  1. I'll start. Here are the one's I know. Some I received official emails, some i simply emailed and asked for the date: MIT Biological Engineering: 3/16-3/17 UPenn Bioengineering: 2/8-2/10, 2/22-2/24 (emailed and asked) Johns Hopkins: 2/8-2/9, 3/1-3/2 (according to their department website) UC Berkeley/UCSF: 2/10-2/13, 2/24-2/27 MIT HST: 3/1-3/3 (according to the email they sent out after you submit your app)
  2. Hey guys, i've noticed that interviews are coming out now. I've started another thread for people to post interview dates, so that we can stay up-to-date from each other and possibly avoid time conflicts among all the interview weekends! Best of luck everyone! https://forum.thegradcafe.com/topic/100057-fall-2018-bebme-bioengineeringbiomedical-engineering-interview-dates/
  3. Hey guys, i know we have a profile thread already. But since interviews are coming out, let's post the interview dates here so that we can try to avoid potential conflicts. Best of luck with everyone's applications and interviews!
  4. I'll also join the thread! Looking for inputs on my profile and whether it matches with the school list; I feel I might be overly ambitious... Undergrad Institution: Top public institution Major(s): Bioengineering, with honor thesis Minor(s): no official minor but completed all technical courses in MCB GPA in Major: 4.00/4.00 Overall GPA: 3.99/4.00 Demographics/Background: Female, International GRE Scores: Q: 170 (xx%) V: 165 (xx%) W: 5.0 (xx%) LOR: One very strong letter from PI back at home institution whom I worked with for 2 years, have a slight issue with it right now though: she tried to persuade me to do a PhD with her while I wanna change directions, so not sure if my rec letter will be harmed if I say no to her.... Any comments? Two from PI that I worked with during two summer programs. Both are supposed to be strong to very strong Research Experience: Two years in stem cell lab, basically running my own project instead of being RA for anyone, and two summer in cancer biology lab through two summer research programs, one of which is abroad (not sure if it means anything) Publications/Abstracts/Presentations: 1 first author (IF ~4), 1 second author under peer review (IF ~ 10), 1 fifth author in press (IF ~10). 1 first author national conference abstract, one poster presentation at a local conference, two poster/presentations for summer research programs Awards/Honors/Recognitions: Tau Beta Pi, Phi Beta Kappa, Dean's list for every semester, then some local, department, and school scholarships Fellowships/Funding: probably not applying to any due to citizenship Pertinent Activities or Jobs: Have been tutoring for a Biochem class for 4 semesters and is currently head tutor. Holds officer position on a professional club for two years Other Miscellaneous Accomplishments: Research Interests: Tissue engineering, immunoengineering, drug delivery Institutions/Programs: here's my tentative list: JHU BioE MIT BioE Harvard SEAS UPenn BioE Stanford BioE UCSF-UCB BioE Duke BioE UCSD BioE UW BioE BU BioE Northwestern BioE not sure if I should include UT Austin BioE... is this a match school or a safe school... or a reach school? Comments: comments on profile and school list? am i too ambitious?
  5. Hi TakeruK, thank you very much for your reply. Yes it is a very competitive program; the acceptance rate is ~2%. Each accepted individual have some kind of funding but they are all from different sources, depending on the identity of the student (international/citizen, etc.) My concern about putting it on is, since the fellowship is awarded through the program and generally not open for public application, if the adcomm decided to search for it they most likely won't find my name/the fellowship name. I'm wondering if I would be considered as faking my CV in this way.
  6. Hello everyone, I will be applying for PhD this fall and have some questions on writing my CV. I have attended two summer research programs, both offered external funding sources to fund my stay and research during the program. I did not directly apply to these fellowships; they were automatically offered as I am accepted into the program. However, I was told about the names of the fellowships that are used to support my stay. Should I include this in my CV as a fellowship I have gained, or should I completely leave it out since I did not go through the application? Thank you in advance for your inputs, and best luck for everyone during the application!
  7. Thank you Victorious Secret! This is very comforting! I will definitely work on my SOP. Shall I also talk with my professor about recommendation letters? What should the letters focus on?
  8. Hello all, I will be applying for BioE PhD programs this upcoming fall, and would like someone to assess where I lie among applicants. Also advice on how to improve my profile will be extremely welcomed. Thank you in advance! Undergrad Institution: Top3 public research university Major(s): Bioengineering Minor(s): None, but completed all technicals in Molecular & Cell biology--immunology Other courses: Two graduate courses, both A/A+ GPA in Major: 4.00/4.00 Overall GPA: 3.99/4.00 Demographics/Background: International, Female Asian GRE Scores: V 165, M 170, W 5.0 LOR: 2 Great and 1 Good. Research Experience: 2.5 years in cell-engineering biology lab. 1 international REU in Switzerland EPFL (2.5%-3%), 1 REU at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory (don't know how much fame does CSHL stands up now, but the REU acceptance is ~2%) Publications/Abstracts/Presentations: 1 first author publication (IF=3.7), 1 second author pub under peer review (IF~9), 1 mid-author under late stage peer review (revision submitted) (IF ~12). 1 poster at regional conference, 1 poster for REU. Awards/Honors/Recognitions: Tau Beta Pi & Phi Beta Kappa. Dean's Honor for each semester, Department award for academics, and some other small scholarships Fellowships/Funding: Couldn't find any for international students. May end up not applying. Please let me know if you know any Research Interests: Tissue engineering, biopolymers for drug delivery and immunotherapy Institutions/Programs: MIT, UCSD, Stanford, UPenn, JHU, UCSF/UCB, Duke, still deciding on other ones I'm not very sure on where my profile lies, and which part should I work on more. I have seen a lot of strong profiles in the forum as well as stories where a super competitive applicant didn't get into his/her dream program. Also, I am worried that not applying to any fellowships would lower my chance of getting admitted. Thanks in advance! Advice and suggestions would be welcomed!
