  1. Still waiting for Erasmus Mundus Joint Doctorate Program and UNSW. I think I have a very bad chance and it affects also other applicants applied to the same programs. Erasmus Mundus is late due to Eastern Holiday and other university has been making some changes on admission procedure.
  2. Hi, First I applied to two scholarships : International Postgraduate Research Scoharship (IPRS) and Scholarship for International Research Fees (SIRF). Unfortunately, I received the following short email that doesn't indicate explicitly rejection for what and Why? Dear Applicant INTERNATIONAL POSTGRADUATE RESEARCH SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION ROUND 2 2012 Careful consideration has been given to your application for a postgraduate research scholarship tenable at the University. I regret to have to inform you that your application for a scholarship has been unsuccessful. The Scholarships Committee has asked me to thank you for your application and wishes you well in your future endeavours. I sent an email to ask the department for which scholarship my application was rejected last friday but they haven't replied yet. According to title of the email I think it is for IPRS but why they haven't mentioned anything about SIRF? Could you share what you think? PS: It is important for me beacuse if I get SIRF that doesn't cover living expenses my prospective supervisor told me he could arrange a generous RA for me. Otherwise, He said he couldn't do much about it. Thanks
  3. Hi, I didn't apply to UC Irvine and my major is not CS. However, I would like to share my experience. Universities usually do not care rejected students so much. Therefore, they usually postpone sending rejection letters/e-mails to those students. First, highly ranked students are informed and then students in waitlist. Having receiving no rejection letter doesn't always indicate that no news is good news. It depends on the university which you apply. On the other hand, there is no difference between applying for a job and a position in a university. That is, universities always want to have a big application pool to both make money and to find the best students. Therefore, if prof. answers your email and encourage you to apply, it doen't mean that you will be definitely admitted. God luck to everyone.
  4. I admit that some of them (especially members of group-8) are really good in academic area. However, How degrees obtained from these universities are recognized in other parts of the world, especially in US/Canada/UK when compared to other renowned universities in these countries. I think it is another issue and really important (not for me and maybe you). However, it is a fact that an ivy leaque student will prefer to study at Columbia Univ instead of univMelb. At this point I assume that all other conditions are same for these two universities. Finally, Congrulations on your admissio to UnivMelb. I know that it is really better that UWA and UNSW. Regards,
  5. Thanks for your replies. I think i will hear decisions from the universities late in April. Although my potential supervisor at one of these universities supporting my application and I'm still keep in touch with him, but she refusing to give me any apriori information about my application's rank among other applications. is this information is too classified for a prof. to learn my chance of gettting admission a few weeks ago?
  6. I see that nobody in this forum applied to study in australia. I understand why (too far from central continents, not having so renowned universities globally, and maybe snakes, spiders..). But I couldn't find any hot topic in another forum like gradcafe. Then please explain me why I've been still waiting since late Jan. In addition, I'm in contact with my potential supervisor (I prepared a conf. paper under his supervision.too) however, he didn't answer my request asking about my status without bounding on him.
  7. Hi all, There is no special topic for universities in Australia. Although the scholarship oppurtunities are rare, the competition is a bit less severe except Melburne, ANU and Sydney when compared to US. Canada, I think that there are people who applied/think to apply for the universities in Australia. you can share your comments/results/experience in this topic. I applied to universities in Australia (UWA and UNSW) but still waiting for decisons for these two universities.
  8. I got some info about both of these universities. They both have pros and cons. I am not an ivy league student and also only prof.'s in these universities supported my application. If I don't get full scholarship (I know it is very rare in australia) it is impossible for me to move and study in this continent. However, I crossed my fingers for an offer including full scholarship from UWA.

First thanks for your valuable information. As I know, in Australia a PhD candidate must first find a suitable supervisor who will guide his/her postgraduate research. However, I could find only two academic staff willing to supervise me. In addition, I think that it is too late to apply to scholarships for the next semester commencing in Jun 2012. Therefore, I have no other chance (except Queen Marry London) if one of these universities offer a place for me. I think that being a part of the army is impossible for people not citizen of that country. In this case, could you tell me what do you explicitly mean by saying that I will be minority? Finally, according to some realiable instutitions (The Times, QS , etc) UWA is at least as good as UNSW and better than USyd and Adelaide in engineering and also ADFA in Canberra is a campus of UNSW. Could you rank ADFA by comparing it with any university in Canada or US?
  10. Hi, I didn't find enough information about the universities in Australia. This year I applied to two australian universities (University of Western Australia and UNSW@ADFA). For UWA you can find some information (ranking and its education quality in web). However, I didn't find anything about ADFA campus of UNSW. In addition, I need information about the cities where these universities was founded (especially which one is more suitable for an overseas graduate student regarding living expenditures, accommodation, public transportation, etc). Thanks for your help.

  13. To the person from Western Australia, I am a PHD student from eastern Europe and applied to the PHD program at UWA ECE Dept. Could you tell me What your opinion is about UWA (at PHD level)? Furthermore, If you know UNSW@ADFA, Which one is better? Finally, which one is better for an overseas student to study in Canberra or Perth? Thanks for your help.
