  1. This forum although very helpful scared me A LOT!!! So many people stating how important GRE scores are and how without a high score your application would get thrown in the trash. Not true people, not true.
  2. Ok let me start by saying I am not an idiot lol, I promise. I have a great GPA, had awesome references, and a few impressive internships on my resume. However, the GRE murdered me. I got a 700Q and a 380V, yes, don't laugh, and no I'm not an international student, it was just a really bad day. On all my practice tests including powerprep I was scoring in the 600s in Verbal but that day something came over me and I just bombed it. When I saw my score for the first time I could not believe it and then I cried for a week. I thought my life was over, I would never get into a grad school. Well guess what?! Not only did I get into my safe school Florida State University but I also got into American University and NYU! I know that might not be impressive to those of you who are heading to Harvard or Yale but this just goes to show you can get into a good school without perfect GRE scores as long as you have other things going for you. I hope my story helps some of you out there *I also want to add I'm not someone who has had a ton of work experience, I'm only 20, straight out of undergrad*
  3. Ok so I applied to Florida State University (where I did my undergrad) and American University. I got into FSU no problem and after being denied at AU they contacted me and decided they were going to accept me after all. The thing is they told me yesterday. So I would have to move my whole life from Florida to DC like NOW!!! So here's my thing. Do I stay in Florida and go to FSU where I have a full time job that pays for all my bills and would only have to take out about $5k (5 semesters) in loans every semester or do I take a chance and go to a better institution but live off Cup-a-Noodles and take out about $15k(4 semsters) a semester do pay for everything until I find a job. Please help!
  4. Hi everyone, I applied to American University and they have rolling admission. I was wondering if anyone new how long that usually takes for graduate applications. I remember it taking about 4 weeks for undergrad. Thanks!
  5. Some people receive test fee reduction vouchers, instead of paying $160 they only pay $75. They are suppose to bring the voucher with them the day of the test. Hope this helps
  6. I did, people look at different subsections and I'm trying to get as many replys as possible....Sorry if that bothers you
  7. Hello everyone, I'm finishing up my applications for Spring 2011 admission. I'm applying to a few "safe schools" but also to very competitive programs (Public Administration/National Security are the program I'm applying for). I wanted to know what some of you thought about my chances of getting accepted into a top school. I'm a 20 year old senior graduating in December (I graduated with an Associates Degree in High School so I'm a little ahead) with a Criminology and Spanish Bachelors of Arts. I was a police cadet for four years, an intern at the Mayor's Office for 3 years, and I'm currently an intern for the Secret Service. I have great letters of recommendation and a 3.3 GPA. My Biggest problem is my GRE score, it's a 1030, I'm not very proud of it s I do plan on taking it again but I'm just not very good at these tests. I'm also Hispanic and I've heard that helps sometimes. I was the first person in my family to attend college and have tons of hours of community service, and I'm on a full scholarship at the moment. I'm involved in various organizations, and participate in the Student Government Association. I'm also Homecoming Chair this year which is definitely a big deal at my university. So that's me Let me know what you guys think...Does anyone think my GRE scores will effect me too much? Do I have a chance at schools like Georgetown, American, GWU, or NYU? Thanks!
  8. Hello everyone, I've been filling out my grad school applications and every single one asks if I'm Hispanic. There's a statement on the application that claims it's required my law to ask the question but I was wondering why. I'm just curious. I am in fact Hispanic and have no problem answering the question and I'm not offended at all, like I said, I'm just curious. Does it effect my application in any way? Thanks in advance!
  9. Oh sorry about that =/ the Departments would be Security Studies for Georgetown and GWU and Justice, Law, and Society for American
  10. Hello, I was just wondering if anyone who has been accepted or knows someone who has been accepted to Georgetown, GWU, or American can give me an idea of the GRE scores they are looking for. Thanks in advance!
  11. Hello Everyone, I just took Peterson's "Master the GRE" CD/Online Practice Test. I got an 1120 (600Q 520V). Has anyone else taken this practice test? How accurate is it? I'm worried, my exam is July 1st and I need at least a 1290. Thank you all in advance!
  12. I used "Word Smart for the GRE"...it's small but great! It has really helped me a lot!
  13. thanks everyone! Your responses were great! By the way, the Kaplan test I took was not online, I took it at the Kaplan Center and it was on paper.
  14. I took Kaplan's Practice GRE today and got a very low combined score of 950 (V: 430 Q: 520) I'm very surprised by this score because I got a significantly high score on my SATs. I thought maybe Kaplan puts much harder questions on their practice tests so you pay for their tutoring courses. But whatever! I want to attend Georgetown's School of Foreign Service (security studies). I will also be applying to GWU, American and FSU. What are my chances? My GPA is a 3.3, I have interned at the police station for 4 years, the mayor's office for 3 years and I'm currently an intern at the secret service. I have great letters of recommendation and I think I can pull off a pretty good SOP. Has anyone else taken one of these pracice tests and done better on their actual GRE test? Thank you all in advance!!!
  15. I'm taking my GRE in a few weeks and was wondering if anyone has been accepted to any of these schools, and how high there GRE scores were so I can get an idea of how well I have to do. My programs of interest are Security Studies and Public Policy so if you got accepted to one of these schools I definitely want to hear from you! Thanks in advance to everyone!
