult to get a funded offer for the DPhil, especially if you're an international student. But absent numbers, I don't know how difficult.
  5. I have exactly the same dilemma. I emailed an Oxford department admin asking what's the number of BPhil students who proceed to the DPhil in a typical year, and how many of them get funding. Her answer was an unhelpful "It varies from year to year". :S If anyone has any info, please do share it.

Got a missed call from a number with area code "650", and Google told me that it's for "San Francisco Bay Area". I called back. Turned out it was an online travel agency that I booked a flight with....

I don't think you need to pay for premium. You can kind of figure out the "role" and "university" from the blurry text. (Possible "roles" include "Graduate Student", "Faculty Member", "Undergraduate", and some others.) And the university name should be easy to figure out, in conjunction with the location. Here's mine. It's easy to see that the university is "University of California Los Angeles". I'm not exactly sure what the role is. But I'm guessing it's "Department Member"?

To add to the existing Academia.edu anecdotes, I had a profile view by someone from UCLA in late January, and I was accepted to UCLA last week!
  9. Big Ariana, what would count as big name conferences? Do you mean only prestigious competitive conferences like the Rocky Mountain ethics conference, or also big association ones like the APA meetings? What about graduate conferences and conferences by small philosophical associations?
  10. Hi guys, I have a simple question about campus visit. What do you do in a meeting with a professor during a visit? (Basically I've been admitted to a program, and a department staff is asking me which profs I want to meet with during the visit. I'm kind of intimidated by the prospect. What questions should I ask? Will I be wasting their time? Will they find out that I'm more ignorant about their areas than my SOP suggests?) Do you have any advice?
