  1. You can do it, dazedandbemused! Pierce gets the first thank-you in my acknowledgements
  2. I'd be happy to participate in a forum on the job market, though I think it would probably be more useful to split at least into STEM , social sciences, and humanities like suggested above. Thanks again, all! I'm happily Dr. Lyonessrampant now
  3. I went on it this year. It's brutal, but we all know that. Hoping next year will be better with degree in hand, but even if I end up going alt-ac or non-ac, I've had a great experience during my Ph.D. I learned a new language, spent about a year in Italy and England, got funded to do research I love and am passionate about, and had amazing health insurance, so for me, I have zero regrets even if I don't get a TT-job.
  4. Thank you all so much! What a pleasant surprise it is to see this today. Old Bill, I happily pass the torch to you, as your support and encouragement of everyone over the last couple of years is evidence that you'll continue to contribute to this community. Best wishes to all.
  5. My husband and I bought a home. Like Tybalt says, there can be down sides (we've replaced the furnace, hot water heater, and will be doing a new roof soon), but we've saved a lot of money overall compared to renting.
  6. Hugs to you! I'm so sorry and hope you can find another way to do your project.
  7. Congratulations! I'm so happy for you!
  8. Also an alternate for the second time in a row, and I wish it would have been a rejection as well based on my waiting experience last year and the fact that I'm also applying for jobs and postdocs and things right now. I think for me, if I do get converted, I won't feel badly about it because the factors that go into the difference between Principal and Alternate are beyond your control. It doesn't mean that the Principals projects are objectively better or whatever. It means that they wanted more people working on X and you're working on Y or something like that. If you do get converted, be proud of yourself!
  9. Happy to share friends Best wishes to all on negotiations and campus visits!
  10. Thanks! After last year, I'm not feeling very optimistic, but I appreciate the well wishes!
  11. Just got my Italy notification as well. Also an alternate. Again. For the second year in a row. Seriously, Italy, are you just stringing me along here? Ugh. Anyway, congratulations to everyone who got good news today and hoping everyone gets answers soon!
  12. That's adorable! Hi to your mom
  13. Yay! Congrats to everyone they are finalists today, and condolences to any getting bad news.
  14. Hello fellow Italy semi-finalists! I applied for the general research grant to work at University of Bologna. Hope we all get good news soon!
  15. Japan's was also early (March 4) and earlier than in previous years. Either way, I hope that notifications start coming soon.
  16. Italy doesn't. I think a lot of the European countries don't have it (though I'm not an expert on that fact).
  17. It looks like we're definitely delayed, or early notified people aren't here or updating. Last year I remember that there were notifications on March 2 for Iceland. Thanks, Trump! lol
  18. Follow the money. If Fordham is giving you a lot more, go there, but if you'd go deeply in debt even at Fordham, I'd recommend declining and reapplying with a focus on more fully funded MA programs. Search these forums on NYU's MA program and you'll find that it, like UChicago's MAPH, has a very mixed reputation. Cash cow programs can work for some people, but especially if you're not independently wealthy or something, the debt for a humanities degree is not a good idea.
  19. It's crazy! I hope your job marketing is going better than mine PM me if you ever want to talk about it. And thanks Wyatt's Terps! At least I've got "tenure" somewhere. Haha!
  20. Last year, I got an email about my alternate status for Italy research award March 11th. All Italy people were notified that day. If things go similarly this year, I'd expect people to start hearing back in the next couple weeks, but if all notifications are delayed until April, that would be very . . . unfortunate.
  21. Definitely A. Placement (and this statement comes from someone on the market this year for the first time) is EXTREMELY important. Best of luck to you!
  22. Congratulations! I don't think there's anything wrong with waiting to see what you hear. I was an Alternate for a research grant to Italy last year, and I can tell you that I would have loved for one of the people who got the grant to turn it down for a better/different opportunity! Also, if you receive it and do decline it, you definitely want to put that on your CV. If you stay in academia, having an international fellowship like the Fulbright is really important for the job market (I'm on that now).
