  1. My CO contacted DOE on Friday. DOE confirmed that some decisions have gone out, but DOE noted "that all of the final decisions of the Fulbright-Hays Grant have not been made yet." I guess we'll expect to know by the end of the month.
  2. I go to a school that is in the top 5 of all those stupid rankings, and none of my friends have heard anything. Keep your fingers crossed!
  3. Ah, I got it. Thanks for keeping up with the replies. Have a restful weekend, I hope that you get at least some feedback, I've struck out of *many* grants and have always appreciated the feedback, usually its spot on. Occasionally, it isn't. I'm losing hope though, as usually the awards are staggered by institution, and schools with zero awards hear last. Thus I'm at least looking forward to some commentary.
  4. My friend got the grant some 4 years ago, and things might have changed since then. I only know that she had gotten full points in her year, I just wrote 100 although yes this year its out of 110. I see that the state department preferences are 2 for language, 3 for region, and 5 for field. Did you lose 2 for language and 3 for field? I think that you're absolutely correct, you're probably not going to get a fulbright hays if you don't use a foreign language, have training in it, or propose advanced training prior to departure. Im sorry I can't be of much help about getting reviews because we *still* haven't received word at my school, my coordinator emailed back at the end of the day Friday. If you wouldn't mind sharing the feedback you get or a summary of what kinds of suggestions/critiques were given, I would appreciate it!
  5. 13 points for that?!?! Yikes. A friend of mine actually got a full 100 points a few years back. Yeah, I couldn't believe it either. Im an anthropologist and I think that the FH is slightly skewed in our favor. We usually have spent some time in the places that we're studying prior to applying, which means letters of affiliation, preliminary field work, localized understandings of whats going on, and usually both academic and real-world experience with the languages that we work in. I go to a fairly large research university and our advisor hasn't given out the results yet. Sigh
  6. On Aug 3, 2015, at 9:19 PM Funding Decision <fundingdecision@wennergren.org> wrote to my advisor that I got it. Curiously I dont have any email from WG at all (it also went into my spam last time) I hope you get it!
  7. Hi B, and anyone else on a waitlist: I know how positively nervewracking this is, but do *not* give up. Especially you B, should email your POI and tell them directly "If you give me an offer I WILL take it*. This is important for them to know. I know several friends occupying 2-3 spots right now. A girl I'm meeting today is sitting on offers from Berkeley, Stanford, and Duke and she's trying to decide in the next couple of days to free up other spots. You can imagine that if there is someone accepted to Stanford but top waitlisted at Duke and this girl chooses Berkeley and that "someone" takes the spot at Duke, thats 2 new spots at Stanford that open up. April 15th is a long ways away, and I wish you the best of luck.
  8. Gradschool stressed, I know Im like a month late, but please take anthrogeeks posts with a grain of salt because he's not socialcultural. You NEED to say why things interest you and how. What if you changed from an undergrad history major who studied latin america to an anthropology applicant interested in chinese migration to australia? There is not way to "show" your interest, you need to craft a statement that demonstrates that youve thought concisely about a problem that is interesting to the discipline at the moment, that can speak to the current language of the discipline, that the depts that you want to go to has the resources to see the project through. Your undergrad background is important insofar as it demonstrates your trajectory as a scholar, as well as anything you did (i.e. research training) that provides you the necessary background to do what you need to do. RE getting a job. I don't know what kind of magical unicornland anthrogeek lives in, but getting a job is way more than your advisor and his/her network (again we might be talking past each other because of social cultural). All of the 'top' anthropologists are in 'top' departments. Find me a few heavily cited authors that are in state schools that aren't like a UC, UVA, or Michigan and we can talk. The job prospects of people not coming from elite schools was most violently apparent at the American Anthropological Association meetings in SF last week. Out of curiosity: "I know for a fact my dissertation would be impossible if I went anywhere else" Does that mean no other department has the resources for it? Either your dissertation will be a groundbreaking brilliant contribution, or esoteric AF. ps excuse grammar spelling
  9. Thanks so much for the update, I've been too chicken to call. That said, this seems horribly irresponsible of them. I think such a late notification date could seriously compromise the number/quality of students in their incoming cohort.
  10. Go to other departments visitation days/weekends. I went to an MA program and was admitted to my BA school which was my "dream school" for PhD since Freshman year...up until about a month ago. I woke up to some realities that I would face. Now likely going to a department thats about an hour away and I can take advantage of a lot of what I really liked about my undergrad school without the negatives.
  11. Congrats on all fronts, but that teaching commitment sounds effing terrible (I assume they dont make you teach in year 4/fieldwork year?)
  12. Seconded. I think you and I actually did this last monday.
  13. If a private top ten is giving you less than 20k you should push for more...
  14. This is mostly false. PM me if you got into mapss and want to talk about it.
  15. Hello friends. My bff is a Stanford maybe-er in anthropology. She went to interview weekend, but was not contacted as an admit or a waitlist as other people have for anthropology. There seems to be waitlist/funding issues that are being decided by the social science/humanities division. Im sure it stings not to be part of the "golden children" who got the first admits, but don't fret, that few billion dollars the school raised is bound to trickle down to lowly graduate students in the social sciences.
