  1. I got a Fulbright to Croatia!! I am SOOO excited. For the spreadsheet: Croatia, Full, email on 4/18/12, PhD student with 1 dependent Side note - does anyone know how much the grant is actually for? Good luck to everyone who is still waiting. This was my second round of grants - sometimes it takes more than one.
  2. I am putting in for a full grant to Croatia. I hadn't realized they cut the number of grants down from 5 to 3 this year. I am getting a little stressed about the whole thing.
  3. So, as some of you probably know, the 2011 round of Fulbright Hays awards was cancelled this year due to budget cuts. Has anyone heard anything about the IIE (or the Hays) funding status for this coming year?
  4. ::jaw drop:: I had to read that three times to make sure it said what I thought it said. This sucks so hard.
  5. I am sorry, I just need a second to vent: I am so frustrated. I am writing up a new proposal to use in my next round of funding applications, and I think it is much better than the last one. But there is a little piece of me that keeps saying "what if you get the Fulbright Hays, this will all be wasted work." The rest of me answers "shut up, I am not getting it, please stop wasting time and effort making me hope for it." Its not a big deal, just another little something to keep me from getting motivated about repeating this stressful cycle all over again. And yes, I am talking to myself - this is what applying for dissertation funding has done to me.
  6. So, I didn't get my first round of funding for my dissertation research. Its OK, I know what I did wrong now, its a learning process..... Anyway, my department is funding me for one more semester (Fall 2011) while I try again. Problem is, the only grant I know of that I might possibly get in time to go into the field in the Spring of 2012 is the NSF DIGG. Everything else reports back between March and May/June. Does anyone have any suggestions for dissertation funding (research funding, not writing funding) I could apply for that has a Summer/Early Fall Deadline, or that I might hear back from by January? I know you need some specs to really help me, so here they are: Anthropology Ph.D. student; I will be ABD by the middle of this summer. My research is related to gender, public health, and the former Yugoslavia. Please let me know if you have any ideas, I would really, really appreciate it.
  7. Not to suggest that any of us might possibly not get funded this round but, has anyone heard anything about the long term funding? Are these cuts for this year, or are they supposed to be the new funding level (until it gets changed again, anyway)?
  8. Every time I apply for something that I care about (grants, fellowships, programs, whatever) I am always struck by how the word "soon" can mean such a different thing to an applier than to an appliee. I am trying so hard not to be too anxious about a grant that I am almost certainly not going to get this round. But I guess hope springs eternal.
  9. I will say this to anyone who is still waiting - I got wait listed at my first choice school. Not only did I get wait listed, but they didn't even tell me. I had written them off completely, thinking they had long since discarded my file. Then my now adviser called me in April and said, ok, you were my second choice, the first guy said no. Full funding for four years, here is why you should pick us, please tell us now-ish. The moral of this story? Sometime good things take their own sweet time happening. Don't give up hope until everyone has said no.
  10. I got a very similar email from our coordinator today: I am writing to update you on the status of your application for the Fulbright Hays Doctoral Dissertation Research Abroad (DDRA) program. We hope to have a final announcement regarding the competition soon. However, Department of Education is strongly suggesting that if you have received offers from other funding agencies that you accept the offer. I agree with this suggestion. We do not want you to miss an opportunity while waiting for the final word on the DDRA competition. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me. BTW, I think the first line is kind of cruel given that the status update is really "no news yet." So, do we think that soon actually means soon, or is that just the standard line?
  11. Huh...well I guess that is something. Looks like she put up another one where she mostly said she was having a bad day. http://spinnergal.blogspot.com/2011/04/freemind-review.html *BTW, the name thing is a coincidence - this is not me.
  12. I don't know if anyone else on here is waiting besides the two of us, but just in case: everyone can expect to hear back in the next week or so. If you hear anything (positive or negative), please post it here so that the rest of us know that decisions are coming out.
  13. This is good to know, but it is also disappointing. I had hoped that maybe their budget for this round was already set and not involved in the current trouble. Oh well, it is what it is.
  14. We just pay a flat fee per semester as well for every semester after we obtain ABD status. I think it is between $500 and $600 per semester.
