  1. Hi! I'm a recent admit to their Comp Lit program. The visit was incredible, by the way - I loved everything about it. Now I'm choosing between other schools that are just as good a match intellectually but lack the sheer beauty and quality of life available in SB. Have you made a decision yet? If you don't mind sharing, what other schools are you considering? Deciding is turning out to be the hardest part of this process - which I suppose is a good thing, since I could have had no offers at all. In any case best of luck to you, and perhaps we'll run into each other at SB in the fall.
  2. Hi Brontesaurus! Thanks for the feedback. I think it's going to come down to the campus visits and "feel," since each school for me offers great fit in different ways. And since I suspect you're the same English admit I'm currently messaging with, I'll end there. UC Merced, by the way, just emailed me with an admit notice for their Interdisciplinary Humanities program, which is exciting! Options are always good.
  3. Hi, I've received three admits so far for comparative literature: UC Santa Barbara, UC Davis, and UC Santa Cruz. I'm still waiting on decisions from Yale, Columbia, U of Chicago, CUNY Grad Center, and a few others (UCLA, though I think that's a no based on the results I've seen posted here; UCI; and UCM's interdisciplinary humanities program). All three have offered full funding for at least five years, and two (SB and Davis) will likely be giving me a fellowship. My research areas are Spanish (Golden Age, mysticism, modern Latin and Central American poetics) and Russian (early Soviet poetics, Bakhtin studies, Dostoevsky, mid- to late 20th century Russian novel). What do fellow literature folks think about these three departments? Any thoughts about how to choose, apart from the obvious (best fit, funding, etc.)? I'm just checking in to see if anyone has had any particularly positive or negative experiences with these schools, has any useful information, or could offer some sage advice. I'd welcome thoughts from current applicants also accepted to these departments. Thanks comparatistas!
  4. Congratulations! Would you mind sharing your interests and your admissions profile (GPA, GRE scores, background, languages, etc.)? For those of us still waiting and thinking about re-applying next year, it would help us get an idea of the kind of person they are lookng to admit. Thanks and congratulations, again!
  5. Hey there! I am waiting to hear from Berkeley's Comp Lit program. I came across your posting and figured I check and see if you accepted their offer, and if so, what you think of the department now. Also, when did you get your acceptance letter (end of January, early Feb, etc.)?
  6. You should! I spent a year in Riga and two years in a smaller coastal city - Latvia is an amazing place, even better if you can learn the language since they have some fascinating folk poetry traditions.
  7. This year I only applied to Berkeley, Stanford, and UC Irvine. Next year (I'm already preparing for round 2, which is fine since I have a good job and a nice career in community mental health) I'm broadening the field and applying to Yale (comp lit), Stanford (Spanish), Berkeley (comp lit), UCLA (comp lit), and a few others. And you, Alyanumbers?
  8. Ha ha thanks for that. My written stuff should be fine, if not pretty strong, except for the sample (which I persist in thinking that I screwed up by submmitting it in excerpts). Thanks for making me laugh and for relieving me of some of my anxiety.
  9. Good points, grifter. I realize I need to lessen my unhealthy obsession with my Berkeley application - but that (as you know) is much easier said than done. Thanks for the good wishes and the positive feedback - every little bit of additional analysis helps soothe my already extensive obsessive tendencies. Best wishes for you and your own application process.
  10. Hey there Grad Cafe, I'm sitting here doing my morning freak-out before the mail comes, wondering how long it will take Berkeley to make a decision on my MA/PhD application to Comp Lit. Anyone heard back from them yet? This is my first round of applications and I poured everything into my application for Berkeley. To pass the time while I wait - any opinions on my chances of getting in? Here are my stats: 3.9 GPA in my major (English and World Lit), 3.6 cumulative, graduation with honors from a top-ranking liberal arts college. All of this was 12 years ago - in the interim, I served in the Peace Corps, and then got a Master in Science from Columbia. I have worked as a psychotherapist and clinical social worker for the past 8 years. My langauges are: fluent Spanish, fluent Latvian, intermediate Russian. In my SOP I link my current work to my interests in literature (essentially, storytelling and literature-making as both therapeutic modality and as tools for economic justice and social transformation). I think my SOP is strong, and my personal statement (Berkeley makes you write both) is especially strong. My writing sample is good but not as strong as the others. I'll have good LORs from professors in undergrad, one from Columbia, and one from my work world (another psychotherapist who supervised my clinical work before I became licensed). Main interests were Lat-Am literature, Soviet lit, and folk poetry and songs. So, with my first post on here, do any of you have any opinions and/or advice? I'm expecting to do a second round next year because of my sample (I submitted several excerpts from my thesis instead of just submitting one chapter). Thanks and good luck to everyone!
