  1. Solid advice. IMHO the best way to get into a program (or job, for that matter) is to go out and show the world what you're capable of. Get published. Get recommendations. Get job experience. Whatever you're lacking in, just show them next year that you're a stronger candidate. Once you are into a M.A. program you have a lot more opportunities than outside of a program: regional conferences, collaborative opportunities, and ample opportunities for feedback.
  2. Thanks ppl, I feel much better. Nobody, including my father who has taught at the university level for 25+ years, has been able to tell me what's going on because policies differ across universities. I really don't mind if I don't get in, because with the research & projects I'm working on now I'll be a slam dunk next year
  3. Yeah, you have to wait for the Ph.D for that privilege
  4. Personally, I'd go with the money from a solid mid-range school than a strapped existence at an A-list school. Think about if you were financially strapped, what a negative impact this could have on your schoolwork and research. Also remember you can go into a Ph.D. program from an undergrad program, so if you apply to a Ph.D. program with an M.A. that's even more of an advantage. A professor once told me when I asked about schools, "good people come from everywhere." Yes I think there's a bias towards ivy league & high level institutions, but you can prove your worth coming from anywhere, as long as you have the evidence to show for yourself.
  5. At least I could get a witness here! I don't know if not hearing back means I have a better or worse chance of getting in. But it is completely infuriating.
  6. What is the last date to hear back from schools? Am I right in assuming final decisions will be made in a week?
  7. I'll flip the problem around on your... grad school will always be there! What might not always be there is your youth If possible, do work that will be of interest to your target school when you apply next year. Nothing will impress them more if you do work on your own that shows them what an asset to the school you would be.
  8. Still waiting on one response.... it's really affecting my daily life at this point.
  9. Last fall I applied to a mass communication Ph.D program at a high-ranking CA school. As of today, 4/13, I still haven't received a response. Given the late date, I called this week and asked about my acceptance status. They have my file, but no decision has been made yet, and no more information is available. So, the "official response" is: no response! I received responses weeks ago from the other two programs I applied to. From what I understand, it is very unusual for the process to be delayed this long. What does it mean? Is there such a thing as an unofficial wait list? Or perhaps all responses for this school & program are delayed?
