  1. For those of you interested in rankings, here are the latest ones. Just 3 US universities in the top 10. http://www.topuniversities.com/university-rankings/university-subject-rankings/2013/education-and-training 1 Harvard University United States 2 University of Cambridge United Kingdom 3 The University of Melbourne Australia 4 Stanford University United States 5 University of Oxford United Kingdom 6 Monash University Australia 7 Institute of Education, University of London United Kingdom 8 The University of Sydney Australia 9 University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) United States 10 The University of Queensland Australia
  2. Don't forget to look at the Institute of Education in London, they may have something that fits your needs. They are just as good as Oxford.
  3. Apologies for the delay STMp. It's been a hectic week. I don't know anything about the School of Philosophy unfortunately. The campus itself is ok, perhaps a bit drab and the Arts building (where you will be based) is pretty dreary. However, there are good things too; there is plenty of green space for relaxing and for sports. The university is located in a nice area of Dublin; leafy suburbs and expensive rents! I can't really answer your questions about research facilities, etc. You should go to www.boards.ie and go to the UCD forum there. You will be able to get answers to all your questions there from current students. Link: http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/forumdisplay.php?f=470
  4. The school of Social Policy seems to have a good reputation (I was actually in contact with a Professor there recently, but it was to do with social policy rather than social work). Have you tried to contact a member of the faculty there? I'm no expert, but I would say that the GPA is a minimum cut-off, and that your work experience will really help your application. You shouldn't worry; international students also bring in extra revenue and prestige for universities, so you may even have a slight advantage over similarly qualified EU students.
  5. I'm from Ireland and a graduate of Trinity College. What program are you applying for? Maybe I know someone there, or can help in other ways. You can PM me if you prefer. Best of luck with whatever you decide.
  6. Partly because of funding. But even then, it's still a secondary concern. There's some personal stuff that makes length an important factor. I would like to go the faculty route, but I'm also open to other areas of work (policy roles, research outside of university settings, etc). The long term plan is definitely to work back in Europe; I don't see myself making a permanent move to the US. Thanks for your reply, it has been very helpful. Thanks to you too lilgreycells! I should have guessed that there is no clear answer! Btw, does anyone else know of an institution specifically offering a '4 year' program, like USC does?
  7. Won't that be likely to cause funding issues? If I focus solely on research at the expense of being a TA...
  8. Thank you! I will take a look at their website now; hopefully there are some faculty members that research in my area of interest. I see, from your sig, that you got accepted into USC. Congratulations! Thanks, that definitely helps. I would be entering a PhD program with a Master's degree in education from a UK university. Is it possible that non-US master's degrees would be treated similarly? If that is the case, then it would open up a lot more options for me. I really do not want to do a Master's here in Europe, and then have to spend 6 years doing a PhD.
  9. Does anyone know of any education PhD programs in the US that are around 4 years in duration? The UK looks more attractive to me at the minute, as I could do a PhD in 3-4 years. I know that many US programs can last 6 years, sometimes even more. So I'm looking for education programs that are possible to complete in approx. 4 years. Thanks
  10. I think people in the education field will have heard of it. It's a great school. Definitely the top graduate school of education in Europe and according to this document, it is in the top 6 in the world. http://www.ioe.ac.uk/about/documents/Alumni_Ambassador_toolkit_FAQ.pdf From page 2:
  11. You could also look at Ireland. Trinity College has a Higher Ed. Master's http://www.tcd.ie/Education/courses/masters/ http://www.tcd.ie/Education/assets/documents/Teaching%20and%20Learning%20%28HE%29.pdf Use www.mastersportal.eu to search for more programs in Europe.
  12. Why not look at the Institute of Education in London? It is one of the world's top grad schools in education. It is ranked higher than Cambridge and Oxford in the field of education. These programs may interest you: http://www.ioe.ac.uk...MM9_TLH9IM.html http://www.ioe.ac.uk...MM9_HPE9IM.html http://www.ioe.ac.uk...MM9_LLL9IM.html http://www.ioe.ac.uk...asters/102.html
  13. Try these websites. Use the advanced search settings. http://www.findamasters.com/ http://www.findaphd.com/ http://www.mastersportal.eu/ http://www.phdportal.eu/
  14. I am interested in applying to PhD programs at NYU, Vanderbilt and UCLA, among others. I am interested in education policy, migration and comparative education. However, my undergrad grades are good but not outstanding. I intend to do a Master's program here in Europe before I apply to a PhD program in the states. My question is: will my choice of institution have an impact on my admissions chances when it comes to applying for a PhD in the USA? I will do the Master's at one of the following universities: - University of Bath, UK - Institute of Education, London - University of Exeter, UK - Trinity College Dublin, Ireland Does it matter which one I choose? Thanks
