  1. I'm going to University of London, Birkbeck for my philosophy MA! It's so exciting. Do you guys know anything about getting your Visa or how long it takes? There is so much planning involved, I don't know where to begin.
  2. I've accepted an offer at University of Reading in the Fall and I would like any information on what the town is like (atmosphere, things to do, etc.). If you have lived there or around the area, any information would be helpful!
  3. Nope. I've accepted an offer in the UK at University of Reading. You will love FSU, though! If you have any questions, I will try to help you out.
  4. As a prospective philosophy grad I feel like Aristotle and Socrates never had it this hard. I mean c'mon! Competition can be a good thing, but I still feel like trying to get accepted into a program is a lot of hoop-jumping. Especially since none of my offers are funded! Can't I just bake my future professors some meatloaves as tuition and call it a day?
  5. Cool! I was a physics major at FSU for a few years. FSU has a really great department. Do you know who you will be working with yet?
  6. Favorite. One of mine was: Please know that we very much appreciate the time and effort you put into the materials you submitted, as well as the opportunity you gave us to consider your application. Exactly! I gave you an opportunity. Hahah.
  7. I'm finishing up undergrad at FSU and have lived in Tallahassee for four years. The school sends crime bulletin e-mails to the students informing them of recent crimes around campus (usually involving theft or attempted theft). I have always felt safe around campus, though. A general rule of thumb that no one seems to have problems following is to avoid Frenchtown (Tallahassee ghetto). As regards finding a place to live, it is sage advice to check the crime history of the complex or neighborhood you intend to live in. Some complexes have a better record than others. I would not recommend living on campus as a grad student. I'm not even sure if the dorms allow grad students or if it is only for undergrads. There are plenty of roommate matching services in town, so you can find a roommate (if you want one) that matches your lifestyle. If I stay at FSU for grad school I will definitely be moving further from campus. Also, the buses at FSU are great! As long as you live on an FSU-bus route (I'm not sure about the city-bus system) you should be fine.
  8. I'm still waiting to hear back from a few schools, but seriously considering accepting my offer from Kansas. Anyone know anything about Lawrence or Kansas City? I've always lived in busy cities on the east coast, so I'm a bit skeptical of the mid-west lifestyle. But, still excited for a change of scenery!
  9. I know there is grad student housing in Alumni Village, but it seems to be "dorm-style" apartments. The plus side of that is that its near campus and cheap! Otherwise, anywhere in the Downtown area (a bit more expensive), off Apalachee parkway, and Monroe street near the Governor's Square Mall or Lake Ella are safe bets for staying relatively near campus and out of the party-style quarters.
  10. having a bit of makers mark right now because i'm late on the recieving end of a notification from the school i am currently attending. i'm doing full research with two seminal faculty members and have three letters or rec. from the department & still haven't heard back with an admissions decision. sob indeed. if you don't admit your own students i fear you've done something wrong in the training. or perhaps it's me. sigh.
  11. I'm finishing my undergrad at FSU and still waiting on an admission decision for their Philosophy MA. As regards where to live off campus--stay away from most of the nearby apartment complexes if you are looking to avoid living with undergraduates. Obviously, the further from campus you go, the cheaper the rent. I could practically leap to campus & I pay less than $500/mo. Also, be sure to check about crime-rates in whichever area you plan on living-- some are notorious for theft, while others are almost free of all crime. I'm not sure how helpful this post is, but if you have any other questions about Tallahassee, let me know!
