  1. I also heard from the administrative director of one of the programs I am applying to that they have a grace period on LORs (also transcripts and GRE scores for classes/exams taken before the deadline but not reported until after), but that she wanted to know from applicants if any parts of their application were likely to be coming in late. So I'd say yes, do call - chances are it will be no big deal and you'll spare yourself the agony knowing you have some leeway.
  2. I can't tell you if you are crazy, except that if you are, you are not alone! I am also applying for a PhD (in public policy) with a 3 year old and another baby due in May (would be 3 months when school starts in the fall). I have a very supportive spouse and family in the area, awesome full-time child care and 2 years before my oldest starts kindergarten, so I figure this would be the best time to commit myself to 2 years of 80-hour weeks in classes before the dissertation process begins. Good luck!
  3. This thread is old, but I thought it worth mentioning that HKS no longer accepts GMAT as an alternative to the GRE - it came up in an info session I attended earlier this fall, and the director of the program said they were getting so few applicants with GMAT scores that it was hard to adequately compare them.
  4. I'm debating the same thing, though my field in housing policy which it seems everyone is an expert in these days! I can't make it too general, or else I sound like half the talking heads on CNN. But the alternative is to hammer on some detail, which mostly means some administrative element that is not very interesting. If it helps, this is a link to a sample policy memo from the HKS website - not meant for the admissions process but rather for students to demonstrate how to include citations in a brief policy statement, but it might help give some flavor for the level of specification and formality they are looking for. http://www.hks.harvard.edu/var/ezp_site ... y-memo.pdf. Good luck.
