From another perspective, they'd probably feel good to know they're getting an opportunity to show you what they got before your mind is made up. Anyway, 30% is significant. Anyone get waitlisted to the Lit program at Duke? I know they've interviewed, invited people for a campus visit, and sent out some rejections over the past couple weeks, but I still have no update on my status.

Just wanna shout out my fellow mixed-race, applyin-to-grad-school-in-the-Humanities Latinos! To be honest, most of y'all seem to have had much more successful undergrad careers than I had. I took some time off and just worked in a restaurant after getting my BA, then got funded to do my MA at huge state school. Next, I taught abroad for a while and now I've applied to six schools and been accepted to one PhD program I'm really excited about. In short, I wouldn't worry too much if I were you. Yer stats sound pretty good, and I've got some options having accomplished much less early on in school. Plus, going straight into a grad program isn't the only way to do it.

err i wasn't saying capitalism is postmodernism, but that's an interesting idea. i was saying that this mixed pro-capitalist anti-capitalism seems like a postmodern perspective to me. what's Das Kapital? is that by Tom Clancy? but yes, i do appreciate your thoughts on the job market, preparing for it in diverse ways, and especially the bit about how to use knowledge our field is creating.

sup with all the pro-capitalist anticapitalism in this thread? gdamnit, postmodernism... and as for the job discussion, i would gladly enter a PhD program to take a shot at getting a gig in my academic interest area, if i knew i could fall back on something more realistic and sustainable than what i'm doing right now (adjunct) if need be. i appreciate champagne's comment on going into administration, because i've been thinking about that lately. yeah, it's not really what i want to end up doing, but what i really don't want to end up doing is being an adjunct after getting my PhD, or being 100% jobless. but how can i/we be sure? i guess i've never really researched the job market for more administration-type jobs, though i've applied for a few. in conclusion, fuck capitalism.

Hey y'all, After receiving an acceptance letter, I got invited to attend a recruitment event for a PhD program in Writing & Rhetoric. I'm just wondering if anyone has been to an event like this and can share some things so I know what to expect? As I said, I've already been accepted and given a tentative promise of funding, so it's not like an interview type thing I don't think. It's three days long, so i'm excited but like....the hell we gon do for three days? lol Thanks!

I interviewed for an ESL gig at this university in Cambodia, which is apparently opening its doors for the first time in the fall. I'm wondering if anyone else has seen this or looked into it? I'm just skeptical that it's a scam of some sort, though there I haven't found concrete evidence yet, just a few red flags. I found the job ad on the Chronicle's site, so that makes me feel a little better. Of course, that's not an absolute safety net, though. The interview was over Skype, and three people asked me questions for about 45 minutes. The questions were no less rigorous than any other institution I've interviewed with--also a good sign. The red flags are this: 1) It's a new institution and in a foreign country (duh). 2) I couldn't see anyone in the Skype interview. We tried to correct the problem, but were never able to fix it. 3) No one I've been talking with has used a .edu email address. I looked up one of the names of the interviewers and found him at a reputable institution, and I sent an email to that address saying some shit about if he wanted my letters of rec, just to see if I'm dealing with identity theft or something. 4) The process has been happening really fast. I applied and heard back within 2 weeks. I interviewed and heard back the same day that they want to talk with me further and that I'm a top priority for them. So...am I crazy? or gullible? Or am I just in shock that someone is actually showing interest in hiring me, haha? Any feedback or advice you have to offer would be great.

Ah, yes. I've been stopping by periodically to see what's up, but meh...just grindin lately. My main preparation for the upcoming application cycle has been to try and get a few publications under my belt. So far, so good, but haven't even started working on applications yet. :-/ And Rose, I don't know exactly what you're working on, but based on your comment I think I'd probably just cite at the end of the paragraph (so long as no other citations are interjected along the way).

The editors of the book project I'm involved with are senior faculty members (at an adjacent university) who I met through my thesis director, so it seems/seemed legit. I wonder if it would actually hurt me to have this on my CV, then, while applying to PhD programs?
