  1. That's very smart... and will definitely come in handy in the future eh..? I have a CV folder.. whenever I come across nice CVs of recent graduates I save them. I'm starting to get nervous. I was wait-listed last year, and I'm thinking that it might've been a bit arrogant to think that I'd automatically be sent to Ottawa again. I haven't yet heard from my school, and I'll be really crushed if I wasn't forwarded... I'm not going to lie. It's far too early to be stressing over SSHRC, last year was torture lol. As soon as I got back from the holidays my nerves over it started up again. Good luck everyone <3
  2. Good guess =) This is my third attempt for the PhD, foolishly never applied during my MA (doh). I've been told by numerous sources that your chances go up as you progress through a program. For multiple reasons.. you're more established, but also they are more likely to fund people for shorter periods of time (ie, 1 or 2 years rather than 3 or 4 hahaha..) Anyways.. I have my two pages of my proposal, and then five pages of references. In the reference section I sorted it into two sections based upon the sources I cited in the proposal.. and those I did not cite but are including as my bibliography (I hope that is clear, I'm on little sleep and a lot of coffee). It's unfortunate that the margins issue reduces the number of lines we have. This year I cut out a lot of fluff from my proposal.. I thought it was important to have white space between the paragraphs (... don't ask my why, I have no idea lol). I think it's easier to read I guess. It was difficult, but I guess I'm getting better at being concise. Again, good luck. =)
  3. Good luck everyone. =)

All text must be within 1.87cm margins, so that includes headers and footers and page numbers, etc. In my five page list of citations, I start with the sources I cited in my research proposal and then go on to list the sources I plan to use for my dissertation. I'm pretty sure they don't want any end notes. I hope that makes sense.. lol.

Blehg, I'm in the process of (re)writing another SSHRC application. I just popped in to check if there was a new thread going. =) I'm not sure if I posted this before.. but my old mentor told me that she had a student hear back from SSHRC in January about receiving funding (bumped up from a recommended but not funded sort of situation). So I'm not sure exactly what the time line is, but yes.. I'm sorry, it can be that late.. I was 12th in line, so I'm not really too optimistic, haha .. I AM optimistic about this year though. Woot! Third time is a charm I hope! I am hoping to submit and wait until at least April this time before I start fretting and trolling through here again. =) Good luck everyone! <3

Ouch I just found out today I'm ranked 12th out of 28 people on the wait list, I wonder if I should be framing my research differently. This subgroup I'm in seems ridiculously competitive... Or maybe a lot of people scored around 18-19/30 and didn't end up with funding either, I dunno. I'm going to have to speak with some profs or something who know about this whole crazy scheme! Oh well, time to start studying for comps and preparing for social science congress! Yay Montreal! Don't be too bummed everyone, I took it pretty hard too.. but you just have to let it roll off your shoulders. Unfortunately, rejection is a part of our job, and it doesn't mean you're a poor student or researcher. <3

I dunno, I would actually advise against this. Early in our careers I think we have to avoid "fluffling" out our CVs to be honest. I would suggest it just go in your awards/fellowships section. That's my view anyhow. I also say this because as a part of my job I spend a lot of time looking at CVs of young and established scholars alike, and I don't see them doing that.
  9. I'm a pretty new student at the U of A. I moved out here in September, and I find Edmonton to be a nice city honestly. I was sort of bummed about moving to Alberta because I'm quite radical (not left or right wing.. just sort of off that spectrum entirely!). I was very pleased to find Edmonton to be a relatively progressive place. I live near the century park station one stop south of southgate mall. It's fantastic. The station just opened a few weeks ago and it has cut my commute in half (15 minutes!). Cost of living is pretty reasonable, I pay 850$ a month for a one bedroom place, I don't actually know the square feet of this place but it's very comfortable and we have a balcony. I think living near the LRT is the best option. I like Whyte but I imagine apartments in that area are in high demand and the prices might reflect that. One nice thing about my rental company is that they allow kitties They also allow dogs, but I dunno.. that made our lives a lot easier. We no longer have to hide our cat, haha. Good luck!

Received my letter in the mail this afternoon, I am living in Edmonton. 1. Recommended but not funded.. scored 18.20/30 2. Edmonton 3. Received May 10th, dated May 3rd 4. I'm in Sociology, all it says is multidisciplinary selection committee (I study social services and community groups in relation to newcomer employment outcomes) 5. Through my university 6. I'm just finishing my 1st year 7. N/A 8. This is my second time applying, I didn't make it to the national competition last year. I didn't apply to SSHRC for my MA. I have a 4.0 GPA, one 2nd-authored book chapter, 5-ish conference presentations, two minor awards during my MA, and three awards were on my application for my PhD. I won't lie, I'm actually pretty depressed about this. The truth of the matter is that rejection is part of our job, and I realize and accept that.. but it still stings, lol. I've already added a number of lines to my CV for next years application, so I'm confident and optimistic about that. I wish I could've worked on a couple solo pubs this year, but coursework is way too demanding! I think after a couple of weeks I'm going to start my application for next year, I really want to get this right this time. So hopefully I can figure that out. Best of luck to everyone I really hope you MA folks find out soon, waiting is tough.. don't work yourselves up too much darlings, you're all fabulous.

Aiiya, this is making me crazy! I received a notice of intersession RA funding yesterday so I think I was unsuccessful, but I can't get ahold of anyone in my department (probably end of term chaos). Oh man, this is brutal.. hahah... Edit: Yes, I received my confirmation that I was unsuccessful.. I'm more than a little disappointed. Oh wells, next year! Congratulations to those who have been successful

The waiting is making me insane. I'm the primary income in my partnership, and I have some savings but until we all hear back.. the status of my funding is in flux. Talked with my department today, they're still waiting. They are surprised about how long it's taking! Eeeep... good luck everyone. =/ Oh, also: In Social Sciences, the pressure to publish is quite substantial. My goal is at least one publication a year. Hopefully, now that I've completed my first year of coursework, I'll be able to get two or three articles out of the papers I wrote. this might be somewhat ambitious though. So yeah, one publication.. a couple conferences. It varies considerably by discipline I think. It always helps to have a few extra lines on your CV =)

Thanks, you're very correct. I was so pleased to make it to the second round, but as the months pass by I am very aware of my increasing anxiety :/ I want the award for both reasons honestly. The prestige really helps to build your CV, and the financial benefit ensures you have more time to focus upon your own work.. which translates into a more developed CV. I think it also helps your confidence. I know graduate school has done a number on my confidence over the years, it's a bit of a roller coaster eh? - Good grade = Yay I'm awesome. Bad grade = I am the worst student ever. Accepted paper = I am the best researcher everrrr! Rejection letters = why am I here, I'm not good enough. - Hahaha, I'm sure you all get my point. So I think the recognition builds confidence in important ways. I guess on the financial level, I'm currently the main income in my home as my partner is also a student (He supported me during the end of my BA, so we've switched roles now that I have more earning power). So that can be a little stressful. If I don't get it, I won't be super surprised.. as I said my award record is much shorter than most PhD students, and my research contributions are limited as well. So I'm crossing my fingers, but I would understand why I wouldn't be selected. There is always next year, hopefully I can get a few of my working papers out for review or something. Someone brought up the point about the disciplinary variation. I think this is really important honestly. Social sciences and the humanities are quite different fields. On the other hand, trans-disciplinary collaboration is the theme of the future... so maybe people are more informed about what is a good proposal for psychology versus english versus sociology. (At least I hope!!) The "Matthew effect" is definitely discouraging... Sorry to be so negative, I'm doing PhD coursework and I'm very burnt out. (We all are I'm sure) So again, good luck everyone. (Fingers crossed!)
